I decided to make my own modeling paste for crafting. It is easy and inexpensive to make and works beautifully. I purchase supplies wherever I can get them the least expensive, as I make and use modeling paste a lot.
NOTE: Do use a face mask, to avoid inhaling powder, while mixing the paste, and while sanding it, if smoothing the dried paste is necessary. Drying times depend on how thick you apply it and the temperature of the room. 48 hours for sure, if it's a thin layer (like smearing it using a regular thin stencil)... If it's used thicker than that, for sure after 1 week it will be fully dried. This particular paste is meant for crafting & decorative purposes (to resurface and/or create texture and can even be used like adhesive/grouting for air-dry clay tiles). I have not tried it in moulds to create a solid individual object. I've used it with regular stencils, and it worked well.
RECIPE:
1/2 cup 120 Grams Baby Powder
1/3 cup/80 ml Crafting Glue
3 Tablespoons/44 Grams White Acrylic Paint
DIRECTIONS: Mix ingredients together well, and store in an airtight (preferably glass) container. It is best to use each batch as soon as possible, as the mix will lose moisture over time.

3 questions: 1. Is it absolutely necessary that this DIY modeling paste is used immediately after it is made, or can it stored then used some time later (such as maybe a week later)? 2. If an interested in trying sculpture painting involving different colors, would you recommend: (a) making a batch of white model paste, scooping up the needed amount and blending it with the desired color of acrylic paint, or (b) making smaller batches of the DIY modeling paste, but substituting the desired colors instead of the white acrylic paint used in the video? 3. Any recommendation on how to make the texture of the DIY modeling paste as smooth as possible (and not grainy)?
@MocasWorld
@MocasWorld Жыл бұрын
Great questions! 😉 1. You can make it and store it in an airtight container. A glass jar would work best. But try to use it as soon as possible because it becomes less moist/thicker with time. 2. I think option "b" would work fine because adding additional colored acrylic paint will change the texture, if even slightly. Although ...you may just want to try one small batch of option "a", because it may just be a better texture for your sculpting needs. 3. The texture of mine was not grainy. Mix it well and keep it covered in between scooping. But again.. try a small batch of option "a" and see if the adding the additional acrylic paint for coloring will smooth it out more to your liking. Happy Sculpting! 😀

Hello, thanks for your post. Do you know if it cracks when it dries? I mean is this paste flexible?
@MocasWorld
@MocasWorld Жыл бұрын
It is not flexible when dry. The thinner the dried edges or peaks the more brittle it seems to be. The flatter or smoother you apply it, the better. I've also used it as grout/adhesive for my DIY Air Dry Clay Tile projects and the parts exposed are fine. I would say it's meant to be applied, dried and can even be painted/varnished. But the idea is that it is for decorative purposes and not to be bothered once you are done with the project. Try a batch and see how it works for your project. Let me know how it turns out. I used quite a lot of it to create a smooth surface in my DIY Decorative Pumpkins kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jauaa9hh38yzl40.html

I didn't notice the smell after I mixed it. It depends on how strong the baby powder scent is in the first place. But after application of the paste then it drying and any further crafting, like painting it, any BP scent would likely be faint at most.

I only make small batches and use it up within a week 2 at most, so it's hard to say how long it will last. It dries a little over time, even in an airtight container (because you have to open the container during use) so I recommend making it in small batches, storing in a glass jar and using as soon as possible, for best results.

Actually if you have a lot of smooth dust residue (no chunks) you could reuse it in your next batch of paste. Let me know how your project works out.

It should as long as the bottle is free of grease... if you notice in the video I did it on the plastic cap. I've used it on various other surfaces as well. The key is to let it dry thoroughly. And I use it for crafting, so once the project is done I don't handle it much.

From my experience, no, it's not flexible when it dries. And it's best not to handle it too much after the project is completed. The paste will however adhere to just about any surface, even curved ones.

Minor hairline cracks may form, depending on the surface it's used on and the amount used. Once dried properly, you can fill any cracks with additional modeling paste, then allow that to dry thoroughly.

@MocasWorld 3 ай бұрын
HI...I only use it for "thin" layers... mainly to smooth out surfaces... fill cracks... and create 3D/raised look. And even then, depending on the project, there may be hairline cracks once dry. But I just use a bit more paste to fill the cracks, then allow that to dry. I suggest if you are wanting such thick layers #1 Create a batch of the paste to test it #2 Apply in thin layers, drying thoroughly in between, until you get to the desired thickness. If you do try it please let me know the outcome.

Is there any chance of getting crack on painting if we use this type of homemade texture paste.
@MocasWorld
@MocasWorld 11 ай бұрын
The only way to know for sure is to try it. It's durable for crafting. But there are things that can affect the the final outcome/appearance of dried texture paste.. for example, the type of paint used, the type of brush/applicator used, the amount of pressure and technique used while painting. I personally use the paste for decorative crafting only and once it is painted and dried, I try not touch or manipulate the object too much.

I used it in a large canva and it cracked a lot. Is there any suggestion to avoid that?
@MocasWorld
@MocasWorld 9 ай бұрын
@@milotorres4684 you mean on canvas? After it is completely dried, you could use a small paintbrush with the paste to GENTLY fill the cracks. Then allow that to dry thoroughly. That may be tedious if there are really a lot of cracks but I think thats the best solution. I have not personally used it extensively on canvas. You could also try putting a little extra acrylic paint when mixing a new batches paste, and try it. Depending on how thick you're applying it, it may be better to do 2 thin layers drying thoroughly in between. Trial and error. Let me know how it goes if you are able to solve the issue, in case someone else has the same problem. Best of luck 🍀

Depends on how thick the petals would be... and if you are laying/building it on a flat surface or stand-alone. Probably best to just make a small batch (maybe 1/4 of the recipe) and try it. Let me know if you do it and if it works or not. If it doesn't, I've used air-dry clay to make thick 3D flowers. But mine are all attached to a flat surface.

can we use corn flour instead of baby powder?

Corn flour is likely more absorbent than baby powder or cornstarch, and you would have to use the really finely grounded one, to have a similar texture. The only way to know for sure if it will work, is to try to make a small batch to test it. If you do, pls let me know how it turns out.

Is adding water a no-no, cause I added some to my baby powder mix because it was to thick and chalky and it became like starch with water, you know, when ya hit it, it's hard like rock but when stirred gently it's very runny. Why did this happen when I didn't use starch, but used baby powder which is talcum I thought???
@MocasWorld
@MocasWorld 2 ай бұрын
Correct.. adding water is a no-no because it changes the chemical make-up and effectiveness of the paste. Most baby powders are made with some cornstarch. Whatever consistency you get after using the recipe exactly as it is, should work. But if you are doubting it, I suggest testing a very small amount of the paste on your project and allow it to dry completely. If it's too brittle or not to your liking, then add more glue AND acrylic paint in equal amounts. Start with 1 teaspoon of each. Then test it again. Please use a mask so as not to inhale the dust from the powder, when mixing and if you sandpaper the project.

@MocasWorld OH thank you so much, I will be trying it again following your steps and will hope that works better 😊 Question: Do I pull the stencil off while the paste is still wet or world it be better to let it sit for a minute or two? I thought that pulling it off right away, was the cause of it spreading out and not holding its shape. Thank you fellow crafter.
@MocasWorld
@MocasWorld 2 ай бұрын
@@jean-63 The paste shouldn't be runny. If it is runny after mixing it, allow it to thicken for an hour or so. (I'd say the consistency is little bit thicker/drier than toothpaste). Store it in a tightly covered glass jar if you have one, because it naturally dries out over time. Since it shouldn't be runny like I said, you should be able to apply it using a stencil then carefully remove the stencil right away. The object you're stenciling should lay flat and let it remain in that position till the paste dries. (Don't fight gravity you know 😉)

Hi.. I only use it for decorative crafting and once I use it for a project, I try not to manipulate it in any way.
