DIY plywood shelves using plywood. In this video tutorial, I will show you how to build simple plywood shelf using a kreg jig for pocket hole joinery. This is such a fast easy project for making your own shelves. The skill level required to make these shelves would be for a beginner. This is a great beginner woodworker project. I am using 3/4" sanded birch plywood to build these shelves. Using 3/4" plywood makes a strong shelf that will last a long time. Pocket hole joinery with the Kreg K5 makes a strong joint as well. Give this project a try and let me know what you think!
Tools and supplies used in this build:
Kreg K5 Pocket Hole Jig: amzn.to/2sv9VCr

Man, I enjoy watching all your vids, they’ve helped me in so many ways. I saw a pic of your Cross bench and plan on duplicating it to donate to the church that lost 5 children in that horrible accident here recently. That’s my hometown and our community is devastated by it. I plan on building 5, 1 for each child with their names on it to create a memorial for them.

A tip I use for brad nailing is the brads usually shoot out to the left or right. If you position the nail gun sideways they most likely go into the wood and not shoot out the sides. Hope that makes sense.

I appreciate the video. But I would like some help figuring out the depth of the pocket holes and the length of the screws when doing this type of joint. You skipped over that completely. Do I set the stop collar to 3/4" on the bit and use a 1 1/4" screw since that's less than 1.5"? I've seen where the pocket is much hight up the board and using a longer screw. I get confused with this. I want to attach a 3/4" top to a 1x3 apron. Do I always use the smallest thickness for both the stop collar and the depth adjustment gauge on the jig?

I have a question (no expert by any stretch of imagination) but would doing pocket holes like this with the screws angling upwards be a weaker option than having the pockets on the top with the screws angling down? After all the loading on the shelf would be on the top surface and having the screws pointed down should in theory reinforce the joint. Or am I over thinking it?

Very nice shelves, I see what you mean about the ply. It was a shame to cut it up. I have a question about when you screwed in the pocket hole screws in the shelf. I saw you clamp the the outside screws to hold the shelf and then just screwed the inner two without anything. I did the exact same thing joining two pieces of melamine and when i screwed in the inner screws the board moved and slightly bowed the board. Can you tell me what you do to combat this please?

Really solid video - I subscribed and look forward to watching more in the future. I am making an exterior bat rack for my son’s HS baseball team (w/ 3/4” MDO) and wanted to see how far apart you spaced your pocket screws on the shelves (mine are only 12” wide, so I went with three after watching). I also am using some white oak as banding for the frame, and I was curious what sizes brads/nails you used to attach them to the plywood. Thanks in advance.

Curious as to why you chose to do the pocket holes on the top side of the very top shelf that is most visible? The bottom two shelves are underneath like you would assume. I've also seen guys pole saw off the pocket hole fillers for a more precise fit/finish. Quality build though! Also, I'm going to look into that rip fence. I've ordered two off amazon that won't fit my ryobi corded circular saw now and I'm thinking this may be just what I need. Love that it extends to 24" as well.

O and if you made the shelves 3 ft 3 instead of the randomly selected 3 foot, to allow for the rope to be set in a little from the edges of the shelves. You struggle with your microphone. It will, at some point destroy your camera or cause an accident. In order to save money, I would suggest plugging it into your phone. Yes, just record your sound separately into an Android or iPhone sound recording application and then synchronize video from camera and sound from the phone in post production. This way, you don't have to drag a long cable with you and leave it hanging. You can even leave the camera and go walking for miles and the sound will keep recording without any problems.

Thank you, I have since bought a camera mounted mic and it is much more convenient. The sound just isn't quite as good.

Yes, it is an option as well. But once you go into professional equipment and cameras with pro XLR 3 pin connectors and VHF radio microphones, it becomes very expensive. Recording whatever mic you already had separately on your phone would be so much cheaper and the sound quality will be very, very good. I mean, nobody really knows how your voice sounds like in real life, so even if in all the recordings it's a bit lower or higher, nobody will notice as long as it is clear and free of crackling, rustling and wind sounds, which is easy to filter.

Nice work, just a suggestion, do less talking in your videos and speed things up a bit. Thanks!
