I was really excited to try one of these new miniature dollhouse kits which have more complex structures and beautiful designs. I love this one in particular which combines industrial, boho and mid-century modern elements. If you remember my older DIYs, the dollhouse kits from 2016 were usually single rooms with cute but kitschy furniture. The packaging was very basic which has also been massively upgraded in these newer versions. However after making everything, I found it also has some drawbacks. The learning curve was significantly higher which I didn't expect just by looking at the image. #miniature​​ #dollhouse #diy
PROS:
- Beautiful packaging with very clear instructions
- Comes with free tools including tweezers and a paintbrush.
- The designs are extremely fun to build. There are lots of other kits in this series like greenhouses, cafes, bakeries, bookshops and it's hard to decide which ones to make first
- Great value for money. Most of these kits cost around $30-40 and take 10-15 hours to complete. You can easily spend an intense weekend or 1-2 weeks of casual crafting on a single dollhouse.
CONS:
- You have to paint some of the pieces yourself which is an annoying and slightly unnecessary step.
- The wooden pieces come from a sheet of laser-cut plywood that can break easily if you're not careful. The pieces from the older kits were much higher quality and pre-painted.
- The electrical system is trickier to set up. The most dangerous aspect is the black shrink wrap used for sealing the wires. The instructions literally tell you to use a lighter flame on it (!!) After setting off the fire alarm in my last video there is no chance I'm messing around with an open flame. In the older kits, you were simply given a piece of electrical tape to wrap around the wires and those worked perfectly well.
