I love how when you make mistakes you show us how to fix them. It makes us feel more confident when we mess up because we know things aren't always perfect and you have shown us how to fix it already. Thank you.

I made my own peacoat! This isn't the easiest item to make, so to keep it simple I didn't include the lining or collar on purpose. Someday when I'm feeling ready we'll go through the whole deal :) Until then, stay warm!

If you were to line this with silk or flannel, would you basically just make a copy of the pattern in that fabric and attach it in the inside? I love the pattern!

No pockets? I think I would definitely add pockets and a lining. And a collar to turn up in the wind. A slippery lining (like satin) helps to slide your arms into the sleeves especially when you wear a sweater or something- the sweater and woolly coat fabric won't slide against eachother because they both have so much texture.

She addressed them at the end of the video. If you wanna add pockets, she has a link below for a guide on how to sew them onto the coat. As for lining, she talks about it in her comment.

Hey, Wendy, this is a great tutorial! I have a suggestion regarding the sleeves, though. With set in sleeves like this, you might consider sewing down the side seams of both the body and the sleeve, then turning the body inside out and slipping the sleeve inside to sew it on. The reason for this is that it will allow you to ease in the extra length on the curved part of the sleeve, which allows for more ease of movement in your shoulders when you wear it. It also allows the seam to sit a little flatter in the armpit, which is a little more comfortable in my opinion. I didn't do this for the longest time, but I really do find that it makes my sleeves much more comfortable (especially in commercial patterns, but in my self-drafted patterns as well). It does make sewing in the sleeve a little more fiddly, but I've found it worth the trouble.

+Alchemilla Channelwood I appreciate that! I knew that was the more conventional way to do it too, but I always found it made tutorials seem much more complex. Thank you for telling me it's worth it!

a month ago I followed a tutorial to make a cape and it turned out pretty awesome so this month I want to take it to the next step and make a coat AND GOD I love this video, for someone as ignorant as me when it comes to this, it's just so helpful and awesome!!!!!! I love the clarity in the instructions v=because every other video made it sound like rocket science and that would immediately make me believe there's no hope for me to recreate it. just one thing, I don't understand how you used a jacket as a pattern like I've never seen anyone do it so It would've been cooler if you included that detail in the video. everything else is just perfect! thank you so much for doing this. YOU JUST EARNED A TOP FAN

Thank you so so much for this tutorial! I'm a plus sized being, so it's extremely difficult for me to find anything that actually has a nice style and that doesn't cost more than an average sized article of clothing. DIYing helps me out so much because not only can I make things in my size, but I can also make them with the frills and designs that I feel comfortable with and don't feel frumpy in. =) Finding coats, especially peacoats, has been the most difficult kind of clothing to find in a price range I can afford; and for that reason I still don't have one. But I'm really excited to be inspired to make one because I never really even considered it since it seemed so difficult! So thank you so much for this tutorial. All of your tutorials are so, so helpful!!

You had excess material on the sleeve because it is meant to be set in. There is in average about 1/2" to 2" of ease built into a sleeve cap to allow for the mobility of the shoulder socket. Your sleeve installation method varies depending on the type of garment (amount of ease). I love the action/t-shirt method of installing a sleeve that you used but it isn't really meant for all sleeve types. I suspect you will feel more restricted in the shoulders when wearing this coat vs the original. See attached: www2.ca.uky.edu/agcomm/pubs/fcs2/fcs2807/fcs2807.pdf
