If you want to quickly and safely diagnose and replace defective
steering yoke (steering u-joint/universal joint), watch this video.
Knocking sound from the steering system? It's very annoying, right? Most probably, it's the steering yoke (universal joint or simply u-joint) that is the culprit. It's damaged. And, it needs to be replaced.
Learn to fix it, yourself. You can save a lot of money.
In this video, I am going to show you what the problem/issue was, with a video using my own vehicle. I provided easy and efficient way to repair it. Since most cars nowadays are equipped with SRS/airbags, working within or around the steering system is relatively dangerous and risky, if you fail to follow necessary precautions. So, I provided tips and warnings to help you execute your project in the safest possible way.

Hey I had a clunking sound in the steering of my 2007 Corolla and I went to check this joint. It turns out the top pinch bolt was tight (lock washer was crushed down) but not tight enough to pinch the clamp fully so the clamp was slightly loose. I tightened both bolts and it is solid now. Free fix! Thanks for showing how easy this part is to get to and work on.

Wasn't sure if the U-joint should easily move up the shaft like that. Thank you, you answered my question. Now, it doesn't actually DO that on my particular car, unfortunately. We already dropped the subframe once, to install a new steering rack. Might have to do so again. :(

Thank you for your feedback! It was really easy. Just be very careful not to have the steering wheel rotate when it's disconnected from the yoke as it might damage the wiring on the steering.

Nice. But I have a question for my corolla 2011. When I turn left, the steering wheel doesn't return to complete center, it stays a bit to the left. Right turn is fine. Could it be because of U-joint ?
@autorepairdiywithsam4523
@autorepairdiywithsam4523 4 жыл бұрын
Hi jin5632! Thank you for watching my video! I am thinking your issue is an alignment issue. Maybe, the caster is off. I read from an article that problem with steer centering is usually caused by caster being off. Try to have front end alignment first to see if it's an alignment issue. If after having alignment done, and turns out that your alignment is within specifications, then we could say that something is binding or worn, like ball joints, tire rod ends, etc. Simple way to test if something is worn or binding: 1. Jack up the front end of the car high enough to have the wheels move freely. Don't forget to put wheel chokes on the rear wheels. And, please put the front end in jack stands. 2. Have the engine run 3. Grab the tire in 3 and 9 o'clock positions, and turn the wheels back and forth from side to side 4. Notice for creaking or clunking sounds or hardness as you turn the wheels. Any of these symptoms might be an indication that something is worn or binding. I hope this helps. Get your hands dirty to save some money. Be safe!

nice vid!! i just have one quention tho, i have a 2000 camry and from time to time the steering gets very stiff and then gets better and then very stiff again making it difficult to steer. i'm thinking this is the u joint also because i read in a forum that this could cause this. if this is the problem, my question is when i go to buy the new part, is it called the intermediate steering shaft? i looked online and it looks like the yolk in this vid but just wanted to make sure, thanks!!

@autorepairdiywithsam4523
@autorepairdiywithsam4523 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you, Carlos! No, I really don't know if it's the same process. What you can do is to check if the yoke has 2 pinch bolts to see if you have just the yoke itself or you have a intermediate steering shaft sub-assembly, particularly if you have a telescoping steering. Basically, what you watch in my video is the basic procedure. It might be slightly different for different cars and models. Our 2007 Corolla didn't have a telescoping steering, so the yoke is separate from both the steering shaft and the steering gear. I hope this helps.

Great video. My steering seems a little stiff at a certain point when left for a day. It’s like it is rubbing. May well be wear on the universal joint. No effect on movement of wheels and no play in link between steering and movement of wheels. Going to apply silicon grease to both lower universal joint and top joint on shaft and see what happens.

Recently, I’ve changed my intermediate steering shaft on my 2011 Chevy impala. Now when I start my car, the service airbag light comes on. Also, when i attempt to drive It I can’t make a left turn. I noticed you had cords hooked up to steering wheel to keep it from moving, unfortunately for me I didn’t do that. Is there a way to get it back to centered position?
@autorepairdiywithsam4523
@autorepairdiywithsam4523 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, Ali! Thanks for watching my video! The reason I put the bungee cords on the steering wheel, hooked to the driver seat, is to prevent the steering wheel from turning while the steering shaft and the steering gear are disconnected. If you didn't hook bungee cords, your steering wheel might spinned to the left while you were working on it. And, I am pretty sure it damaged the spiral wires in your steering column, particularly the one for the airbag. You might be able to recenter the steering wheel, if you redo it. But, if I were you, I rather have it done by an honest professional mechanic or a Delearship, to be safe. It is so risky and dangerous to drive it with a damaged and malfunctioning airbag. It might deploy while driving, especially in high speed driving. I strongly suggest you have to have it fixed the soonest time possible. Have it towed to a repair shop. Be safe! Again, thank you very much!

Hi! Kumusta Kabayan! Thank you for your comments, and for watching! To be honest, I really don't know. There are a lot of reasons for a power steering to turn hard. One reason would be, you might have low level of power steering fluid. You might want to check the power steering fluid first, and maybe consider replacing it when you think it's dirty. Or, you might want to apply white grease or silicone lubricant to the yoke itself to see if that would make your steering wheel spin a little bit easier. Another one would be, a damaged steering rack. Our Corolla still turns easy, only I was annoyed with the clacking sound, so I replaced it.

Hello kabayan. Tanong ko lang po. I drive a 91 Pajero. When i turn the wheel to the left, smooth naman. But when i turn right, initially its smooth but then it hardens and feels like you hit the end in a quarter turn but if you keep turning it smoothens out until you lock it all the way. What could be the problem? Salamat!

omg. my car has a clacking noise whenever i drive. i almost changed the CV axel or the wheel bearing just to relize that the black plastic cone that covers it is stuck.

LOL It's good you realized sooner than later especially if you already bought your parts. It's going to be frustrating. You can return the parts though. When changing either the CV Axle or the wheel bearing, you'll surely at some point during the repair process to access the steering wheel, and voila you'll come to realize that it's just the plastic cover that's stuck and in direct contact with the steering shaft.

I am from the UK. I have a 2006 Corolla with a noisy rattle - I have been told it is from the intermediate steering shaft. My Toyota dealer wanted £300 !! for the new part, plus fitting. There does not seem to be an after market part available (in UK). Could you tell me the price of the part in the USA ? I have a friend in USA who could get it for me. Thanks in advance.

Hi Philip! Thanks for watching! The part, which is called Yoke Sub-Assy, costs $117.67 from www.toyotapartsdeal.com. The part number is 45209-02041. I don't know if that's what your Toyota Dealer in UK was talking about when they said intermediate shaft. If you go to www.toyotapartsdeal.com, they have intermediate shaft with part #45221-05011 listed different from the yoke sub-assembly. Intermediate shaft, which I believe, is called steering gear input shaft, costs $165.36. That's the part that connects the lower part of the yoke. In some other year models, the intermediate shaft includes the yoke and shaft together as one assembly. In my case, the one causing the clunking noise whenever I turn the steering wheel was the yoke.

And, if you do the service yourself, please don't forget to put bungee cords on the steering wheel, before you disconnect the parts to prevent damage to the spiral wires located in the steering column. This part of the process is extremely important.

@@autorepairdiywithsam4523 Hi thanks, the part number is 45260-02031. I have definitely identified it as this part that needs to be replaced. If you adjust the steering wheel so that it is fully out, the rattle disappears. So it is the splines on the intermediate shaft that are worn causing the problem. I will check your link. Thanks
