I recently bought a wood lathe, and I needed to build a cart for it to sit on. The workbench I was using made it just a little too tall. I wanted to build a simple, DIY lathe cart using mostly 2x4's and scrap plywood...so that's what I did.

Nice build! Pop those feet off the lathe and shoot four 2" lag screws into the top to lock down that lathe. Also, a great way to store a dust mask is with the inside facing down; keeps dust from collecting inside it. A short dowel with a tennis ball on the end (like a wig stand) works really well for this.

Very simple, nice, effective, and practical cart design. Plan to make a numbre of them for each of my bench-top tools (oscillating sander, band saw, drill press, scroll saw, jointer, planer, belt-disc sander, router table, grinder, and small CNC router.

Bruce, I made a cart for my new thickness planer today. Super simple and only cost four 2x4s. I had some plywood that worked out ok. I didn’t get as fancy with the trim on the top but I will probably replace the top and then add the trim and drawer. Thanks for the idea!

Good Job oaths build sir, I built a lathe cart a few weeks ago. I like the added drawer you made for yours. I will more than likely add a drawer to mine, looks easy enough and like you say, it don't take long and you have a bunch of extra parts and pieces that a drawer would be handy to have to put them all in. Enjoyed your video, looking forward to seeing more from your channel so you have a another new sub here sir. Thanks again and have a blessed week. Dale

Thanks, Robin! It can be such a frustrating thing to mess something up so simple. Just glad I caught it at all. I thought the walnut added a lot of depth for the design of such a piece.

beautiful but how do you find the stability? would it be attachable to the bench top?
@BruceAUlrich
@BruceAUlrich 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The stability is pretty good since I went with large, double locking casters. I’m sure you could attach it to the bench top. I’ve not done that and don’t have much issue with it moving. The only time I’m had it scoot around is when turning an 11” diameter blank on my 12” lathe. Ha ha. It was pushing the limits of what it could do.

Nice build, direct and simple. Nice presentation as well. What were the final dimensions? Caster size?
@BruceAUlrich
@BruceAUlrich 4 жыл бұрын
Hey Joe...thanks! I don't remember the final dimensions. I based it off of my Nova Comet ii that was building it to fit. The casters are 3.5", I believe. They're the heavy-duty, double locking type from Home Depot. I've had good success with those over the years.

Nice job! Did you think about bolting your lathe to the top instead of it just sitting on the rubber feet? Also, was there any problems with the lathe being on the cart that has casters while you were turning. Reason I ask these is because I have the same lathe and I like your simple design. Any input on both the pros and cons of your setup after using it a while would greatly be appreciated.
@BruceAUlrich
@BruceAUlrich Жыл бұрын
Hey Paul! I still use this cart now with the same lathe. I’ve not had any issue with it being on wheels. It might not be a bad idea to bolt it down. I’ve only had an issue with that when I’m pushing the limits of this small lathe. Overall, though, I really like it. I think I might put the tool holder on the back side instead of near the tail stock. That gets in the way a little.
