DIY Kayak Rack for Pickup Truck

A pickup truck kayak rack that disassembles for easy storage. This rack also doubles as a ladder rack or lumber rack. The rack will hold 2 kayaks and allows for the tailgate to remain closed. This allows the truck to be able to tow a trailer or camper behind it.

I’ve never consider myself any kind of builder but watching these videos of well experienced guys make it look so easy. It is of course the result of lots of practice. I’m pretty sure the first time you tried, it didn’t come out quite as good as you wanted but you just kept practicing. I’m going to start when the snow stops - thanks for the encouragement and have a great day! 😇

Thank you for posting this! I'm looking at doing something very similar but for bikes for my kids when we go camping this summer. This is the first one that I've come across while doing research that actually made use of the stake pockets instead of sitting inside the bed. I'm not a welder though, so would something like this be possible using other material (wood most likely)?

It probably won't be strong enough to use the stake pockets if you make it out of wood. I think that is why most of the ones you find made out of wood sit in the bed. I actually used this for the first time this past weekend. It held the two 50 pound kayaks and I still had 100% of the bed available for bikes, firewood and other gear. Thanks for watching!

You might try Unistrut you can order, or find it at Lowe’s & Home Depot all bolts together you can get angles and braces etc.

What size is the tubing you used for this project?

1.5 inch square tube because that's the size that fits in the mounting holes on my truck bed. I'd be sure to measure your truck first and use the right size.

Cool project. But I have one question.... you have a tig welder and you know how to use it. Why didn’t you build it out of aluminum? Most guys I know that have one have no idea how to set it up or even think about using it. 😂

I was going to put some side supports on the rack that's why I didn't 45 them, but then realized it wouldn't fit under my carport.

Any welder will work. You can even notch the tubes and bolt all of them together.

Made one with a cheap 110v welder. Dont shit on someone just because they bought nice equipment for doing what they love.

Didn't even have a chop saw. Just angle grinders and a cheap welder. The rear rack section is even on a hinge so it can swing in so an ATV can be loaded in without removing the rack
