Nice looking sofa. Personally, if I were building one of these I would put a 1x6 on each armrest and along the backrest and I would put the bottom 2x4 of each end the full dimension from front to rear rather than between the front and rear and put stand-offs to keep the sofa apart from the concrete floor about 1" or 1 1/2".

Thanks! Good points and certainly would be a must for pine or other wood. With cedar, finish isn't as critical, but I am finding these different projects with teak oil after the cedar grays out. I've debated on if I should put a video out on it.

Thanks Steve! The back is 90 degrees from the seat but the seat is tilted back slightly. The first sofa I made had a 100ish degree angle which was great. That said I have not noticed this one being a problem at 90 degrees.

if you were to make these and sell them would you still use the pocket holes? really not just for this project but for anything you would make and sell?

It depends on the price point. There is definitely a time and place for pocket holes.

i always felt modern furnishings were more square to save money in production, and seeing how accessible it is to make this crap myself, i am tempted to do this for people as house warming gifts

Thanks for watching and the kind words! The cushions are from IKEA - they have held up reasonably well for the price.

Hey Nathan! Let me just say first of all, thank you for doing this video. I am a total novice when it comes to woodworking, and my first build was this bench (but smaller, and less clean). I wanted to ask though; something that I've struggled to figure out even after watching this video a dozen times is exactly what it is that you're cutting and how you're cutting/measuring when it comes to the relationship between the parts labeled "A" in the rough sketch up and the actual falcon wing pieces. It's hard to tell what exactly is being cut, for what reason, and at what angle both in the video and the sketch up. That said, I really do appreciate this project!

Hey! Can you tell me the time in the video so I can look which piece you mean? Thanks!
@VaultWalter

Sir! Thank you for the quick response. The cuts I had questions about start at around 5:50 and go until about 7:30. I understand what you mean about using the off cut to measure an angle, the part that is confusing is specifically how you're connecting the seat supports to the 2 longest pieces that connect the legs.

I am just gluing and screwing them in. Check from about 10:45. The side ones I screwed into the legs and both stretchers and the middle ones I screwed just into the stretchers where you can't see them. Since I added the slats later that adds a lot of rigidity to the super pieces. If that didn't help let me know.

I think I see where I misspoke; as far as securing the falcon wings to the frame I can definitely do that, the part that keeps tripping me up is at 7:47 and 8:10 specifically when you're cutting the back piece and the horizontal support. At 7:47 you say you're doing one last dry fit - for what are you checking the fit? For what piece to fit where, and how? At 8:10 you say cutting the back piece at the same angle - what angle?

Ah - 745 I am cutting the long support that sits understand your legs when you sit down. It needs the angle so the top seat slats sit flush. 810 is the other long support on the back. It needs an angle so the back slats sit flush on this and the falcon wing supports. At 1045 I am attaching it and you can see how it is flush. Does that help?

Thanks! Yes 2.5" kreg outdoor pocket hole screws.

If you use thinner wood you will need a different length. All Kreg jigs come with a guide though so no guessing.
