Make your own Boundary Microphones that sound great for little cost and effort. This is a little theory on how it works and how to make your own -the way I did it.

For PZMs to have a flat frequency response, they need to be placed on a large boundary such as a wall or the floor. If a PZM is used up in the air, it will have a peaky frequency response due to the sound diffraction of the small plate that it is mounted on. For example, a 6" square panel will create a diffraction peak at 2260 Hz. The equation is F = C/W, where F is the frequency of the peak, C is the speed of sound in inches per second, and W is the wavelength or the dimension of the panel in inches. This information comes from my research as a Crown microphone engineer.

Thanks for the video. I’d love to hear some actual recordings. Also, how large is the gap between your mic element and the reflective surface? And as someone mentioned below, I thought that one would nominally want a larger reflective surface (I’m guessing that would be for focusing, or reflecting lower frequencies?). But I’m far from an expert, and if it works, it works!

Very Good. Thank you! Brad when u record do you have the mics against the plates pointing in the opposite direction of the drums like in the diagram? I know it's all about experimenting. I would like to place two small electret condenser mics at either side and underneath the piano lid and close it. I'm wondering would I need a plate as the pisni lid itself would act like a boundary? I want to get a nice close up sound for an ambient reverberant piano sound. I will also place a contact mic on the soundboard. The piano soundboard us amazing for natural reverb for other applications Cheers Brad!

Are the mics actually touching the plexiglass, or are they a few millimeters away?

Your reflexion plates are way too small. No bass rendering that way.

True, but thats not always a bad thing if you understand going in. I like only getting bass from one or 2 sources on a drum kit to clean up the low end.

You have horrible compression artifacts on this recording. The mic sounds good but the audio has that telltale twangy sound. Did you record to MP3 first or something?
@bplabs

*****, compression artifacts are in every video you see/hear on youtube; youtube has it's own codec process and that audio has been compressed at least once before it has been uploaded by everybody (in my case MP4) -don't even get me started on the quantization errors caused by A to D conversion or dithering from resampling mismatched sample rates or bit depths. Seems like you may prefer to listen to lossless formats or analog.
