Pretty cool video. Like you, I've built batteries from raw cells, used repurposed cells for various needs, and also purchased complete LiFePO4 batteries. There is a place for each of these, for sure. Something you demonstrated, but didn't mention specifically, is the sense of satisfaction one can get from any kind of DIY project. This is particularly true when you build or repurpose a 2nd-life battery to fit a unique situation. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on all of this stuff.

Diy Lifepo4 new batteries are the best way to go for long term solar storage period. You can beat the price but at the cost of reduced life cycles. I found used Lifepo4 packs for $100kwh in the US but it's on the east coast and the shipping is very expensive to get to me on the Westcoast so buying raw cells from. China is a better price overall

Brother I think its a no brainer on eg4 ... U can't get that warranty diy I understand some thinks its cheaper to diy but really it isn't... Its just u get the satisfied that u built a battery .....The big bang for ur buck is a server rack batteries if ur wanting to run a house. Or diy ur own for fun.... Keep it up brother

I will be checking more of your vids. However like the young lady said slower with more detail less head in the way would be much appreciated. Generally great and thanks very much.

on the bench top power supplys if you use higher gauge wires directly to the connections you can get the full rated amps out of the unit even down to 3.6v if you wanted to parral top balance

Maybe you should try a JK BMS with a 2A balancing current. I'm very satisfied with that. Especially when you have not very similar cells

Lead acid batt, if lightly used and properly charge, can last 10-12y but that’s more of the exception. Pb batt tend to last 6-9y under various “normal” use (automotive)

I posted a link to the JBD app I use, you probably have to approve it. BTW have you noticed any appreciable difference between 1c, and 0.2c capacity tests? I have not, and thus just go for 1c test. I'm starting to think the whole 0.2c standard test is just leftover practice from lead acid.

These days? Rack mount LifePo4 batteries are the way to go. Lot of good product entering the market with 5-14.4 Kwh plug and play units. Have their own bms, circuit breakers, communications, readouts, cell diagnostics and some are even heated. You cannot build anything for cheaper now.

040122/1426h PST 🇺🇸 Hello Beene thank you for the demo. I too am a proponent of using B cells, as they have enough punch and lasts a long time. I also appreciate your sentiments regarding sellers of batteries. Of course, you know, that they do not manufacture those batteries but assemble parts bought from the East and sell them with funny trade names and profits. I’m not too keen on ‘compressing’ the cells though, as I feel there’s no effect on doing that. I have similar cell arrangement for the past 4 years without ‘compression’ and cells have not bulged a bit. Perhaps this is because, settings in VICTRON PV charge controller is set to LiFePo4 as Absorption 14.20V / Float 13.50V / Storage 13.50V. JBD is my BMS and all the cells are balanced approximately @ 3.36V with delta of 0.002~3. Battery voltage at rest is 13.45V 97%. (12.8V configuration with no external active balancer) The above system has been running exactly like this for over 4 years. During winter, when shadow falls on the PV cells, I use VICTRON charger IP22 and IP 67 on ‘night mode’ condition. Charger shuts off during daylight. Once again thanks for the presentation, which’s well designed and neat.

Just not sure about 48V myself, when yoo got 20kWp on the roof .. sounds like one would end up with giant cables for insane amperage. Or so many inverters and all that it starts becoming a bit messy. Also, with 48V, the batteries might be cheap, but the bigger inverters usually cost a lot more than say a 10kWp Huawei HV system etc. And I wonder about losses. (PS: That doesn't mean I suggest people start to do DIY HV Systems .. :P for obvious reasons).

Uncontested and disputed. DIY is the most bang for the bucks. Can plug and play beat the diy battery with case, bms, 300AH 48v 15khw+ capacity for $1600? for that price plug play will buy you 100AH battery for about 5kwh. Are you sure you ask? absolutely positively because i already sourced them out ready to buy. Hint!!!! you are not going to find the components in the US and only in Asia. Then again there is only one country in the world that is leading for now and making LFP battery by the ton - China so now you know where i source to build my battery. I am NO newbie in this solar thing. I had been doing for more than 5 years already starting out from scratch build and set up everything myself - battery, solar panel, inverter. The off grid 3kw inverter that runs the whole house and still works to this day. 100% off grid. Nowadays there are abundant info. for diy in compare with years ago so what are u waiting for?????? Seriously NO body should do grid tie as off grid is becoming very feasible and affordable. I went cold feet off grid and never regretted. 99% of the population won't do that!!!!!!!!

I have a lot of 1/0 aluminum wire rated for 125 amps should I use this or get copper? I'm building a pack that will have a 100 amp breaker and switch hooked to solar. Normal charge/discharge of current batteries are 40-50 amp max usually 20-35. I think I will use your design if you don't mind it looks like a pretty good one

Good vid, Sub’d. Have you thought about recycling ur discharge via a charger/method to another set of discharged batteries, rather than just burning off the power to a heating element? Andy (Off Grid Garage Australia) has a Tesla, which is a cool way for dumping any extra power for his high Amp tests & still using/recycling the power for EV. Cheers

careful with that battery disconnect switch on a 51.2v battery... it's not rated for that voltage. not even the high quality Bluesea Systems ones are rated that high and that's a cheap knockoff!

You know, I would love to learn more about the things you do, but honestly, your videos aren't very beginner friendly. You throw out a lot of terms, I'm unfamiliar with; you don't explain the steps of what you're doing as you do it; you go too fast; and don't mute the noise from the power tools you are using, while you are talking... Makes it hard to understand. Also, that shot with your head in the way made it hard to see what you were doing. So, please, can you make this a little more user friendly, so an eccentric DIYer from Ohio can build her own solar system???
