How to make a perfect journal, with expanding pocket, front pocket, bookmark, elastic band, etc. Great for journaling, sketching, diaries, notes, studying, gift, etc. Inspired by Moleskine brand large notebooks. Finished dimensions: 8.25" by 5".
Another great thing is that it's way cheaper to make this than going out and buying one of these from the store!

May I add a tip I learned on a course? When making a book and cover, try to have the grain of the materials all running in the direction of the spine. How to tell? Hold your paper or card and push inwards, making a U shape. Try in both directions. The way that gives the narrowest U is with the grain, and that should run along the direction of the spine. You feel less resistance from the bend.Why? Because most paper has the fibres running along the grain, so if you go against the grain, they tend to resist creases and folds, and the paper wants to open again. Sometimes you handle a book and feel it's fighting to fan the pages, won't stay open where you put it. That's because it's against the grain, or a mixture! Your text block was probably against the grain, because usually the grain runs with the longest edge of the paper stock ( long grain). If it runs across it's called short grain. So if you take a piece of A4 and fold in half to make your signatures, you are probably going against the grain. Start with A3 and cut it down to what you need. The same applies to board for making the covers.Still, maybe you find it doesn't matter!

Hello KZfaq! I've UPDATED the video to include a new template for making the accordion pocket in the back of your moleskine. Here is the link to the template I made: www.pinterest.com/pin/301459768784690533/ Printing Instructions: IMPORTANT Print out the template horizontally/landscape mode so that it takes up the full 11 inches. If that doesn't work, you'll have to copy and paste the image into a program such as publisher/word and resize it to fit the length of the whole page. Hope this makes things easier everyone! Gabriella Balagna hey, can i do this with more pages than you use? also do you have any suggestions on what the increments should be on a4 sheets?
@GabriellaBalagna
@GabriellaBalagna 9 жыл бұрын
Great questions! Yes, you can add more sheets/pages. (Just add more signatures or make each signature have more sheets of paper.) As far as increments go, just make sure you have the same amount and stay away from the top and bottom edge (as that area gets cut off when you trim your pages). If you need me to be more specific, I can do that, just let me know. I hope your book/journal turns out nice! :)

Excelent! What I didn't get is the dimention of the inner text block. The one you start cutting at 17:16. I can see that its the same size as the black cardboard you cut around 10:15, but what is the folded size? If you know what I mean.
@GabriellaBalagna
@GabriellaBalagna Жыл бұрын
Hi there! The textblock can be trimmed down to the same size as the pocket/end sheet. It needs to fit inside the cover (which is 8.5x5). So the textblock should be 8 x 4.75 inches. In other words, you need to trim 0.25 inches off the top and bottom. And trim 0.75 inches off the side. (Dimensions stated at 17:37.) Thanks!

***** without a corner punch, you could try using a homemade stencil, or just cut the corners at an angle using a utility blade, but i would recommend just leaving the corners unrounded. thank you and feel free to ask if you have any more questions!

Alyshia Eming Hi Alyshia! Sadly, the corner punch was a gift...so I don't know where it was bought from. I'm sure most craft stores (Michaels, Joann's, Hobby Lobby) wold carry one. I looked at it though, and the brand name is "Creative Memories". I've had it for years and used it a ton, and it still works, so it's definitely good quality. I really hope you do get "back into book binding"; it's really fun! :) Have a great day!

UV SAMUEL I checked out the pics on google plus. The journal turned out so awesome. It looks like you used a little lined paper as well. (Too bad there is no way to directly post it on youtube.) The cover fabric is nice and it matches the ribbon! Thanks for sharing. :)

hi there! :) the video shows how to punch the holes at 1:26 there should be 6 holes also, you can totally make this using watercolor paper instead of cardstock!

i really love this project, i will try to make one and it looks easy to make; i needed to make one for my art drawings. Question: What are the increments on the the piercing paper to punch holes? (i really couldn't see them they looked kinda blurry for me)
@GabriellaBalagna
@GabriellaBalagna 9 жыл бұрын
Sorry about that! The increments are in inches as follow: 1.5; 3; 3.5; 5; 5.5; and 7. (The increments should be measured out on a paper that is the same height as the pages of your book or 8.5".) (Sorry it was blurry for you. If you hit the gear shaped button on the video, it will allow you to change the video quality; make sure the video is playing in HD/1080p if you haven't already.) Just leave another comment if you have any more questions I hope this helped! :)

Regular sewing thread will work or you can use embroidery floss. If you use thread, just make sure it's not super thin or it might break when you're trying to sew with it. Have fun!

The cardboard was from an old box. The paper used to cover the cover is from Amazon. Let me know if that answers your question. Thank you!

What are the measurements that you used for the accordion pocket? I couldnt really see them very well.
@GabriellaBalagna
@GabriellaBalagna 9 жыл бұрын
Diana Herrera Sorry about that! Here you go: Start by cutting out a 5.5 by 11 sheet of paper. On the bottom, score 3 three lines (half an inch apart from each other) Score three more lines on the top (half inch apart from each other). On the left, score a half inch line. On the right, score a 3/4 inch line. Then cut out the corners as shown in the video. (Also, turn up the volume, and you'll hear that I narrate the video, giving these measurements.) Now, if you use the metric system, I can't help you there. You'll have to do the math and convert the numbers. lol ;) Just ask me if you have any more questions. Thank you for watching!

Diana Herrera Hi again Diana, I already left you an answer to your comment and then I realized that I had actually already designed a template for the accordion pocket a long time ago. I found the file on my computer, uploaded it, and shared the link with youtube. Here is the link to the template: www.pinterest.com/pin/301459768784690533/ Or, if you don't have a printer/would rather do it by hand, see the other comment I wrote to you. If you do print the template, make sure it prints out in the landscape/horizontal direction, taking up the full 11 inches. Thank you! Enjoy your day. :)

I'm so sorry! I didn't realize the volume was so low. It's becuase the microphone that I use isn't very good and sometimes I forget that you have to turn the volume up to 400% in order for your voice to be heard. I apologize; if you have any questions about the journal making process please leave a comment and I will try to respond quickly.

Gabriella Balagna I played part 2 and it seems a little louder. If you're using a computer, there is also a volume button in the bottom right hand corner of the screen...make sure that volume is turned up to 100% as well. I tried turning it up on my computer and it really helped. Hope this helps!

can you add more than four pages per signature or do you just add more signatures if you want to make a book with more pages?
@GabriellaBalagna
@GabriellaBalagna 9 жыл бұрын
Melody Reyes Great question! Either way would work; so the answer is "yes". You can do as many pages as you can still fold in half (relatively easily) and punch through with your awl (the needlelike tool).Let me know if you need any other questions answered! :)

any paper will work just fine, but remember to keep the direction of the ruled/lined paper going in the direction you want. meaning, depending on which way you fold lined paper, the lines will run either horizontally or vertically.
