Part of the problem is that bass waves are "bigger" than higher frequencies so cutting off the top would actually help, or at least removing the acoustical foam. Remember that being in front of the box during recording also blocks sound pressure and contributes to the boxy effect. Experiment with the distance you are from the mic, and you may also find that that will help.

With Sound Booth 5:29 Without Sound Booth 5:50 *NEW* Some people have commented the audio sounds a little boomy (bass heavy in the box). I tried to add some EQ and high pass filter in this video to try and make it sound better. Check it out here >> kzfaq.info/get/bejne/osedda6jktvKeXU.html

Humorously, whenever people ask me how to best do cheap ADR, I send them a link to this video. I find that creating the DIY box works better than just about anything and, with the use of headphones, can make recording ADR so much easier. Great job, and you probably have no idea how many people you've instructed in recording better audio.

I found this music maker jam software on my new computer I just got. I started using that software and made music. I uploaded my song I made on Soundcloud. There was people rapping on the songs I made that wasn't me, and people was telling me I should rap the songs that I made. But I said I couldn't because the noise that my computer makes when I try to make songs on Audacity. So some people told me I should use soundproof walls, I said they were too high. So I tried to find a video that I could find a cheaper way to get these things, so I found this video. Thanks to him, calculated the things that I need and its only $30 total. Thanks Joe.

Its always possible to use other methods and often cheaper to achieve the same thing. I'm not a talented DIY maker, but I could buy the $300 off the shelve version, but using bit of research, thinking and bit of effort - I managed to create this box for a lot less money and probably 90% of the same effect as the expensive one. Hope you have a successful recording with the new soundbooth bro. Have a good day!

Brilliant video. I happened to have an ikea box sitting in my office, and some egg crate foam in the garage. I had a "box" like your built within 5 minutes of watching your video, and got similar stellar results (also using a Blue Yeti.) If you don't have a pop filter, you can also just drape a t-shirt over the front of the box, and it'll cut your pops and hisses. For those making this, a utility knife also works great to cut the foam if you don't have a bread knife. I think I agree that there's a lot more bass that comes with this solution. I can see times where that's a fit and times where it isn't. I also found, that even with this on my desk, my laptop hard drive and fan (running Audacity) were still giving enough vibration that my mic was picking it up. Had to leave them on a separate table. I found that putting my script on a stand behind the box worked well, as I could still reach and see it, but it kept me facing the mic. Thanks again for the shared ingenuity.

The testing was very well done ! It helped convince me of the potential of such a build. I intend to record book readings for a local audio librabry project (for people unable to read) and I will probably build a similar device ! :-) However, I would recommend the video from diy perks about the comparative performances of various cheap sound insulating materials. It appears that stacked towels (shower towels that is) are hugely better than usual insulating foam. So I think I'll build a similar booth, only with towels from the local charity store instead of foam.

I found a link to your video on Amazon while considering the purchase of the ridiculously under-priced Blue Yeti microphone with built-in A/D converter to make it USB compatible. I'm listening at 6:00 AM through a pair of Etymotic Research earbuds, which reveal very subtle differences in sound quality. In terms of relating to your voice and image in this video over all, I slightly prefer the sound of your lavaliere mic, even though it is much noisier, because in the right location the ambience contextualizes your presentation for me, and perhaps because you are just more relaxed when you're not facing the mic. Of course, one doesn't always want that much audio information in a recording or even a conversation. The portable soundbooth you created is brilliant. Not to state the obvious, but it might be better if you raised it up so you wouldn't have to lean forward and down to use it. I would love to hear a sample clip with your mouth at various distances from the mic (including much closer to the pop filter, almost touching it) for comparison's sake. You have a wonderful, confident and reassuring voice. When I was your age, I did a couple of commercials and some voice-over for local TV and radio stations, and I can say with confidence that you've got the goods if you ever want to go that route. You probably won't get paid for it (at least at first), but it's quite fun. Thank you for showing me and your 70,000 other viewers how to construct an inexpensive and portable sound booth. I truly appreciate it.

Mark Hubbard Hi Mark. First of all, thank you for watching my video and leaving me a nice constructive, interesting message. The lav mic is very noisy and the cable is really long which makes it annoying to use, but mainly the noise from the lav mic really puts me off personally hence why I wanted to explore the sound booth and the purchase of the Yeti mic in the first place but then I found that the Yeti would pick up lots of background sound (not from the mic itself). I would like to do more comparison if I had the time, but unfortunately at the moment video production has been slow due to real-life work commitments. I'm shocked that you think my voice is suitable for VO stuff, I personally find my voice rather annoying and strange even though I have to listen to it day in and out when I'm editing my own videos lol. Thank you again for your feedback.

Actually, when the mic is out of the box the voice sounds more natural. Into the box the voice has a lot of bass which is not natural at all. The buzz noise from the computer can be completely removed if you put a towel under the mic.
@JoeLamOfficial
@JoeLamOfficial 8 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the tip, it is possible to tweak the recording in post to remove some of the bass though. Depends if you or the user prefers to have a bass-heavier sound. But you are right, it sounds more balanced when its not inside the box, or if you used a bigger box. Thanks for watching and the tip!

Most the high frequency when recording outside is reflected. When you are in the sound booth, the high frequency are no longer reflected which gives it the appearance of having more bass.

Great hardware hack :). As a recording and mixing engineer I can only recommend this to everyone who wants to get great recordings in locations that have little accoustic treatment. The important thing here is that the voice you're recording has to be directed in to the accoustic space the box is creating. The microphone is picking up everything the box isn't swallowing up(which isn't everything), so the user needs to direct as little evergy as possible in to the room, because some of that will make it back to the microphone via reflectation and diffusion. If any of you are noticing resonances (frequencies being boosted highly or almost dispearing), add a layer of accoustic foam to the sides and top, perhaps even the bottom. The thicker the accoustic material is, the lower the frequency it can absorb. That is the reason accoustic panels in studios are thick, or corner absorbers are such a fat chunk of material, because they're meant to absorb even very low frequencies. And don't forget you can place accoustic foam panels in a V-shape outward from your box too if you want a little more distance. Thanks for demonstrating this great build. I'll be sure to send any podcasting and VO folks this way that sound. Now I'm pondering how to put this whole thing on a mic stand. Maybe a 2-3cm hole in the back to poke the stand through, or just holes in the upper back corners to strap the whole box through the pole.
@JoeLamOfficial
@JoeLamOfficial 10 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your nice comments and tips. I really appreciate this. I might try and add some more layers of foam to the side. But wouldn't the thick layers of acoustic foam make the sound really tight like in a very enclosed space cause the box is getting smaller?
@AironExTv
@AironExTv 10 жыл бұрын
***** Not at all. Absorbers dampen reflections. For a boxy sound you'd need something that reflects the sound to some degree. The box is covered with accoustic foam which should be good down to 200-400 Hz, judging by its thickness. The biggest problems when recording in rooms are the lowest frequencies, and that's what you can get rid of by getting thick absorbers. It's always a good idea to check the absorption coeefficients of the material you're using. Many folks make the mistake of using incredible amounts of absorbers to simply absorb the everything but the low mids and low end, but those are routinely the biggest problems of small rooms. Thus, a double layer of absorbtion around your box will hopefully give you a low end that is under marginal influence by the room you're standing in. I've often recorded with larger (self built) absorbers being attached to a wall of plywood that I could roll around and position carefully. It helps to have your mics audio in headphones while doing this. I often position those in a V shap behind the artist if necessary. Corning 705 panels are a good candidate for that and they're not expensive, but have to be wrapped in a breathing fabric. And at some point people then build little vocal booths. For most commentary VO purposes a small bit of room information is ok though. It's always by ear, not by numbers.
@JoeLamOfficial
@JoeLamOfficial 10 жыл бұрын
Airon Extelevision Thanks for the tips. So you reckon more acoustic foam will actually remove the bass heavy sound from my voice? Cause its sounds a bit muffled at the moment when its inside the box compared to being outside. But outside the DIY booth, picks up too much vibration from the desk/HDD etc.
@AironExTv
@AironExTv 10 жыл бұрын
***** That muffled sound is the exact problem of using absorbing too much of the mid and high end. It's the reason hanging heavy curtains does the same thing in smaller spaces, which most apartment rooms are. If you have some of that foam left, just place it around the box, on top and below it. The combined thickness will probably give you better results.

What are your tips for using this? I made the box exactly the same way but it sounds really bassy. Where should the mic be and where should I talk from?
@JoeLamOfficial
@JoeLamOfficial 8 жыл бұрын
That's one side effect for using a small box. using a larger box, speaking slightly further away from the mic and tweaking the EQ audio with software can reduce some of the bass, also depends what mic you are using as well. Some mics are naturally more bassy.

@JoeLamOfficial
@JoeLamOfficial 8 жыл бұрын
Hamaji Neo Only way is to speak less close to the mic and if that doesn't help, use software (EQ) to lower the bass in your recording if the mic itself is very bass heavy. The box does emphasise this even more being in a compact space. There's not too much room for the sound to escape to.

What is the application? Is it live voice, voice over (I am guessing not since they like it bassy) or music? If it is music, I always roll off 100hz to 150hz, gone, cya, out of there. So I will roll off guitars at 120 then the vocal at 110 or 130, depends on the singer and such. But 100 to 150 on down, can be gone. If your box has to be this size, this box is pretty dang small. Put your mic all the way back, mount a pop filter to the box, and get some more distance. Or, if you can't do the above, add some bass ports in it. They are dirt cheap to buy, or you can make them out of pvc. Bass ports on a small box will do wonders. Or use a much bigger box. More distance with a pop filter. Roll off 100 to 150hz on EQ, and sometimes I like to boost it right before the roll off.

+Media6D Haha, I never would have thought of it, at least not like that. I had some foam insulation left over from a shed build, and just used that. Its not high grade audiophile grade foam, but I figured it would get rid of the reverb and focus the sound. It sure did! Its not as pretty either, but I have a lid that went with it. Same Ikea-style box you used. i.imgur.com/lz4R49E.jpg My before and after was night and day.

Wonderful. I would suggest hanging an audio blanket behind you when you record because otherwise you still get and undesirable level of reverb. Wish I would have seen this before I made a cumbersome cube out of PVC and drilled holes on a small table to bolt the PVC tubes on it, not to mention the sand bag to keep it from tipping over. Jeeez!

+squeezemypimple thanks for the support. I do agree with the comments though, it does boost the bass quite a bit especially with the Yeti mic where its' already very bass heavy like podcast / radio style. But it helped to remove the background noises in my room. So I don't mind - also its something that can be easily fixed with some EQ in post edit.
