What should you do if you find mold in your home? Is it time to freak out? Time to call a professional? Well, the answer, as always, is: "it depends." In this video I explain when you should call a professional vs when you should remediate mold yourself - and if you do decide to remediate it yourself, how do you go about it? There are some products that can help and I have listed them below. Please be sure to leave me a comment and tell me about your experience with mold remediation and how it turned out. Thanks for watching!

I used Morrisons savers disinfectant and it cleared 2 year old black mold instantly. I rubbed it off using a green dish scourer pad. Then dried it with a towel. After that, to stop it returning, I mixed a paste of white distilled vinegar and bicarbonate of soda and painted it on, and left it to dry. But the cause (damp) must be addressed or it will return somewhere nearby. Prevention is better than cure.

Thank you so much for making this video. I have bad mold allergies, your recommendation for concrobrium was great and saying that it was non-toxic gave me relief. Thank you so much again, you provided me with so much value.

Very helpful video! My renovated shower smells like mold. Room is more ventilated than before as an exhaust fan was added. Is there a way I can measure moisture in the tiled walls and tiled shower pan floor?
@DIYwithDave
@DIYwithDave 10 ай бұрын
You can buy moisture meters, but they generally only work in wood and sheetrock. I would first check if it is the drain. That is an easy fix. If the new shower was installed properly, there should be no problems with mold.

@@DIYwithDave I appreciate your response! I’ll get a plumber too though there’s no visible water damage even downstairs below it. They had to tear up the shower pan tile twice to fix the slope so thought maybe the hot mop got damaged or that the walls weren’t properly insulated.

I have treated some wood furniture for mold with vinegar and some window frames. I think the source was a vinyl record collection that had mold on the covers, suddenly it spread to the furniture nearby on the window frames. I have used concobrium on siding but not inside before except for wood floor planks in a small area. Will the vinegar prevent mold from coming back or do I need to use something like in concrobium on it and is that safe for my cats? I read that borax will also kill and prevent mold from coming back. I’m wondering if that would be safer than con chromium however, I don’t even know if the borax would be safe for my cats. I’m just wondering how long after you spray this stuff on, is it still a danger to pets? I also have asthma, and I’m wondering if it’s going to affect me too. Everything is cleaned now pretty much that could be the records for all clean. The covers are thrown away, and the records are in a plastic container now. I have to do the same thing for some books on the bookshelves, the book shelves also had mold on the front and sides of the bookcase. I wonder if I need to use a mold bomb fogger for the there as well since one of the side tables near the couches also had mold on it. I can’t spray anything on the fabric on the couch is because I would be too dangerous I think. There’s no sign of mold on them. Anything that could be thrown away I threw away even if it didn’t have mold on it.

Borax is found naturally in soil and is a needed nutrient by humans. However in large quantities it is deadly, so keep your pets away from it. Use white vinegar on porous surfaces and let it sit. I did repeated sprays full strength, don't mix with water, for 2 days on wood beams. Had to take a wall apart, leaking A/C unit. Then I painted all the wooden 2.4's with mold prevention paint and put new drywall up. You can use and acid or a base to kill mold. Vinegar is an acid, bleach is a base however will not penetrate surfaces so only good on the tub.

My apartment has mostly gray mold all over the walls and ceilings and it was due to me being away from the apartment for a few months. I had my windows closed but had a ceiling fan on but it wasn't on high. I'm located in a very humid area. Will zinsser mold killing primer work getting rid of the mold? I have used vinegar to try to get rid of the mold... spray it on wall and ceiling and wait an hour before scrubbing it with a bristle brush. In the areas with a good amount of gray mold, I was able to remove maybe 50% of it. It would then always come back. However, the big areas with a lot of gray mold which is throughout 2 rooms... I barely removed anything at all. Would this mold killing primer be all I need to remove the mold? So I just paint over the ceilings and walls and that is it? I have a ton of mold in these 2 rooms... apartment is just these 2 rooms. I heard you first need to kill the mold first... so that would mean spray vinegar on every ceiling and wall area with gray mold... then scrub all the areas... and even though the gray mold is still clearly visible... you then wait maybe an hour before you go and paint the wall and ceiling with this? The thing is I have a lot of gray mold throughout the ceiling and wall in one room... the other room it's mostly on the walls. The wall and ceiling is cinderblock or possibly concrete I believe. Can you give advice on this?

I have mold in my bathroom...a lot of it. I sprayed bleach. Straight bleach. It all went away, now I am going to paint with Kilz Mold and Mildew. I had to wait about a day for the bleach to dry. And I would definitely have ventilation and a mask of course. Bleach is STRONG! 😆 🤣 my eyes were burning! but the mold stains are gone.

Wet drywall doesnt necessarily HAVE to be removed. It can be dried in place with the roght equipment which can be rented at lowes and home depot. Drywall will actually be stronger once it gets wet and dries. Yes organic growth can happen but to say it has to be removed just isnt true. Ive been in the emergency restoration industry for many years. Also, microbium is 100% not the best chemical for mold. Get moldx.

Does mold grow between the paint and sheetrock? My bathroom sometimes gets moldy discolorations (not dark in color) and anti-mold cleaners remove it. But I'm wondering if there is still unremoved mold (not just spores) under the paint.
@sheelfjohnson
@sheelfjohnson 2 ай бұрын
Yes it can! Our roof had a leak and it leaked down the wall in the bathroom, and along the ceiling. The only way I knew was that the paint was bubbling up, and when I scraped that off there was mold on the drywall, under the "bubbled" paint. We still need to have that removed but are proscrastinating until we get the roof redone. But if you never had a leak, the mold you're seeing might be all there is. Just watch out for that bubbling.

You completely ignore the problem of condensation as the cause of mold and in my opinion, this is the most frequent underlying cause. It would've been helpful if you had made some suggestions for eliminating condensation as a cause

I guess it depends. With me it is roof leaks around chimneys and pipes. Also water heater leaks even if you think your water heater can't be leaking as it is only five years old.

This is unfortunately not true, especially for porous surfaces. Hydrogen peroxide is a much more effective alternative and is also non-toxic. The higher percentage the better, but the 3% stuff you can get at any general store is fine too. Some things like drywall will always need to be replaced, drywall with mold is never going to be safe to keep no matter how much of whatever cleaner you choose goes on it

But…You can’t see mold spores and mycotoxins in the air, and you absorb them through your skin. 😅 wear PPE Bleach will aggravate the mold mycotoxins and those toxins are the real problem. I don’t think our safety agencies in the US, UK, etc are up to date and/or transparent about mold and the health ramifications right now.
