This time I show how I've made the cross slide of my DIY metal mini lathe. No welding: even this part has been made without welding but joining the elements together with epoxy and pins, avoiding the risk of deformations. In this part only the cross slideway is shown while in the next episode I'll show the cross slide's sled.
A final episode will contain the whole assembly and alignment on the carriage and the lead screw.
You will notice that this cross slide is particularly long, this is because this lathe is designed to be ready to host a milling attachment.

I can only guess from your accent that you're Italian, but your accuracy of workmanship, using basic tools only, would put even a Bavarian to shame. Yes, indeed, show us all the nitty-gritty steps you've put into the making of this precision lathe of yours we're all waiting for to conclude. Keep up the good work mate!

LOL :) Thank you mate! ...but, actually I think that while we are influenced by the culture of the people with which we grow up, ultimately it is up to us only, everyone of us, to make the difference as individuals, so I hope no Bavarian (nor Italian) will feel ashamed :) BTW, I am not a native speaker of Italian, though I live in northern Italy and know Italian quite decently. Funny part is my ancestors belonged to a people that probably moved from south Bavaria to the southern side of the Alps, probably around a thousand years ago, which is a long time, but a few of them still today speak a language that has Germanic roots. Love from the southern side of the Alps.

@@AccidentalScience # Lol...then you're might be a Bavarian after all, eh? I had been to Munich a couple of times and it is definitely a fine place, just like Italy. I had been to the Munich Technical Museum that gives an excellent rundown on the major mechanical history since the Industrial Revolution. Bavaria is definitely ranked amongst the top-brass of developers compared to the rest of Germany and even the world. I am not trying to be prejudice here nor taking sides with anyone, however, I do like Italian sports cars and engineering also.

@@sibalogh of course Muenchen/Munich is special. The "Munich Technical Museum" ...do you mean the Deutsches Museum? I think it's the best museum in Europe, au pair with the Science Museum in London. I'd love to come back one day, hopefully this sh*t of covid will end and vaccination will work even for variants ...we really need Schengen to be fully operative again.

I also have a hand held belt sander! I didn't know how to use and it was collecting dust but now I'm going to give it a try at a lathe building. Wow! I feel so excited! Kidding of course :-) Watching you building this lathe for me is similar to watching Joe Pass playing his guitar. Both beyond my reach...

This is far beyond my capacity, sorry. It would be a great achievement being able to post a video every week, but at the moment it is impossible for me as I am also doing many other things. Just for filming and editing takes me one or two days per video. Add the work of designing and making the part, and some of these parts require a lot of time to be made. The ways of this cross slide are parallel and flat within 1/100 mm and that alone required about three days of work. I appreciate your comment, cheers.

Located makes a glue for steel that is so strong that some gun makers use it to glue barrels into shotgun receivers. Looks like a good match for your projects.

I think that you are using a little much blueing ink, normally the layer is just thick enough to show a light faint of blue👍🏻 that way you get a more accurate reading of the contact points

It's phthalocyanine blue, even with a small amount it gives a deep bright blue shade. Downside is it's hard to get rid of.

Mixing Resin onto the work piece is definitely good idea if the piece has enough wide area to mix well, but here, i think mixing it separately would be better.

If his point is to reduce waste, I would have at least scraped it off into a cup, mix it well and then reapply it.

Super video and spectacular result, the final product looks almost as if it has been turned from a single peace of metal! My only concern is how strong is it to stick pieces of metal together using resin instead of welding, I would be afraid it breaks anytime. Are you using special resin and do you have an idea of the force it can handle?

Btw, what type of steel did you make your slides? I noticed you used high-tensile screws, didn't you?

Cold rolled mild steel ...making them flat/straight *after* all the other work. Yes they're high tensile strength screws: I like their color 🙂 and they're more rigid.

Why is it specifically copper? Could you also coat it with nickel now?

It would require a large oven and heat may lead to deformations.

your drill press is more accurate than a handtap . . no need for electricity, just remove the cord of the drill press and put the tap in the chuck then twist the pulley with your hand . . better result . . of course make sure your drill press is level to the table
