I wanted to add a sail and a rudder to my Current Design Sirocco kayak that I will be using on the everglades challenge in 2025. Everything was looking good until I tried to actually use the modifications that I made, and after one rollover, the mast step broke. I know now what modifications I could make to beef up the step, but as far as practical use, my design is a failed one without being able to raise and lower the sail from a horizontal position to upright from the seated position. I did learn a lot though and I feel confident that I will be sailing my kayak in the very near future, just with a Falcon Sail next time :)

Well Slow, your a better man than I! No swimming with gators for me. After last years experience with the great white im not to sure about the gulf either. Remember me mentioning learning to brace? Now is the time. The paddle is your stability. Practice until you can get your ponytail wet. Flexibility is the key to getting into or out of your kayak. Before every paddle i must work on my flexibility especially at my advanced age. I have never been able to exit any of my boats as you have tried. I always have to get one leg out and onto something solid. For your long legs your approach maybe the only way but with the paddle behind you with it extended so the blade is almost on the boat. Ill try to draw a picture and send it. Keep on learning, you will need a reliable wet entry before March.

My email is Casey.woods.2017@gmail.com I appreciate all your advice and help you've given me, I can see and feel a difference already. I'm still going to take a sea kayak class, but so far I haven't found a school within a few hours drive yet. One problem I'm having getting in and out is that my femur bone is longer than the opening and no amount of twisting or turning gets it to fit. The best I can do is get my butt in, lift one leg in then lift my body up and out then slide my leg in. Repeat for the second one. I may need to modify my kayak or find another one with a longer opening

@@sailingslowmotion I had to modify my wife's boat after knee replacement. It was easy with a wood boat. See if you can find someone who welds rotomold. I know it is done. There are some older glass boats that have large cockpit openings that sell cheap there in Fl. The Solstice GT comes to mind designed for large guys.

It was worth the try, right? Learn something new every day. I am amazed at how you are able to come up with things. I think you get that from your dad. He was always good at that. Sometimes, it didn't work, but it helped towards finding a way that would work.

I think the knee entry needs to he higher. My experience is with Chesapeake Light Craft's kayaks, I've build 2 of them and the entry way is doomed more so you have room to maneuver your knees into position. You may want to consider amas for the kayak similar to the Windward 17 but lighter. I'm glad you filmed the dip in the water. I seem to do that frequently.

Re: paddle as "outrigger", it will happen! Your paddle blade's angle-of-attack and speed through the water will determine how much force it can apply to keep the boat upright. A diving angle on the blade will pull the blade down. A climbing angle may slow your down some, but you can lean HARD against that force. With my sailing rig, a SeaDog similar to the Falcon & Flat Earth sails, I mostly use a traditional Greenland paddle. I can extend the blade way out as an outrigger on a beam reach or downwind. I can point several degrees higher when I plunge the skinny stick deep to act as a 5' dagger board. These British-style sea kayaks tend to weather-cock; that is, they will turn to face the wind and/or current. To steer when sailing, I adjust the skeg. Downwind, let that skeg hang deep. If I want to go upwind, I pull the skeg up. Minor adjustments to the skeg are usually enough to keep these boats on course when under sail.

To answer your kayak entry question. This really depends on the brand of kayak. Some kayaks have larger cockpit holes. I have a couple kayaks that I can and a few I cannot enter as such. Yea! I have always had an interest in putting a sail on my sea kayak. But I have heard that it can be an endless fight trying to keep upright. Of course, depending on the size of the sail. The best more relaxing results is with an outrigger, as you mentioned. I have also seen people use kites to pull them. Ones like for kiteboarding. Currently in the process of building a small TriRaid 560 trimaran. Plenty of such styles in the Everglades Challange. Also, can have a much larger more substantial sized sail for power/ speed. Just have to face the hard reality. Kayaks by themselves don't make great sail boats. But it all looks fun by trying. 👍

Thanks for the reply, It seems like entry and exit would be a lot easier if I could get my legs through the cockpit from the seat, but I'll just have to make do. Are you going to use your Triraid on the EC? I'd like to see it when it's done

@@sailingslowmotion Entering a kayak legs first is a pain. And not the best design. Especially when out in the deep water making a recovery. Well for the EC. I am really seriously thinking about it. I have been learning what I can. But the biggest problem is. I am in the north central part of the US here. Lots of miles and I have become to hate traveling. More stuff to try and figure out. Looking to do a Lewis & Clark float. Start up in Central MT and go to the Mississippi or Gulf of Mexico. I was wanting to do it in a kayak. But there are just too many dams on the river. The water is backed up on each dam 100's of miles. Best to use a boat such as this Tri for more milage coverage per day. I am working hard on the Tri. I have the main hull stitched together now. Doubt I do any of these floats this year. Probably spend the first year getting the feel for the tri and its quarks.

Love the effort. I've learned more in failure than success on DIY projects. Maybe a quick fix would be the flexible mast base used by flat earth. Or the wind surfing community has other options that aren't ridgid to two points of rotation like yours. Falcon sails uses a mast base sort of like yours, but it's form fitted to the deck of each boat. I also like their under deck mount mast step. It folds up to store gear, then folds down for support. I like the mast bases (Falcon) that can fall at 360° I have no issue rolling back up after releasing the mast line. Lastly to drain from shore. Forget the pump. Just go into knee deep water, grab the bow, rotate and lift. 99% of the water comes out in 1 sec vs standing there and pumping. Now on open water the pump is helpful, but there are faster ways to drain both solo and assisted.

Hi Casey, It was also interesting what you said about trying to get into the cockpit, I have that exact same issue with mine (14’ Inuit). In fact I have even dumped it before doing that exact same thing getting back into it while it was afloat. It’s scary how much stability you loose just by lifting your butt out of the seat a couple of inches to make room to slide you legs in.

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one I guess :). I'm actually considering cutting a section out and putting a hinge on it so I can "open and close" the front section to get my legs in and out. We'll see :)

Get the Falcon sail and you're done You can order it with whichever adapter you need for the deck shape. While outriggers will put you in Class 3, sponsons do not.

I watched you get in the boat and winced, then knew instantly how you were going to get out. Injuries and embarrassment tend to happen in these transitions. I teach dozens of people this every week, first on dry land: - stand over your kayak cockpit facing forward straddling the boat - with your eyes on the horizon and your hands on the boat, drop your bottom into the seat - adjust anything and everything that needs adjusting: spray-skirt, life-jacket, paddle, anything else you might have sat on, whatever else you've got - with your eyes on the horizon and your paddle extended as an outrigger (find pressure on it), fold up one leg at a time and put it in the boat. - make further adjustments -- foot pegs, gear, skit, snacks, sail, etc. - paddle away Getting out is the reverse: - stop paddling - adjust gear for exit - remove one leg at a time and dangle your feet in the water - put your feet down gently, lift your bottom, and stand up - feel free to sit on the back deck, or pause at any time to let blood return to your legs You may have to help your knees find enough flexibility to fold them in. The above tips keep that oh-so-important center-of-gravity where you want it: low and in the boat.

I am 6'2 with a 33" inseam and wear size 11.5 shoe. The Sirocco always felt a little large for me, but I was coming from very tight and narrow Greenland-style kayaks. You may be able to find a sea kayak with an extended keyhole, but those are more likely to be expensive composite boats or custom jobs. NDK makes a boat for tall skinny people called the Latitude with an extended keyhole. Fun boat! I have a bunch of ocean cockpit kayak with a tiny round hole that I have to slide into. The trick to get into the ocean-style cockpits, for many, is to use a Greenland paddle extended behind the cockpit as an outrigger, then slide in as you do in the keyhole cockpit.

@@sailingslowmotion Hudson Valley an hour north of NYC. I am trying to figure out how I can get down to do the EC myself. I gotta retire! Regarding classes, rolling and surfing are great goals. They are a little far up the ladder of progression. The first lesson I took: four hours of rescues. We started with rescuing a non-responsive paddler and worked backwards to rescuing ourselves unassisted. Confidence to roll and surf progress from the set of skills you get when doing rescues. (Being able to tuck your legs into the cockpit becomes very important during unassisted self-rescues in the surf-zone!)

@@sailingslowmotion Yoga? A few deep breaths in hero pose every day for a week might get you closer. Feel free to use an arm or two to pull that leg in close. Sit up tall(est!) and try to get your sitz bones toward the back of the saddle, maybe tilt the top of your pelvis forward. Try it with the back-band a little loose or not there at all. I know that your landings and launches will be more difficult than they need to be if you can't get this one thing working. But hey, not everybody has that flexibility, so there are always other ways. I can use any paddle to brace behind me on solid ground, dock, paddle-float, or friend's boat to provide stability while getting to the back deck. One of my favorite activities for kids and new paddlers is to have everyone paddle around while sitting on the back deck. This builds balance and starts them on the re-entry journey.
