In this video, I install an outside LED area light and show later in the video how amazingly bright it is on a 21plus ft pole compared to a mercury area light.

in the future any post pole etc your putting in the he ground out first foot of dirt then cement if needed. water will always get between cement and post if surrounded it pools at bottom causes rust or dry rot in wood. allow the water to get back out at bottom

It's only because it's winter and we've had lots of rain. Other wise in the summer our clay soil turns to concrete.

Where I live you can pay for a security light to be placed on your property. The cost is about $12/month and that includes any electricity it uses. We h ave a big green transformer box next our driveway right across from the end of our house. The pole for the light is right next to the transformer box. If we had placed the light anywhere else, we would have to have fun the trench. The cost of $12/month is really a great deal. We did not have to pay any anything for the install. Awesome deal.

Hopefully that light will be very reliable. I've had led lights that last only until the warranty expires. Might be worth the money to rent a manlift if you have to change it......or dig and tip the pole over.

Fun DIY channel really getting it done. Any idea how you will change out the bulb, sensor or wire when the sunlight or rain breaks them down? I don’t think you can lean a 20 foot extension ladder up against that pole?
@petebeasttexashomesteading
@petebeasttexashomesteading 4 жыл бұрын
It's LED so the only thing would be to change the sensor but I'm planing on strapping an extension ladder to it and stabilizing it with my tractor front loader from the opposite side.

I had one of those lights until the photo cell went bad, couldn't find one just like it. Bought a Brightech - LightPRO LED Yard Light has an electric eye in front . Rain water got in under the seal of photo cell, ruined it New one has been up a year and is still bright. Cost was $ 54.99
@petebeasttexashomesteading
@petebeasttexashomesteading 4 жыл бұрын
The Turn Lock Photocell plugs are pretty standard. You can get them at home depot and some you might need to trim the plastic cover at the bottom to fit properly or flush with the top of the light housing.

I wonder if a bead of sealant would help with waterproofing/longevity of the photo eye connection. It looks like a weak link as far as water intrusion is concerned.

Thanks, no bulbs it's an LED light but i my have to change the light sensor on top one day. I plan on leaning my tractor front loader up high against the pole and tying a extendable ladder on the opposite side and climb up.

Have you thought about motion sensors so the lights aren't on using electricity all night when they aren't actually needed for security? If the light goes on you know something is out there. Less light pollution is another plus. I also like the 5,000K for outside lighting, like a full moon on a clear night.

As much as i do agree LED can be brighter, and a little more energy efficient than High pressure sodium, ive decided im lighting my property "14 acres" with high pressure sodium and even 4 mercury vapor lamps. Im also lighting around my workshop which is a very large building with HPS.. My house though has 4 spot lights with 2 arms each, and on those I do have LED spot lights on those. I will argue though is your mercury vapor light new ? The bulbs lose brightness drastically over a few years and need replaced.. despite them working thats also why they look green because as they age they turn greener.. i bet if you replaced the bulb in that mercury vapor lamp it would have been 2-3x brighter. That LED you linked is only 8900 lumens, a 175W mercury vapor bulb is 8-9k lumens, if you simply replaced the bulb with a frosted one you would have seen the mercury vapor was actually a pretty bright light. That 100w of power you saved will take years to pay itself off over the costs you just spent installing this LED light lol. Im guessing you spent around $50 for the pvc and junction box, and considering UF-B wire for 14/2 is around 130$ for 250 ft, with that pole and concrete, and the $80 light, the breaker in your house.. i bet you spent what $300-400 ? to do this. Lets do some math here, 100w of power x10 hours a day is 1 kw of power. 1 KWx7 days x4 weeks is 28kw of energy. 28kw at the average of 10-12 cents is $3 a month in savings... 3$ x 12 months is 36$ a year, 36x10 years is 370$.. Congrats. by the time your 60 you will have got your money back. LED is not worth replacing 1 fixture over, the costs are not there.. LED is only worth doing if you replace dozens of bulbs or fixtures, i also hope that chinese light lasts you more than 1-2 years. I have seen nothing but bad reviews with led light fixtures.. Even my buddy who works for the power company, he has tried to convince me to replace the 2 Mercury Vapor lights on my utility pole for awhile, but when i asked him about the LED fixtures the company he uses and how reliable they are, he has admitted to me they do go bad occasionally and hes had to replace them.. The mercury vapor lamps i have on this pole have been there for 30 years now Also that wire is not deep enough, needs to be 18-24 inchs deep since your using pvc.. if you used metal conduit you could get away with 6 inchs

@@Trainguy9770backup hid is way more efficient than incandescent. I dont keep my 7 mercury vapors on every night. Jut two and i turn the others on for when i need em The leds i use are flood lights theyre great for that i really need more light situation. But theyre blinding like other leds. On 14 acres i honestly prefer the clear mercury vapor bulbs for the blue green glow and the orange hps. Over led and the white bulb mercury vapors. Reason is the white light is too much for a peaceful mood around the property. The floods are the lights i use if i really need better visual quality

The dark earth society people in my area would have a big problem with what you’re doing. 🤣 For me, feeling safe in your own home is more important than anything. It’s putting up a few lights around your home keeps predators or criminals away, then you do it. I’d go even so far as putting up a trail camera so you can keep an eye on things.
