This DIY Blast Gate is a super simple and effective build. You can knock out several of these in one day with scraps you have around the shop.

Those blast gates are GRRRRRRREAT! Assuming there’s no rockler sponsorship on the horizon lol

I wouldn't ever want to work with them or recommend them after my experiences with the company. My integrity is worth more than their money or free products lol.

Great video. I like the salvaging part. Only one comment though, the way you are ripping your plywood is extremely dangerous and can result in a kick back. I know you are using a sawstop so you are not worried about your fingers but the way you are pushing the off cut and leaving the actual piece hanging out between the fence and the blade could result in shooting that piece towards you. Use a push stick and keep that piece supported and push it through all the way and don’t worry about the offcut

Thanks! Even though I have a saw stop, I still treat the saw as if it does not have the feature. I use a push stick most of the time, but will often do a single cut without it in situations where I am needing a clearer camera angle for the video. Luckily I have moved some things around now so I don't have to do that any more in my newer videos.

@@CombsDesign Sorry man. No camera angle is worth kick back. I can show you the mark I still hold over a decade later. Use a push stick/ block every time.

I’m not sure why so many KZfaqrs endorse their stuff. A lot of it is cheap junk, other stuff solves made up wood working problems lol. I guess money will make someone sponsor just about anything.

Your design is a big improvement over those I cobbled together 40 years ago and, because I'd like to build all the gates I need in one day, I'll forego the nifty looking single pivot design Katz-Moses and some of the others demonstrate. I need 2 @ 8", 5 @ 6", 4 @ 5" and 2 @ 4". The straight edges of your gates lend themselves to modification to serve as secure mounts directly to the wall and two-point suspension several feet below high ceilings. With your straight-forward design I might actually get all 13 pieces done in one long day though I shudder to think of the mess it will make without central dust collection. Thank you for posting this video. PS: Rockler deserves every thump you dished out.
@CombsDesign
@CombsDesign 3 жыл бұрын
This is a super quick build that can very easily be batched out! Best of luck getting all 13 done, I think you can do all of them if you build all the parts first and assemble them almost like a factory production.

@@CombsDesign As a pup I worked on a few factory assembly lines. What do you think of sandwiching in a layer of paper on both sides of the central laminations to gain a little clearance for the slide?
@CombsDesign
@CombsDesign 3 жыл бұрын
I’ve actually never tried that so I don’t know for sure, but I don’t see why that couldn’t work! Adding paste wax will help a ton for sure, but you’ll definitely need some physical clearance as well.

An Irishman here on KZfaq built a similar design but chamfered the edges. Of course, that makes the outside age gracefully. One or two coats of water-based varnish will keep your gates nice for a lifetime of use. No kidding, I'm ashamed of the crap I made when I was young. Those gates are now in the firewood pile.
@CombsDesign
@CombsDesign 2 жыл бұрын
Haha, I have a plenty of failed projects myself! Chamfering would be a good idea.

I lost a big chunk of my thumb making dado cuts like you did here. Using your fingers to hold the piece down as you slide it over the blade is asking for trouble. All it has to do is catch the blade and sling it out of the way and your hand drops onto the blade. Don't mean to preach here, I did it the same way for twenty years before it happened to me. It's just a matter of time. Other than that, nice design, nice vid.

Really enjoy the videos! I have been following your channel for a few months, your video has inspired me to take my blast gates to the next level. My wife and I have a woodshop channel called "themckeels" this weekend I'll make a build video with this design. I was wondering if it would be okay if I quote your video and add a link to it in our description? I really like your design, but in addition to your design, I'll be adding micro limit switches that will automatically turn on and off my jet dust collection system. Let me know what you think! Thanks Aaron*

Nice Work! Definitely worth to recreate... But the way you 'lead' your wood through your table saw scares me to hell every time. PLEASE use a push block in the future and don't put pressure on the offcut side till the end of the cut.

Why did you call the rocker D.C. “junk” I would like to know I’m shopping now
@CombsDesign
@CombsDesign 3 жыл бұрын
For a few reasons, first, the plastic pieces are not bonded well with glue, so the 2 parts separate very easily. Second, they are so light that they will just close on their own from time to time when using tools. This will stop the collection without you realizing it, and make a mess. The third thing is the biggest problem, they have a huge design flaw. There are open cavities in the blast gate that fine dust will get impacted in, but there is no way to clean it out. In my experience with about 6 or 8 of these, they all stopped being able to close fully due to impacted dust after a few months. Finally, Rockler has terrible customer service in my experience, so I avoid them when possible. For me, it was $80 in the trash after a few months, except for the salvaged parts.

@Bob Webber I just realized that you were asking about the dust collector and not the Rockler Stable Gate, here is why, and sorry I misunderstood! kzfaq.info/get/bejne/o9eSmJd6p7GZdI0.html They are both terrible products, I did not feel like a negative tool review belonged on my Combs Design channel, so I put it on my personal account. I sent the video I linked above to Rockler and I had a customer support representative tell me that the amount of dust I saw on the infeed side was normal.

Thanks again..... I understand now. Did you ever find out what the problem was. Did’nt get 650CFM? Dust collection is all about flow at the tool. Have not bought yet still shopping. I need around 950 CFM at the collector to get what I need at the end of my piping run. I appreciate your candor thanks again
@CombsDesign
@CombsDesign 3 жыл бұрын
No idea what the problem was, Rockler continued to insist that it was not a faulty product. My advice would be to buy oversized even after doing the math. The Jet 717515 would probably work for you, they only list CFM at 6", so you would probably need to call for the rating at 4". I have the next size up from that one and it does a great job. The 30 gallon drum fills up surprisingly fast, though. For me, the Rockler unit ended up in the trash.
