Just built mine, can't wait to try it. Kicker Snap Users note you will have to modify the shape a little, add more padding around the handles to give the trainer feet something to rest on. I'm also thinking of adding two ports or slots on top of the where the yoga balls contact the top plate to make refills more convenient. Nice design, thanks for sharing it!

Brilliant. Followed your directions which were very helpful and ended up with a terrific result. Used 17mm structural ply cutout on a Zund plotter after templating on brown paper whilst following your basic layout. Finished the surface with Feast and Watson glass finish after first staining to match bike colours. Thanks again for all the details. AB

Don't you think only 2 bearing would do the job as they are supposed to support 255kg/m each? Why 4? And how much do you prefer this fore/aft movement version over the only lateral one? Thanks again.

Have built this now and ridden with it a while now. I'm very pleased with the movement. It makes trainer rides quite a bit more varied and comfortable. A very worthwhile addition. Thanks for the design. I popped a suspension ball early on (lucky I bought some spares). I balance the pressures on each side by using the spirit level but am playing with the absolute pressure. ATM it feels too easy to swing the bike side to side but I'm a bit wary of increasing the ball pressure too much in case they pop. Maybe the subject of another video - setting up the balls? Maybe I need to increase the number of balls...?
@WeRideSouth
@WeRideSouth 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Increasing the pressure will increase the resistance. I've only heard of a few people having issues with ruptured balls. It could be a defect in the ball quality. You can definitely increase the number of balls if that's an option.

The plans are amazing! This is a better design than some of the commercial versions that are out there. I modified the design specifically for a Wahoo Kickr Bike so it is shorter by 5 inches. Bought the 13 ply 3/4" Baltic Birch plywood which is really nice to work with. CNC really isn't necessary if you are good with a router and a straight edge. A spindle sander is also helpful. I personally don't want much travel fore and aft so I am doubling the number of springs and pre-loading by one inch each. I also found that placing washers for 3/4 inch bolts solves the problem of the spring pressing on the linear motion bearings. 3/4 inch washers are oversize on the I.D. so they thread onto the 20mm shaft perfectly. Thinking it may make sense to put a thin coat of grease on the rod where the linear motion bearings travel? I paint carbon fiber frames for fun so this puppy is going to get a custom airbrush "basketweave" and then topped off with clear coat. Almost finished and can't wait to test it out! Thanks again for all of the collaboration here!!

Update: Assembled (no finish applied yet) and tested. This is an AMAZING design. Riding motion is so much better than without the rocker board. Doubling the number of spings provides the exact amount of fore and aft motion that I was looking for. Super enjoyable project for a DIY'er - it took about 1 1/2 weeks of spare time. The build is "industrial quality" using all of the supplies and recommendations from Andrew. I've also determined that with the Kickr Bike it isn't necessary to tie it down to the top plate as the bike weighs about 100 lbs and the flywheel is massive (50 lbs?). I attempted to tip it while riding and it isn't going anywhere. Obviously, you need to determine if this is appropriate for your bike and rocker plate setup. Finish Update: Rather than a custom paint job I've decided to take the Wahoo Kickr mat I bought, and adhere it to the top plate with 3M Super 77 spray adhesive. Once adhered, I'll trim it with a knife to about 1/4" overhang, flip the plate upside down and use a straight router bit with a roller pilot riding on the edge of the ply to trim it perfectly flush. I know it is an expensive mat to sacrifice but it is cheaper than the cost of the automotive paint I would use if I did the custom paint job. If you like this idea I know that there are cheaper mats on Amazon. This will provide a nice "no-slip" and tough finish to the top plate.

One more year and I decided a service was due as there were some clonking noises when honking out of the saddle on climbs. I also wanted to cut some holes is the top plate so that I could top up the balls with air by pumping from the top rather than the sides. I found that the steel rod had a 2 inch long wear groove in it. I turned it through 90deg, re-greased and re-assembled. It's OK for now but long term I think it would be better to get a new rod and have it hardened. Slots on top for pumping the balls is great. I also upgraded the balls from the very thin pimpled ones, as in this video, to the mini basket ball look-alikes which are more heavy duty. Popping balls I hope will be a thing of the past. I've also rested the whole thing on a pair of tubular tyres, pumped up to around 20psi to try to give the feel of being on a bike with tyres rather than rigidly hard on the ground. Thanks again for the original idea and design.

Build complete, but with some issues. I need to do a little more engineering. Main issue is the clearance of the top board . Once the bike is mounted Im losing clearance as the top of the standoffs are hitting the top. You mentioned raisers or washers for the linear bearings, I will try to raise that to see if works. When the balls are in, it does raise the level, but it causes the board to flex. Some positioning is required. Any further tips on clearance solutons?

Just getting my new Wahoo next month when they become available. Been a road rider for years but now live in So Texas and I'm not to keen on riding on the road ( not a bike friendly city). We build a lot of machines at my work. Would love to build one of these. Looks really easy once you get the boards built. A person could build those boards with a router if he had a print to go off. Sometimes CNC guys can be a bit pricey. Do you have the drawing for the boards? Are you planning to sale just the boards? What a great build and time you took to show how easy it is to build one. Hi, my name is Domenico and I’m writing from Italy. Excellent project. If I used springs with 2.5mm wire and 28mm external diameter but only 120mm in length… considering the slight compression I would have to give to stabilize the upper board, would the oscillation be little? Otherwise I could use springs with 2mm wire and 28mm diameter with a length of 150mm. I don’t know and I would like your suggestion on this hypothesis: If the springs are 120mm, having the wire 2.5mm (instead of 2mm) I would still get good resistance. What do you think? These are theoretical reasonings also because I haven’t seen your test of your Rocker Plate. Hello, thanks and see you soon 😉

Should these be 30 or 40mm? Also, if you are still updating the spreadsheet, the 20mm shaft is no longer available on Amazon, but the seller (VXB) does have them available on their website. Hey. That is for sharing this. A couple questions... 1. At around 50sec where you're demonstrating the design spring is fixed with a collar, any benefit here? 2. How do you prevent overtravel of the top plate in reference to the bottom plate? I'm concerned that the springs won't be strong enough. Thoughts? 3. Did you notice clearance issues between the rod bracket on bottom plate to the top plate when assembled?
@WeRideSouth
@WeRideSouth 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching! So to answer your questions: 1. This was a prototype and I hadn't finalized the top linear bearings where they would leverage the linear rod supports, so this really isn't necessary with the new design which preloads the springs against the rod supports. 2. The springs are pre-loaded and counter act each other. Behind the spring is the linear rod support so you physically cannot go any further once you compressed the springs completely. If you're concerned about this you could beef up the springs with thicker wire. I have not had an issue. 3. There is an issue with SCS vs SBR bearings. The SCS bearings require about a 3-5mm riser vs the SBR that do not require a riser; however, the SBR are 35mm mounting holes vs the 40mm of the SCS so if you've already cut, switching probably isn't in the cards. You can cut some from wood or plastic. I hope that answers your questions.

Sure does! Thanks man. The design itself was really easy to reproduce so far. I don't have a cnc either so my buddies and I made a couple of hardboard templates, jig sawwed it and routed to finish. The "hard" part is getting the rod installed. Without the cnc, a good template is needed to get your bolt holes correctly located. But my buddy who ordered the bearing blocks assumed the 35mm spacing and we bought the 40mm spacing. Our template is jacked up for that now! Lol.

Great design. Love the idea of fore and aft motion. Had a look at the spreadsheet and have some questions. What is the riser plate for? Why are there 2 dxf files of each 35 and 40mm plate? Each dxf shows both top and bottom so that's 8 plates in total!!! Also why 35 or 40mm? - you mention 3/4" plywood - that would be 19mm, wouldn't it? Thanks in advance.
@WeRideSouth
@WeRideSouth 3 жыл бұрын
I use 18mm plywood, you can use either. 35 vs 40 is depending on the bearings you use. SBR20UU have a 35mm hole spacing and require a different layout. SCS20UU have a 40mm spacing. The SCS20UUs have a problem clearing the lower rod supports so you'll need at least 3mm spacers on top to help clear. Good luck!

Hey Andrew, quick question on the ball placement. I notice your designs are evolving from the wider bottom board in the video to a narrower version in the DXF file. In the the video, the balls are placed quite wide either side (pretty much as far wide as they could go) but in the DXF version they are closer to the central pivot line. Any difference in performance or feel between the two? I've kept my top and bottom boards the same size so have options on where to place the balls. Thanks!
@WeRideSouth
@WeRideSouth 3 жыл бұрын
Hello Tim! There is a bit of discussion about ball placement on the Rocker Plate group and ideally you want the center of the balls to be 6 to 8 inches from the center line of the the pivot point, but it all comes down to feel. The further you put the balls out the more "stiff" the side to side motion becomes. Less stiff the closer in you go. Hope that helps.

Hi, I've used mine for over a year now and it's beginning to sound crunchy when I go fore and aft too far. I suspect it's the springs hitting the bearings too hard. I'll take it apart when the weather is warmer and look at putting in some soft end/bump stops. Anyone else had this and come up with a fix? It's a right pain getting to the balls to top them up too. Is there a way of extending the ball out to a presta valve with a tube or something?
@WeRideSouth
@WeRideSouth 2 жыл бұрын
Some people use 20mm washers in front and back of each bearing. This should do the trick. As far as getting to the balls you can use whatever inflatable ones you like. Some people drill access holes in the top and put the port facing that hole. I haven't had issues with the pressure in mine fluctuating that badly. I've only ever had to fill them up once or twice in a year.

Linear bearings are designed to be linear bearings - not rotational. Just because they can doesn't mean they like it. When you rotate a linear bearing, the bearing balls are being side loaded and are unable to roll, so all of the balls in contact are point loaded as they're pretty much locked in place. The linear channels allow the balls to recirculate when moving along the axis, there's no provision for rotation. The only reason these would survive being used like this is because the load rating would be far above what they're rated for.

A cosa serve l isolatore del rumore ? Come fare i fori nella piastra superiore per fissare i cuscinetti lineari?
@WeRideSouth
@WeRideSouth 3 жыл бұрын
I'm going to take stab at answering this from google translate. The bearing isolator is a different type of rocker plate. I used a simple drill and bit to make the holes in the top plate.
@francescobasile2792
@francescobasile2792 3 жыл бұрын
@@WeRideSouth clearly with a drill I mean how to take the distance between one bearing and the other and how to make the holes in the top plate so that they match the holes in the bearings
@WeRideSouth
@WeRideSouth 3 жыл бұрын
@@francescobasile2792 once I received my bearings, I measured from center to center on the bearing bolt holes, I believe they were 40mm from side to side as well as top to bottom. Then I made a template and placed them along the center line of the board.. In a more recent video I released the DXF file of my bearing placement based on standoffs/spring placement. This may be something you have sort out if you go with a modified design.

Confused as to why all these boards involve the front wheel. Why not build a smaller board and just have the front wheel raised on a normal block of wood? The front wheel will move back and forth and rock side to side anyway without the need for a long difficult to store, when not in use, board.
