DIY Pressure Test Natural Gas Lines Cheaply w/ Tire Inflator

My gas lines wouldn't pass a pressure test with the gas company so I took it into my own hands to figure out where the leak is using an inexpensive tire inflator with pressure gauge tool from harbor freight and a 1/2" to 1/4" pipe thread reducer

Couple points! Pressure testing isn't very costly to have professional do it. Most natural gas appliances, furnace, etc,pressures will only be around 5 to 10 psi. You really need to disconnect appliances etc as to not damage valves and diaphragms that aren't designed for 20 or 30 psi. Also black iron pipe,or flexible stainless would be best type of pipe in my opinion. Gas piping is no joke and doing it improperly could cost lives literally. Kudos for Diy video and trying to help others save a few bucks, But......

Same thing I did. BUT valve out all equipment that runs off your gas line. If you test above 1psi you can riun controls on your systems. If all your lines pass then keep your equipment valved out but test your i.e.furnace at the dirt leg keeping it at our below 1psi.

I would use caution on 30 psi. You're going to wreck your supply valves. And the big one is that if you feed that amount of pressure back into the meter you'll ruin it. Most domestic meters have a MAOP OF 5psi.

@@pocketdiy I wouldn't cross over 5 PSI. First the residential meter typically has a maximum allowable operation pressure of 5PSI. Pass that and you can ruin the meter. When I look for leaks I keep it around 3PSI.

I think the test port you need to connect for testing should be outside the house, this way, if that test port itself ever leaks (since it's the final connection) you will never leak gas into the house.

Galvanized pipe can flake and clog your gas valve, that's why the black is used. I heard the propane in the line was set at 2 pounds pressure from the regulator. The gas company should be able to tell you what the pressure is. wrap the tape 8 times around it goes on easer and is less likely to ever leak or get the stuff in the can. you cant put it on too thick or tighten it to much. lug nuts are tightened from 150 to 300 pounds you should know how that feels.. 2 pounds of gas cant squeeze out past that. that little bitty leak would never blow you up . it you put a torch on it, it might over time burn your glue but your house would have to be prey engulfed in fames already to cause problems with that gas line.

Boy, you sure don't know anything about lug nuts. If you were to tighten cars wheels to that spec look out because the lugs will break somewhere down the road. The Alcoa 22.5" wheels on my 36 foot motorhome are torqued to 300 Ft. Lbs.

Thread tape is the way to go. The oatey pipe thread compound works. Looks like the person who plumbed that cross threaded that valve. That much gas leaking down into a basement over time can create a big explosive type problem as gas is heavier than air and will settle in that basement. Same thing happened to school in TX and killed everyone in it when it went bang, that’s the event that caused the adding the odor to the gas that we all know so well

To do this right, use a hand pump. You need a gauge that measures ounces (not pounds). It has to hold 10 oz/in. Do not use an air compressor! This video should be removed or edited

That sounds right. I am thinking multiple pounds of gas pressure could fry one's furnace gas valves, as well as the ones on the range and the hot water heater {and any other gas appliance such as a dryer if used}. In use pressure is supposed to be around 1/2 pound and testing needs to be higher, I understand about 2 or 3 pounds. I'm planning to test mine and may use a higher pressure but will remove all appliances and put the appropriate caps on the lines. I will not have to worry about the gas meter as my gas is already turned off and the gas company will bring the meter back when they pass me for turn on. With no appliances on completely isolated with caps, I bet you could test that iron pipe with 30, or 60 pounds. Probably 5 pounds at best if one only isolates the appliances by turning their toggle switch valves off without disconnection and cap. I would love to know if any electric gas valves {hundreds of dollars to replace} failed as a result of this testing.

Thanks, great channel. There's a lot of pro's online here foaming at the mouth about hating DIY'ers, but truth be known, it was probably a professional that installed that connection you found leaking! But, of course, it's very important for DIY'ers to do your homework, use the right pressure for testing. PS. Gas plumbing is kind of a joke.. I mean, there isn't a specific torque required or specified for connecting pipes. Best advice I could find anywhere was tighten as hard as you can with a 6" wrench. LoL. Suffice to say, use the right black pipe, tighten with the correct dope sealant (more of a lubricant as some describe it) and test with very little pressure, if the output from the gas meter is 1psi, then 3psi is the most you should go, just wait a nice long time and if you have leaks, start redoing the connections you made then move on to the connections by the "professionals". Not to bash the professionals, but even they make mistakes.

@@francistafaro3 (United States) The gas pressure out by the street varies, but is around 60 lbs. Residential (house) gas pressure is less than one pound going through the regulator/meter (safety). Every gas appliance (water heater, range, dryer, furnace, etc.) has its own secondary regulator (safety). When testing a house using higher pressure you MUST disconnect each appliance and temporarily cap it or you'll possibly (probably) damage each secondary (more delicate) regulator, designed for regulating only a fraction of a single pound. Most of the gas shut-off valves are also designed for very low pressures. Once the appliance's gas legs (or branch lines) are properly capped you can air the system up to 60 lbs (or more). As for pipe compound (pipe dope), the main purpose of pipe dope is to lube the threads so you can properly tighten and (possibly later) loosen the joint....it is absolutely NOT to make the seal. The(malleable) metal to metal, threaded portion should make the permanent seal. I gotta go.......thx.

You use a tape then the pipe dope "liquid stuff" the tape does the sealing the pipe dope "liquid stuff" is used as a lubricant so its easier to get it tighter. That's how I was trained from the ole graybeards on the job 20 years ago. Ben using both ever since never had a leak. I have not had a chance to use the blue ( I just looked at it yesterday I think its gorilla or king Kong )but 12 dollhairs 😁 at the home death spot. I don't get it because I already have a tried and true system tape then dope. Good to go.
@erikbogart676

Absolutely a waste of time and material. I have proven this time and time again with my guys. I only use dope on water in underground applications for 20 years and not once have I ever had a call back. We have 3 areas in the county water system where it is common to see upwards 200 psi. At the curb. If dope can handle that, there isn't a gas line on earth going to match that demand. Thread tape was from my old days really, we still call it dope, but it's not, It's very rare to find true dope any more. Now we use ptfe, aka Teflon paste. Dope was petroleum based, which ate plastic, so we had to use thread tape on plastic. Out of habit I still tape plastic threads, I feel it also helps fill the threads. But it's unnecessary now, and to go a bit further, if you do use tape on gas you need the yellow gas tape because the regular spreads off into the gas line and can clog orifices. Or just use dope and be done lol.
