Leave a little space at the top of the pole and place a small plastic cup with one drainage hole in it. Fill the cup with water and allow it to slowly drip into the moss. It's a great way to keep the moss damp especially while your away.

how do you make the drainage hole small enough that it slowly releases the water? use like a sowing needle?
@123astbury
@123astbury 2 жыл бұрын
@@PasqualaBear13 I have a small soldering iron that I use but you could could easily use a needle. Just heat it up a little and it will slide in. Poke one hole in the cup and test it with some water. If it's way too slow, poke another hole and so on. You'll figure out how many holes you need with trial and error. You can also use a plastic water bottle. Just poke a hole (approximately 2mm) in the cap, turn it upside down in the moss pole and poke another hole in the base of the bottle. The bigger the hole, the faster it will drip. I hope that helps.

@@PasqualaBear13 I’m unsure how you’ve managed to go out and buy the plant in the first place if your unable to work out how to poke a small hole in a plastic cup. The smaller the hole the slower jt drains. 😂

My jade plants LOVE ugly cheap metal pots that rust. I'm telling you, plants planted in a pretty planter, a nursery pot, and a cheap metal pot that rusts, the cheap metal pot plant will be 3X the size of the others. It never fails. I know people say to put nails in soil so that rust will help (never had any success with that at all) but the cheap metal pots they LOVE THEM. LOVE.

Hi Claire thanks very much for your video. Two days ago I too went to B&Q and although I went for paint became emulsionally involved with a cheese plant that were selling off for all of £2. It is a large plant that needed support hence the moss pole. I have some of the wire mesh that you have used but found an easier and much cheaper alternative. I ended up making my pole from a roll of black plastic gutter guard. The material used to stop leaves blocking roof gutters. Soft and able to cut with scissors, I initially cable tied the mesh to a garden cane, packed with sphagnum moss cable tied together. Love your videos Claire keep up the good work

I am so fortunate to live in a tiny moutain town where people actually come to to get away.Soooooooooooooo I have no need to go anywhere and I love it. I live vacation time 365. Not saying I do not work my butt off living here with my plants and yard and animals. Last time I went away it was coming on fall and cooler weather so I just watered my plants and they were fine until I got home 8 days later. I boarded my dog and had some one coming in caring for my kitties but there was no plant care needed. This was 6 years ago.

Hi! So I have a monstera delociosa and now that it’s going into winter I’ve noticed it needs water more frequently. I’m not sure if it actually needs more water frequently, or maybe just a warm mist humidifier, or if the soil is just old and she needs a repot because it doesn’t seem to be absorbing water as well.

I was gifted a monstera deliciosa for my birthday almost a year ago. She seems to be doing fine, however I did not know anything about moss poles or aerial roots. Now her aerial roots are pretty long, how do I go about putting her aerial roots in the moss pole? Do I just shove them in? She has really thick "elbows" and looks like there maybe 2 parts or plants connected, I'm not sure. I could use some advise. Thank you so much and I love your videos.

I like your mosspoles very much. I'll sure give it a go myself. A few ideas for you to ponder. Using a length of PVC pipe with the diameter you would like your misspole to have, you could wrap your metal mesh around it and literally sow the ends together with some metal wire. When done you can fill the PVC pipe with moss and when it is fully filled use whatever gizmo you can think off that's seems suitable to push the moss out of the pipe making it so your mesh will also slide off the PVC pipe (maybe by closing the bottom of your mesh pipe with thread or mesh) so when you push out the moss it will automatically take the mesh with it. That should leave you with a regularly formed mosspole with excellent structural strength. You can enlarge the structural strength of your pole by threading some nylon fishing wire through your pol, making sure to "knot" your fishing wire on the mesh. By creating tension wires like this, your moss pole will have greater structural strength and not bend awkwardly. In that manner you can make really huge moss poles. Also, when your plant gets really big it might become top heavy, with all the light substrate these plants growe min. You might aleviate that by putting some pebble rocks in the bottom of your containers. Just a thought. You have one new subscriber 🙂

How have the plants fared with the wire mesh poles? The mesh used in fencing and sold in diy stores is sometimes advertised (incorrectly) as stainless steel. It is in fact galvanised and after even handling it briefly you will notice zinc rubbing off onto your hands. I believe high levels of zinc are toxic to plants so I was curious about the results of using these with mesh poles long term

If the cut sides of the wire cut the plants or anything, can't black or silver duck tape be put on the sides(depending on the color of wire) to prevent this from happening.
