DIY Reseleable and Reusable Lunch and Snacks bags | My Golden Thimble

Make your own reusable "Ziploc-like" lunch and snacks bags in just a few minutes.
Forget about velcro and use the very same close up like a resealable bag. This will keep your lunch more secure and also travel safe! This is what I used for this video:

Materials used in this tutorial:
I suggest you use Oil Cloth Fabric for this project due to its waterproof capacity and the easiness to clean.
This fabric is mostly used for outdoor tablecloth but it is also perfect for this "Ziploc-like" bags.

Hi! It's a good idea to make reusable snack bag, and it's true that it is good for the environment, but I don't see the point of doing them if you cut plastic bag to make them. You can't really reuse the plastic bag after, so it's not that environmental friendly. You could use velcro, zipper and snap among other things.

It's very difficult to keep the plastic Ziploc tab in place when sewing. What do you do with the rest of the bag?? 🤔

How do you wash them? How many times can you use it before you need to throw it away? How does it respond to things that may seep out of whatever's in there like oil, condiments, liquids?

Hola Míriam. Pues aunque parezca raro yo utilice cada bolsa original una vez y luego las lave para hacer este projecto. Y aún así no las tire de inmediato, el desecho de plástico lo use para recoger las popis de mis perritos cuándo los llevo a pasear al parque. Siempre busco reutilizar lo más posible empaques como este. Y claro buscar reemplazos para reducir su consumo como estas lindas bolsitas que aquí vez.

How can we know if the oilcloth or plastic tablecloth is food safe plastic?

Hi Janice, the ideal thing to do will be to check the fabric specifications. Unfortunately, as this is different use that they are intended for, not all fabrics will have this note. That doesn't mean that you can't do something to be extra safe: 1. Use good quality fabric. 2. Wash and Disinfect the bags before you use them with food. 3. Make sure they dry completely after washing. 4. If you are going to use tablecloth or oilcloth with prints on the fabric make sure the prints are outside the fabric to ensure that this part won't be touching the food directly. (seems obvious but double check especially on see trough prints like my snack bag in the video) 5. Check the life of the bag. They are reusable -not eternal-. As they will be in constant use and in a constant wash there will be a time when they too will have to be replaced. The same applies to the woven fabric bags. Thanks for writing!

If you buy plastic bags to use the sealable closure, you are wasting the plastic bag which is thrown away. In which case, why not wash and reuse the plastic bag? They last for months this way and dry overnight. This is a lot of work to then be NOT environmentally friendly!
