DIY Kayak Stake Out Pole: Kayak Fishing Hack for $15. If you are not using a stake out pole on your fishing kayak, you are missing out on a huge part of the experience! Commercial kayak poles are over priced! This rock solid DIY kayak stake out pole is a kayak fishing hack that will cost you $15 or less to make, and it only takes minutes.
Note: Some viewers have commented that these poles are no longer available. This seems to really depend on the area because they are available in my area and hundreds of viewers who have made these have confirmed they found them as well. If you cannot find this specific pole focus on locating any fiberglass pole that will be stiff enough. You can also use bamboo which is widely available as well as a long straight stick that you have smoothed out. And those are in every forest for free! Best of luck!

This quality stake out pole can also be used as a push pole if needed, though for that dual purpose longer is better!

Just got back from Lowe’s they didn’t have the all fiberglass stake out poles , they just had thin metal with plastic coating , but I did score ! Saw another vid on u tube were a guy found a pool cleaning net extending pole made out of heavy aluminum to be used as a push pole , it’s 8’ long and extends to 16’ it was $ 48.00 bucks with tax , far cheaper than a carbon fiber pole, with the convenience of being able to just put it inside the 11’ micro skiff I’m working on , ya I know a solid pole strapped to the boat going down the road looks impressive 👀 but let’s face it “ I’m cheap !” I’m still going to go around and find one of those miracle gro poles to add to the arsenal it’s a great idea thanks for posting, and tight lines 👍🏼

@@davescheer5038 You're welcome! Another idea that has served me well - go take a walk through the woods. You would be surprised how many straight or straight enough sticks / branches you will find that are 8-12 feet long. Cut to size and smooth it out some and you are in business. Tight lines!

I couldn't find any fiberglass poles at any stores in my area, so I opted for the metal, plastic coated one. I didn't really think it would have the backbone to hold in the wind we have this time of year, but after using it today, I have to say I'm pretty impressed. I put a PVC T on it, but I found out that a 3/4" threaded T could be threaded onto the plastic cap this pole has (you force it on). I also added some glue for extra hold. I lashed a carabiner to the pole using some paracord. The pole I used floats. It's a hollow, thin walled metal pipe that's capped on both ends, so it's pretty buoyant. Not enough to come out on it's own, at least not where I used it, but if I were to drop it, it would float no problem. As for how long it'll last, we'll see. But for the price, I wouldn't be mad if I got six months out of it.

Awesome idea! Keep an eye on that plastic coating. Those metal core ones are plenty sturdy and make great stake out poles but you want to monitor the coating for wear, cracks, or general breakdown. Some of them last years and years while some do not. You just don't want the coating failing and the metal rubbing up against your kayak without your knowledge. Thanks for watching, tight lines!

Easily the best kayak shallow water anchor. Makes you wonder what the markup is on the others. I went out and bought stuff this morning to make them for all my fishing buddies. Hardly cost anything per stake.

Hey thanks for watching and leaving feedback for future DIYers! Markup on kayaking gear is crazy for the most part. Sometimes it's valid, other times people just need to step back and look at their options. The reality is many of us have been kayak anglers far longer than there's been accessories. So we know to look at DIY first. That's a great thing for your buddies. Pelican sent me a stake out pole to demo that was laying around and a buddy got his first real fishing kayak. He needed stuff so I gave this pile to him and now he's rocking it!

Thanks for watching Stephen! Depending on where you are the feedback the last few months has been that this specific stake is getting harder to find. In my area it is readily in stock on any given day of the week. A good alternative is bamboo or fiberglass poles if you are unable to find this specific one. Do you have any suggestions on a pole for a pontoon? Wondering if that pole would work
@PenguinOutdoors
@PenguinOutdoors Жыл бұрын
It'll be the same concept for any watercraft. What changes with the pontoon is length. Depending on how you attach it to the pontoon I doubt this one is long enough. Easiest solution would be a long straight branch or bamboo

@Penguin Outdoors I'd definitely need a longer version, but do u think it has the strength to work with a bigger boat like that? I'm thing about a 16 ft pole as far as length goes. I figure that would get me in any water 10-12 ft

Hey, This is a GREAT idea, but was just wondering being made from fiberglass, is it safe for the wild life?? I've been around fiberglass before an it tends to come off on you if you handle it to much. An will the saltwater make it come off quicker? Or is it water proof? This is something I would like to know before I make one, just saying. An what if the FWC stops you an sees it an ask what's it made of, seems like they might not like you putting something made from fiberglass in the water, freshwater or saltwater. I think it might be wise to check an see first before you get a big fine for pollution!!! Just wondering. Tight lines😎
@PenguinOutdoors
@PenguinOutdoors Жыл бұрын
The vast majority of boats are made of fiberglass, no worries of pollution here. And to answer your question it has never come apart on me or shown any signs of wear.
@pinkydavis4223
@pinkydavis4223 Жыл бұрын
That's true, but boats have a coating on them so the fiberglass doesn't come off. I've worked with fiberglass an there are always places after you apply it that are raw an have to have a couple of layers of coatings to prevent the fibers from coming off.

It's hit or miss based on subscriber feedback. They still have them in my area, and I know a dozen or so viewers have made these in the past month, but others are having a hard time finding them. Any fiberglass pole can be used, as can bamboo and PVC. With PVC you just have to get thick walls and watch the length as the longer it is the more flex there is. And some of the best stake out poles are still long straight sticks! I have a buddy who has an 8 ft branch he found that was mostly straight and very sturdy so he sanded it and sealed it.
