A super video Stefan, really enjoyed the process, the pot did look good after just the clear epoxy, but I think it looks even more special now!

Thank you Nigel! I still haven't decided if I like it more now than before applying the gold. 😊I think on a glazed pot it would look good without the gold but I feel like unglazed pottery that was repaired just has that ancient look.

Dude, that's super satisfying. I've never heard of that technique, but it makes perfect sense; you'll never fully hide the old cracks, so just celebrate them. Love it. Really nice job, and great video. I really love your style.

Thanks man! I also only read about it recently and liked the idea so much that I had to try it out. My result is far from what a master craftsman would get with the traditional method but that's what I like about the idea of embracing imperfections. :)

Ha, ha, I am the one to blame about every thing that's bad about this puzzle so there's no money back for this one. 😁 Thank you! It was a nice experience and a good way of learning what not to do when taking on such a task. Kintsugi is definitely something you need to practice to get it right.

From my perspective it could have used even more attention to detail. 😋 Maybe it's not that obvious from the video but there are some stains (darker color) on the pot surface where I put on too much epoxy and there was a lot of squeeze out. At least now I know what to expect and maybe next time I get my hands on a broken pot I'll do this better. 😊

@@OddBonsai You’re always going to see your errors, or things you wished you did better. Trust me, from our perspective, this is awesome. But I do appreciate the update for my notes. Have you thought of brushing the inside with a coat of epoxy to strengthen the integrity of the pot?

No I didn't think of that but if I would do something like that I would probably use some slow curing epoxy. Thanks for the tip, I'll think about it.

Thanks! I used to have even more but it seems to be declining with age. 😁 This was done bit by bit over the course of one week so it should doable even for someone with less patience. To be fair I must admit I would have preferred to have fewer pieces to glue together. 😋

The patina look on that papercrete is beyond beautiful. I love this video very much! You absolutely have a talent.

Thanks! I don't know about the talent part but I'm trying my best to learn on the video editing side as well. :) The patina is just the look of the actual concrete which I mixed with a bit of red pigment plus the natural aging from being outdoors.

Hi. I have used exactly those materials myself - I'm also new to this method. One thing that you mentioned was not being completely happy with the colour of the pigment powder, in the epoxy. Something that made a better result for me was dusting the still-tacky epoxy with dry powder using a small fine-haired brush. When the epoxy is set, you can wipe off the loose dust and polish the surface of the dusted glue. This makes for a little more consistent and satisfying color. Of course the ultimate is to buy a little real gold dust and do the same thing. Then when you burnish, you get a film of actual gold. I hope to try this sometime once I'm happy with how I'm doing the other aspects of the repairs.

This was so great! I collect teacups and other crockery, and I plan on saving up things that get broken until i have enough to make buying a kintsugi kit worth it (which i sincerely hope takes a long time lol). For crockery it has to be authentic lacquer and gold in order to be able to eat and drink out of them. But for pots, I think your method is brilliant! It does the same thing and looks the same, just doesn't cost a lot uncessarily!

Lol it's always the same: Kintsugi is so nice. I want to try it. Oh, wait, I need to break something for this. 🙂 You are right, what I did here is not food safe, although I remember seeing a video on food safe epoxy somewhere. It would be nice to try out the traditional kintsugi kit but I think that would make sense if I had an expensive bonsai pot. Not a cheap home made paper creete pot.

Beautiful job! I will make use of your suggestion to use plain epoxy first, to give more strength.You might want to paint the inside of the pot as well!

Mulțumesc frumos! Se pare că japonezii (dar și alte popoare asiatice vecine) au reușit să ducă la nivel de artă practici din multe domenii , de la tâmplârie, dulgherie și creșterea copacilor în ghivece până la repararea vaselor ceramice sparte. Ce am aplicat in video este o interpretare simplificată și modernizată a tehnicii tradiționale kintsugi, iar rezultatul este clar departe de a fi perfect, dar ma bucur totuși că am reușit să-l repar.

Yes, there are some things that can be improved but I think all the little imperfections give it more character. :) I would probably be more careful to details when doing this to a glazed ceramic pot.

Thank you so much! It does take some time to complete such a project, depending on how many pieces you have to glue back. If patience is the only problem, you don't have to do it all at once. In my case the work took maybe 15 minutes a day spread over something like a week or so. I would definitely recommend trying kintsugi with something that was broken into fewer pieces than I had here. Somewhere around 5 pieces should be enough to get a nice pattern and not so many that patience becomes an issue. Good luck experimenting with kintsugi, in case I managed to convince you. :)

This looks great Stefan, I would call this an accomplishment! I thought you would scrap off the excess gold at the end but it looks you have not, will you do it later or leave it like that? I wonder what it would look like if you scrapped off the excess gold... maybe try the bottom first or try it on a different object and see how it looks

Thanks Xin! Since the gold part is only applied on the surface if I try to cut it flush I will basically remove it completely and you would only see the clear epoxy beneath. I would have liked a thinner film of gold but the mix was just to thick. Maybe next time (if there's going to be a next time 😋) I'm going to try mixing the gold in the epoxy used for gluing the pieces. That way I could cut it flush to the pot surface.

@@OddBonsai Yes that would work better. I was also thinking you could use different colour depending on which pot you are trying to stitch together. I know the japanese uses gold but I think creativity can be free here!

Yes some pot colors would be better matched to something other than gold. Even the traditional kintsugi uses several alternatives like silver, platinum, copper... I was never good at arts so it wouldn't be a good idea for me to start matching colors 😋.

I recently bought a cascade bonsai pot in a thrift store , it couldn’t be more boring looking but I had kintsugi at the back of my mind. I’ve yet to bring myself to break it though, silly really, what’s the expression? ‘The end justifies the means’? God bless all your endeavours 🙏✝️ ✌️🇷🇺☮️🇺🇦✌️

I would probably ask a friend that doesn't care much about bonsai and pots to break it for me. :) Or you could just apply the kintsugi look on the pot without breaking it. Good luck with fulfilling your kintsugi plan regardless of the approach you take!

Nice job, however I think it would look more natural if you had put the epoxy with the gold pigment in the first place. This would have enhanced the natural curves and the excess could always be scraped off later. Just my opinion!

You are probably right, but since I worked with fast setting epoxy I'm not sure if I would have managed to mix a batch of epoxy with the pigment and then carefully apply it to glue those large pieces before the epoxy started to harden. This was the reason why I decided to make it a two step process. A slower setting epoxy would probably be more suitable for such an approach.

You must have the patience of a saint putting the pot back together, then apoplying the gold pigment (was it real gold ?) I thought it turned out very well, how long did it taken in all ? Did you ever find a bonsai to compliment the bowl ?

You didn’t fill the cracks on the inside of the pot? Why?

The inside cracks were filled when I glued all the pieces back together. This is probably not so evident because the epoxy is transparent. I do not cover the inside cracks with gold color epoxy because they will not be seen since there will be soil inside the pot.

Stefan! I have been contemplating doing a video on kintsugi for so long and trying it out - I was always nervous because I would actually have to break a pot for it! But now, that’s it - one’s gonna have to go 😄 Also I have noticed the incredible amount of work you put into the editing. It really showed and looked great :)

You should definitely try it out, it's an enjoyable process. I'm with you on breaking a pot on purpose for this. I don't think I could do it, especially if it's a good expensive bonsai pot. Maybe you can find a cheap one from some dead bonsai that they usually sell in supermarkets/grocery stores/hardware stores... I appreciate your kind words on the video and I'm glad you like the result. It took a while to make this one. 😁

If the victim already has some cracks it's not that bad breqking it. 😋 When you do break it I recommend trying to limit the number of resulting pieces. 😁 The end result will look as good as if there were many more pieces but it will considerably reduce the time it takes to put it back together. If I can help with some info on kintsugi, that I may have ommited from the video, let me know. I hope Santa brings me a box of inspiration and I big sack of time (maybe a 36 hour day😋). It would help a lot with the videos. 🙂
