This video will show you how to build a frame from scratch with affordable items, attach them, and apply the feathers to create a large wing set!
This video is in collaboration with www.FeatherPlace.com
They provided the feathers used for these RocketMan wings
Approximate Numbers of Feathers used in this build: (Includes both front and back)
Turkey Quills Left: ~90
Turkey Quills Right: ~90
Rooster Coque Tails Feathers Black Iridescent 15-18: ~220
(I cut a lot down so you could mix this up with the smaller lengths as well)
Rooster Coque Tail Feathers Dyed Over Chinchilla Red 15-18": ~200
(Can be mixed with the 7-10" feathers as well instead of all long)
Rooster Coque Tails Bleach Dyed Red: ~100
I have wanted to create a DIY wing build for you guys for a long time now and I am so happy to be able to finally bring you one! The feather types I used are:

- Paper Roll
- Painters Tape
- Sewing needles and Thread
- Galvanzised Wire (armature wire)
- 20 Gauge wire
- Wire Coat Hangers
- Pliers and wire cutters
- Upholstry Foam (often found in fabric stores)
- Wire Mesh Fabric (no stretch) Basic craft/gift fabric
- Back Pack Utility Vlecro Straps
- Hot glue + Glue Gun

Thank you for doing a wire frame tutorial. I can only find PVC pipe tutorials, this is a nice alternative.

I never thought I wanted to make wings..... now im sitting here planning wings lol. I cant believe you made it look so easy making them, I have a feeling I will end up with glue all over and 2 rolls worth of tape stuck to its self and twisted all over the floor but I have to try now lol.

Incredible work. I especially appreciated all the steps you put into stabilizing and reinforcing your frame. I've watched about 8 videos so far and no one has done anything even remotely like that. Which is crazy to me, because if you're going to invest the time to make them as well as the cost of materials, wouldn't you want something a little bit more sturdy than cardboard to protect that investment?

Dammit. I already made (folded) wings for my masquerade phoenix. My masquerade peacock is going to have the tail up, so these wings wouldn't work. Oooh! I could do a Valkyrie! And the frame could be built into the armor.

Hi thanks so much for a great video. Is this method of support brace / frame comfortable? I see some people use like hard shoulder "hooks"... which in your opinion is more comfortable?

I found it very comfortable but I can see how the "hook" method would work well too. I think it would come down to what costume or outfit you're wearing it with for what would work best :) I also think if you were doing like floor length, extra heavy wings, the hooks might be better because they would probably have a pvc or metal base to them for more support.

Hi Linden! Honestly the steps would be exactly the same, but even easier becuase the frame just needs to be smaller, and less feathers needed ^_^

Thanks for sharing! What a great tutorial! I started planning this costume build last week and only just ordered the crystals for the body suit. Now I'm planning the wing build; finding your tutorial was perfect! A couple questions for you: 1.) Do you know the various amounts of feathers that you used for each of the various feather types? 2.) I'll reach out to featherplace.com. Did you work with anyone in particular who might remember your order (so I can reference it)?

Hello, I have updated the description with approximate numbers of how many feathers I used. I forgot to count as I made the wings so the Coque Tails I used could be of varied lengths but those are about the right numbers :)
