This is progress on the removal process of a 4R55E transmission. Vehicle that the transmission is being removed from is a 1996 Ford Explorer V6 4.0 4X4 Eddie Bauer.

You are the only video I have seen that says to remove that panel. I already removed mine to see if I could and was wondering why no one else tried it.

The worst nightmare of this job was actually removing the cross member and the exhaust ! 8 bolts on the cross took 2 days and broke 3. I had to cut my exhaust off because some pipe bending artist did such a Beautiful job under there but, there are no connections anywhere !!! I should be able to weld it back together as I cut it with a cutting disk nice and straight .

By the way...where I ran into real confusion was looking for am Inspection Plate to get at the Flexplate nuts ! There is NO Inspection Plate on this truck ! You MUST get the nuts off the Flexplate through the starter hole !!! Insane. Best Truck I've ever owned for working ! I've been hauling 7 cords of wood 3 times a week with that truck. Used it as a Skidder, a bit of Mud Bogging, years of Winter Hell Driving ! Theres no way I'd have gone through this for any other work vehicle !

Correct, no access plate for the flexplate nuts, you have to manually twist the flywheel and pull each one off one by one, through that tiny starter access hole. Makes it easier if you remove a spark plug, that way you're not dealing with compression.

PRO TIP: That access plate doesn't do much in the way of helping access the top bellhousing bolts, but it is tons easier to access the transmission cooling lines from there so I reccomend you remove it for those.

So what's the tip for accessing the top bolts lmao im going to do those tomorrow and could barely feel the top passenger side .

Remove the front center console and there is an already cut sectioned off piece of carpet. If you pull that up you have much better access to those bolts. Yes its a pain in the butt to remove the console but the bolts are an even bigger pain if you don’t

I don’t know the cost of a used 4r55e but I paid $600 for a full rebuild.

Yes no problem having I put a torque converter and fly with all this automatic with 4.0 four-wheel drive right and the starter now I can't get it started eating

im changinging mine in my 2000 explorer 4x4 it came out with ease but I cant get it lined back up to save my life man this is the hardest trans ive ever did

curtis hutton I can't get mine out to save my life. changing the front seal in my 96 but can't seem to get it loose. I think the bolts in the flywheel to torque converter are holding it in. what is the bolt size or tool I need?

i have the explorer 99 and started with by turning on the overdrive light and ir doesnt turn off, i had to park and turn it off, take our the key and turn it back on, and other problem that i have, it doesnt grab drive, i have to put it on first and quickly put it on drive, do you know why this problems happen? can you help me?

After working on my own Ford Vehicle's, and watching many You-Tube video's of other's working on their's, as well as talking to Ford Repair technician's in the Ford repair shop's, I have come to the following conclusion, and that I would swear that the entire sole purpose in life of all the Ford design engineer's, are to make all of those service and repair people's lives as miserable, and as difficult as possible, whether they are Ford owner's who do their own repairs at home, or the Ford service and repair technician's in a repair shop. because of the way the Ford design engineer's insist upon the hard to get to location of where things are being placed, and how hard it is to get to them in order to to remove, replace, or repair them. - Especially things like the (four), upper Bell Housing bolts.

Yep...driveshafts were a riot ! I think they used 3 different types of bolts at each end I disconnected and then, the CV joint that was supposed to pull out of the transfer case DOES NOT and I wanna Kill a Ford Engineeer for Sport :) (not really)

What is the easiest way to identify what type of transmission is in a Ford Explorer? Where do you look for the numbers?

There are no numbers or VIN plates to identify, there is the year of the vehicle. 90-94 Explorers have the A4LD, 95-96 Explorers have the 4R55E, 97-01 explorers have the 5R55E, then you go to 02 and up as far as I know are all 4R70W/5R55W/5R44E/ect it also depends on 4x4 vs 4x2, auto vs manual, and most importantly V6 vs V8.

1995-96 is 4r55e, you have a 5r55e, which I believe is very close to the same procedure

did u have a problem lining urs up its like the tq wont slide back far enough ive turned the the flywheel everything just lacks a inche to be bolted up

curtis hutton Your tq will have alignment pins that mate to the holes in the bell housing on the transmission. If these are not exactly lined up, the trans will not fully mate o the engine. Don't worry, this was the hardest part I had when installing my tranny. Took a few days for me to get it up...gl!

You most definitely have to. I know it's a pain, your hardest time will be removing the cooler lines unless you use the access plate.

+Jack Hinshaw All access is from the top. Just slides onto the inlet. Helps to have a second personage guiding the tube.

I have a Ford Ranger that has many of the parts the Explorer has. How do I go about finding out what type of automatic transmission is on my truck? Is there somewhere on the transmission where its clearly marked as a 4R55E?

If it is a 95-96 4.0 V6 Ranger, then it likely has the 4R55E. Anything else and it probably has a different transmission.

what is the difference 4r55e and 5r55e cuz of speed 4 SPD and 5 SPD and 4 SPD for auto and 5 SPD for manual ... am I right?

I r&r at a shop and I have 2 questions when you didnt take off the o2 sensor did it break andhow much of a bitch was it to try to pry the exhaust down far enough to have clearance for the bell housing I just take the exhaust off and the front drive shaft but than again I have fat hands

The o2 sensor didn't break and still works fine. The trans was removed and installed with it on as well as the exhaust pipe. It just takes some excessive movement of the transmission to negotiate around the exhaust pipe. As for the driveshaft, that just bolts off.

Cesar Camacho unfortunately, no. 97 and up was the 5R55E, 95-96 was the 4R55E. They’re not the same transmission. You will need a trans from 95-96 only.

+Brad Castillo No, not compatible. Only Ford's that came with the 4R55E was the Aerostar vans and the 1995-1996 Explorers. The trans is poorly designed and very few exist in working condition today.

I work at ford motor comapnty thing guy does not know any thing he is talking about in the video the so called access plate is not a access plate its for a 5 speed manual transmission any more people think they know what theya re doing and have no clue

I just replaced a transmission and utilized the "access plate" when doing so, but I know absolutely nothing. Looking at your grammar and stellar punctuation skills convinces me that you are just an amazing contributing citizen that is ASE certified. No, just kidding, that was all a joke. You are incorrect. There is an access plate.

I didnt remove it, but it would really really REALLY help to access the transmission cooler line nuts. It doesnt really help to acces the upper trans to engine bolts, though.

arose0099 take down the cross member the tranny will drop so you can see the bolts. a 3' extension will let you get to the top bolts
