How to make a patio heater from empty gas/propane tanks.
First of all DO NOT cut into a gas/propane tank unless you know what you are doing! Even though the tank may appear empty there is a risk of explosion and fire. The tanks I used were empty and had their valves removed. They were then filled with water to remove any remaining gas, emptied then refilled again to be sure. The tanks were then left in the open air for a few weeks to vent before being used. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
FYI : It has since been brought to my attention that it may be frowned upon to cut open or modify a gas/propane cylinders in some parts of the world! Be sure to check and follow your local rules and regulations.
Here are some of the many KZfaq tutorials I watched before attempting it:
• degassing used cylinders
• How To Remove A Valve ...
• How to Open a Propane ...
• how I clean a propane ...
All I had to purchase for this project was the 4 inch(100mm) steel tube for the chimney part. It cost €12. The hinge nuts and bolts and the high temperature I already had. I reckon it would have cost about €20 if i had to purchase them.
It is a fairly easy project to do but there is a lot of cutting grinding and sanding. I decided to burn the paint off the cylinder as it was difficult the get it off with the grinder. Thanks for watching !

These can look great on a patio and a good way of reusing something, I think however they do need a grate being a wood fire and a flat plate on top for a kettle or frying pan , they make a great BBQ as well. Some of the designs are astonishing.

You can use J-B Weld high temp(I did on the chimney on the one I built),and to connect the 2 tanks together use a short pipe nipple the right size. No welding required.

Great channel Eamon, thank you. I am also am mad into making stuff, lucky can also weld and fabricate and have a good work shop. Can you advise please, I am starting a project based upon (inspired) by your video using a 47 kg tank. Have had for many years and left valve open to get rid of as much fumes as possible. Do you happen to know if they come off anti clock wise or clockwise? Want to purge with water just to be on safe side before I start fabricating.
@EamonWalshDIY
@EamonWalshDIY 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Martin, thank you. If I remember correctly it was anti clockwise to open and it was extremely tight. They definitely need to be purged. I filled them with water to remove any remaining gas, emptied then refilled again. I then left them outside open air for a few weeks to vent before being used.

Does anyone know how to use a propane patio heater as a propane fire pit to take camping? I have a patio heater just sitting around with zero use and I need a propane fire pit to go camping...so confusing how to repurpose this heater into a fire pit.

Hi Ted, Its holding up great. I give it a coat of heat resistant paint once or twice a year. I use it on a concrete patio but I have used it on grass before and it did not scorch the grass.

Can i ask - do you get much smoke escape from the door? i built one of these with a larger tank - same door as yours but smoke comes out or fire smoulders when door closed - do you think bigger(wider pipe needed?) or taller pipe? im using a sacf holding pipe as the chimney flue. Thanks man - yours looks class!
@EamonWalshDIY
@EamonWalshDIY 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Jay, thanks. I only get a little after lighting it. When it heats up and the fire gets going it stops. I used a 4 inch pipe on mine I wouldn't use anything smaller than that. It may also be an air intake problem, you could start by drilling a few holes on the side or bottom to see if that helps.
@DaddyBear3000
@DaddyBear3000 6 жыл бұрын
Sounds like the fire is being starved of oxygen. If the wood isn’t seasoned it will smoke more and kill the fire itself and likewise if the breather holes are too small.

Eamon Walsh DIY hey Eamon, it’s getting that time of year in Ireland to fire these up and I was wondering where you bought your steel pipe from? Iv tried to find locals here in cork at steel merchants and they are mental money 50-70€ per meter just wondering where you bought yours for €12? Thanks.

I agree this is a cool Idea. But as a person that burns wood a lot. This thing needs some addition to get 2 thumbs up. #1 if you could add a tray that regulated Air intake and #2 doubles as Ash collection, this would be right on. I’m telling you getting the ash out of this thing is gonna be a pain every time. Adding a latch to the door handle is a must. This way if a log falls over inside the fire it can’t fall out and onto your floor
