That's great. . . . But also That's one crazy heavy duty pallett!!! Unfortunately I doubt I could do that with the ones I find near me 😅 they only have the tons of planks on one side, and then the bottom side has only 3 reinforcing planks.

Perhaps try to find a local pallet factory. They sometimes have a pile of discarded pallets that they might let you take. Otherwise theres always the option of using more than one pallet.

Great work, the best and simplest way I've seen so far. I'm doing exactly the same right now, but before I start putting together the pieces I have one (maybe stupid) question: why don't you attach the side cuts to front and rear in order to maintain the equal lenght of those for the bottom? I have got just a multitool, so in my case the less cutting, less work and less error. Maybe it could affect the structure or something? Maybe it doesn't really matter? Anyways, thanks for the great video 👍
@nedimdza38113 ай бұрын
Also, in addition to your fantastic build I'm going to wrap the inside with plastic, add a thin layer of expanded clay and a drainage hose just below the clay level. That was an advice from a friend, supposedly it retains the moisture and all the excessive water goes down so the roots won't get soaked. Will see how it works...

What is the narrow box for along the front? I LOVE the build!! Best I've seen ESPECIALLY since you included measurements :)
@ourkilkennyhomestead200610 ай бұрын
Hello Diane and thank you for your kind words. The box on the front is not really for anything specific but will fit seedling pots nicely or something similar.

Love the video. Assuming one would line the box with landscaping fabric...or is there tomething better? Any idea how long will the wood last with soil in it?
@ourkilkennyhomestead20065 ай бұрын
Hello pat, untreated the wood will begin to fail after 2yrs based on personal experience. I use ronseal fence life on most projects which has kept wood solid for me anyway for 4yrs now and counting.

Thank you for your design. You K.I.S.S.ed it! Other than the screws, this was a free build! Curious as to why you didn’t add drainage holes. Is that because the bottom boards weren't that tight/board imperfections? I'm keeping this video!😊😊😊
@ourkilkennyhomestead20064 ай бұрын
Thank you so much for your kind words. Yes you are spot on, there were small gaps in the wood that were just right for sufficient drainage without the compost washing out too. If the boards were a tight fit then drainage holes would definately have to be made.
@josepha4269 ай бұрын
Can you post the exact measurements for cutting the pieces?
@ourkilkennyhomestead20069 ай бұрын
Hello, the instructions are designed to be universal as pallets come in a wide variety of sizes. If I give the specific measurements that the pallet in the video was cut to, they may not be correct for the pallet that you get to make your own. Thanks for watching.

Hello possibly a stupid question but if the boxes have the short planks on the inside of the long planks, then surely when I put the 4 long planks on the bottom later on, they will be slightly too long... did you have to trim your 4 planks to make them fit? As the length of the sides internally is reduced, by the width of the short planks (maybe only a few centimetres). Hope this makes sense! Cheers for your video though, I still plan to try and follow this!
@ourkilkennyhomestead20062 ай бұрын
Yes if you're fitting them internally from a set of planks equal in length then you will have to shorten them by the width of each end wall which was 18mm per wall in the case of this build.
@procs2 ай бұрын
@@ourkilkennyhomestead2006 OK cheers that makes sense. Do you reckon you could get away with just 3 on the bottom by the way, with spaces in between instead of 4 next to each other, or would the gaps be too big? (I intend to line mine with some kind of empty compost bag, or similar..)
@ourkilkennyhomestead20062 ай бұрын
@@procs no probs, don't think you'll get away with removing one bottom plank as the gaps would be around 2-3cm and the soil would fall through. It could be done however if you fitted a porous liner of some sort inside the box.
@proc53152 ай бұрын
Can you think of any downside of screwing the sides on the other way around? So the small sides are on the outside, rather than in between the front/rear? Would save having to saw the longer ones slightly to length?@@ourkilkennyhomestead2006

I was looking for this comment. I just built one very similar to this without the 4 long planks covering the whole bottom. Instead, I installed the 3 support beams and stapled very narrow holed chicken wire to the bottom and added some weed barrier on top of that. Drainage issue fixed.
