I modeled this cube and construction jigs in fusion 360. The dome is made from acrylic, I ordered that by size and glued it together with chloroform. All black plastic was printed on my CR10S-pro and glued with chloroform. Inside the box are 4 x 60A power supplies mounted on a 4mm thick aluminum plate. Running all led's to the max will need around 1200 watt of power. I have a custom PCB with a Teensy 4.0 mounted on it. Only 3 pins of the Teensy are used to drive 32 channels with 128 leds each. The refresh rate of the display and the animations is 178 frames per second. Everything is non blocking and refreshing the display is done with DMA taking zero processor time. There also is an esp8266 and a touchscreen connected to the PCB, that will need to be programmed at a later time.
Every led was bend and cut using a 3d printed jig. All coper wire was drawn through a draw plate to work harden the copper and make it the right diameter after this the wire was straightened using a drill. All led's are than soldered on the copper wires using a 3d printed jig. That is than assembled in 16 blocks using other jigs. Everything is modular and if a led breaks in the middle I can just lift out a block and fix it....
I don't recommend making this. Led bending alone took 80 hours, designing, soldering and coding took many many more. Don't be crazy like me....

Sweet!! I remember the 2D predecessor from the 80's, hanging on a wall behind the DJ in our discotheques. That was just a flat square with white lights, creating dazzling patterns, but very impressive for its time. It probably got controlled by a ZX Spectrum or something. :) This is some trippy stuff man. Kudos.

😂 8^3 Is a good size to start with. Never made that size myself but there are many reasons to pick that one. Good luck and no need to do BAM and rows and rows of shift registers and/or transistors in present days. Use the new smart leds (if you do try some first and see if they need a capacitor) or led drivers like tlc4950.

I have a build video in the making, there will be some patterns in there. My old 9x9x9 cube has more patterns than this monster (also on YT). I do still have some work to do on this one, but there are so many things i want to do. I have made a new pattern for my infinity mirror dodecahedron, it was quite complex but not that good looking sadly. If i can make it better i’ll upload that one. My old cube has rotating atoms (using quaternions) that still is my favorite pattern and definitely needs to be in this beauty. If only there were more people make animations for these kind of displays, so we can borrow from eachother.

This is a master piece! It is already very relaxing to see from the video. I can only imagine how wonderful it is live! I'm planning to buy a 3D printer and start doing some cool projects. Maybe, when I get enough experience and confidence I can try to build one myself. I have a question / curiosity. How stable is the cube, in case it is necessary to move it (a new home, for example)? Would it misalign the LED strings?
@MaltWhiskey
@MaltWhiskey 2 жыл бұрын

Crazy :). What do you mean with DMA to refresh the display?
@MaltWhiskey
@MaltWhiskey 2 жыл бұрын
DMA is a tech that allows accessing memory independently from the processor. In my case i use it to move data from memory out to 3 gpio outputs: a clock, latch and data pin. In effect i copy the memory to the led’s without using a single cpu cycle, leaving all processing power to do something else like calculating animations.

Apparently KZfaq will not allow me to comment on your most recent video for some reason. Not sure why. I saw worse words in some of your other comments. Here's pretty much my original post without the one pseudo-profane word. We'll see if this gets to you (if I'm not for some reason banned from your entire channel)... Incredible! I'm impressed with your ingenuity and creativity. But most amazing to me is your perseverance and patience. I really admire that!! How long did it take from the initial 'provocation' to removing the final glitch? Also thanks for putting everything on github. How generous is that?!? PS: I'm also a big fan of Teensy 4.x boards and the Wesley's of this world. Take care.
@MaltWhiskey
@MaltWhiskey 2 жыл бұрын
Wow i see your message :P I’m not to sure, how long it took, may have been more than a year. But a lot of that was just thinking about how to do things, the relevant things are now in the video. I think i build it in around 4 months. I wrote the c++ to control the leds before i even ordered the pcb, just as a mental process. That final glitch worried me a bit, but it was easy to fix luckily because you can impedance match and adjust drive strength with Teensy 4, definitely a very good board (hope there will be wifi in teensy 5). Wesley is a very headstrong cat and a real panther. The vet barely survived a visit :P

@@MaltWhiskey Was not expecting a response so fast.😁 And thanks. I didn't see the LCD display in the video. I have built some cubes myself, much simpler ones, and years ago. In my latest and best cube I used hardware PWM LED drivers (TLC5940 I think if I remember) and wrote the software drivers myself. The tricky part was the timing of it all, between calculating the frames and pushing them out through what is basically SPI protocol. So I was mostly interested in how you drive the LEDs using DMA. Very well done. I know how much time goes into the thinking stuff and how satisfying it is when it works. Are you still working on it, or is it a finished project as far as you are concerned?

@MaltWhiskey
@MaltWhiskey Жыл бұрын
That would be 1200 watt times hour, not per hour. It’s not an average, but total amount of energy used (Wh). But this thing CAN use a lot of power, but that doesn’t mean it HAS to. Normal operation uses 10 times less, so that’s about 1 euro if you run it for 24 hours. If run in bright as the sun mode (impossible to look at without going blind) than those 24 hours will cost you 12 euro.
