Learn how to make your own grow lights!
This is a fairly easy project with few tool requirements. To make your own grow lights, you're only going to need a hot surface, hot air (heat gun or reflow station), some solder paste, and LED components & mounting surfaces!

Sure thing! What are you growing? the type of plant and size of your grow space are pretty big variables in picking out the wattage and color temperature for your light. These LED modules are a big improvement over the old CREE lights, and they are quite a bit cheaper as well. You just need to select the color profile for your plant. A blend of higher CCT (5000K - 6500K) and lower CCT (2700K - 3500K) is usually a good idea, with more high CCT used for vegetative plants and more low CCT used for fruiting plants. LEDs: www.digikey.ca/product-detail/en/samsung-semiconductor-inc/SPHWH2L3D30ED4RTM3/1510-1799-1-ND/6569457 The power supply will constrain the number of LEDs you need. For this video, I used an IDLC-25-700, which only supplies about 22W of light to the LEDs. That's not enough for a big healthy plant usually, especially if it produces flowers or fruit. you'll likely need something like this: Power Supply: www.digikey.ca/product-detail/en/mean-well-usa-inc/XLG-75-H-A/1866-5628-ND/10129176 Note that those Samsung LEDs have a MAX stable current tolerance of 1.4A, which is what this driver supplies, so it might be a good idea to buy twice as many lights and run them in parallel, which will maintain the same voltage over each line, but cut the current in half. When you string up LEDs in parallel, it's also important to make sure that you have the same number of EACH color in each parallel line. circuits wired in parallel always have the same overall voltage drop, but some different LED colors require different voltage drops for a specified current. All that means is that if you have different ratios of different colored lights wired in parallel, one or more of the lines might not turn on at all, while the ones that do will have more current than they should.

I work in lighting and I make grow lights. I would recommend looking up Flood optics to get higher PAR reading from your LEDs, Those look like the common nichia diodes so you should be able to find some. WIthout using flood optics to direct the light down like a beam, a lot of light with be wasted going in other directions being inefficient, your plant won't like that and they won't get efficient lighting to survive to harvest. this is cool though. just add some flood optics to the thing and you got yourself a great grow light. i would look into adding 1 red LED and 1 UV LED

Good approach. To save time, one can purchase led modules on metal strips. I used several such strips attached with automotive thermal sealant to an aluminum c-channels, then made then attached them to an aluminum frame. Using a c-channel doubles as a poor man's lens, reducing sideways light spill and redirecting it downwards. Same as here with the power supply, same with underpowering. When the time comes, I just get them out of storage and put them above the stuff that needs to grow, like cucumber plants. These lights double as work lights when needed as well.

@@autumnmaticcreations62 it really is well done. You wouldn't be a poor student if you could build grow lights for dc off grid systems. The demand is huge and the supply is nil. Put together some plug and go systems for direct alligator clip to a 12v system and mark up parts and give yourself 30- 40 an hour and you wont be broke long.

recent build.. $9.99 for 600mAh driver on ebay running 10-18 "3W" leds 10 "3W" leds run $5 to $9 depending on colour i used 3 colours, 17 leds, total under $30. selected 660nm deep red, "full spectrum" which has a bit of 465nm blue and covers red up to IR , and some 415nm (blue-violet) to hit chlorophyll a blue band (most people miss this). 3W leds are actually 2W, apparently the convention is to call them 3W. top tip when drilling aluminium: keep the drill bit wet. aluminium tends to shear and chunk, if wet it drills 3x faster and much tidier. press some kind of dimple into the spot where you intend to drill first, to center the bit. i don't like to use lenses because of the light reduction. these cheap star mounted "bead" leds still have a wiide angle, so build reflectors also.

@Glory to God you seem knowledgeable. So let me ask you this, what kinda percentage impact does water have on a lights par and ppf? I'm asking as I want to calculate fall off at varying heights in my aquarium but obviously measuring these values under water is problematic. And par is good because it will give you a good indication of a lights overall potential when combined with the data on colour spectrum for the led

By the math, your LED's are 2.17W each. I made mine using 1W Grow LED's already on a star plate and series two circuits of 50 LED's each then parallel those two. The voltage rating was 3.2V-3.4V (350Ma) for each LED. This made the voltage of the series set 160V-170V rated. This way I can run them directly from the 120VAC house supply through a bridge rectifier and a capacitor (220VDC 1000MFD) for voltage stabilization and to capture the RMS peaks of the AC which makes me end up with 156VDC +/-. This is perfect allowing headroom for thermal variables and utility company line power fluctuations. I attached them using thermal silicone to a 4'X4' aluminum sheet that is .063 inch (1/16") thick. This makes a 4 foot by 4 foot light panel at 100W, although I believe I need to add some 3000k white ones for spectrum balance.

Hey Andrii, I didn't measure the temperature. It did get pretty hot at equilibrium (probably between 60 - 70 degrees Celsius), which reduces the efficiency of the lights a bit. Cree's and Samsung's 3535 LEDs are tough though, they should still last a long time even when they're running hot.

Thanks! Unless your lights are going to be in the splash zone, I would not worry about water too much. If you want to err on the side of caution, you could look into silicone sealing spray - just make sure it can handle high temperatures. Anything rated for outdoor use should be fine.

Is there a way to fix the LEDs to where you can fit more and much closer together? Kind of like when you look at the Mars hydro grow lights. I would like to pack as many LEDs into a 24in x 24in square. This is all totally new to mebut I have a feeling building my own will save me a lot of money and I would learn quite a bit which knowledge is power. I really want to build a super awesome grow light and I will even get heat sinks and fansto keep everything super cool if anybody has any suggestions or maybe I don't have to get the super small LEDs and I can find bigger ones? Any ideas or advice or information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance to whoever is nice enough to respond.

If I were to make an LED array like the ones from spiderfarmer (a square array) what sort of Mean Well would be required. Thanks bud for any help. Also, is that a 3d printer beside you? If so, what would you use it for? I was thinking of creating a Rodin coil among other things. Again thanks for any help. Great video.

Thank you man, excellent work! How can find out the best spectrum/LED arrangement (by type, not position) for a wide variaty of cannabis strains? Would you reccomend building two seperate setups for vegetation and bloom or one setup with an on/off switch for red-spectrum LEDs?

I've read lots of info on grow lights and have drawn the conclusion that all these magenta "grow lights" are pointless, so just good white leds are fine. I go with high-CRI LEDs as my grow lights are used only in spring and in the remaining time double as work lights. Don't know if you find this useful but in any case, wish you luck.
