This week I built a DIY Shop Air Filter to improve the air quality in my garage workshop. Since I don't currently have any type of filtration system in my shop, I'm hoping this will help at least a little bit. The build was pretty easy using up a bunch of scrap plywood around the shop. If you're in need of a shop air filter, I think this is a good solution to at least get the ball rolling in the right direction of higher quality air. We want to be making and building things as long as we are able to, and this certainly will help!

Great build! Going to build something like this myself this week and your design is the one I'm using. One tiny warning for you in the future though, never good to heat anything zinc coated without a very good respirator. It vaporizes at low temps and breathing the fumes from it can cause neurological problems with a delayed response. Being a metalsmith, I never heat any zinc indoors, ever.

Awesome, good luck with the build! Someone else mentioned adding some baffles (I think) on the inside to help the fan perform better. I haven’t tried that yet but maybe it’ll help you. Also- I really appreciate the words of caution about the zinc coating! I did not know that. So thanks for the warning😃

The style of fan is meant to have no static pressure, open air. The fan likely has a low cfm rating (if any), so it probably can't overcome much of any resistance. The filters are larger (not thickness) than the 9" area the fan can pull, so it's adding even a larger resistance.
@DoingWhatever
@DoingWhatever 3 жыл бұрын
I see. The box said it was rated at 1,200 cfm but with the filters it's definitely not near that. Someone else suggested adding baffles inside the box - I'll have to try that. Thanks for the info, I appreciate it!

Yep finding the right fan is the hardest part. 1. How much CFM does the fan have under a little resistance load? 2. How long will that fan last? 3-5 years. 1 year is bad. and 3. How loud is it. Some fans are quieter than others. All of these reasons I can't find a fan yet. Nice build though!

Definitely a handful of things to consider! If I come across a decent squirrel cage fan I think I’m going to try that and see how it goes. Thanks for watching!

Hola!🖐I'm at beginning stage of building out my shop in my garage. In doing so I'm picking up ideas on air filtration and dust collection by watching videos like yours. Thanks for making and sharing this video. Maybe not the absolute best option out there but I definitely learned something by watching this. Take care and have a good one, Adios! 👊

Nice build! A few thoughts... A single one the the air filters that you are using may only be able to handle up to 1000CFM or so. The Menards fan in the description does not have a CFM rating but I'm thinking that it would probably exceed 1000CFM. That means that the fan's performance will like be impeded even with a single filter. If the manufacturers recommended airflow is exceeded then the filter may not preform at it's intended MERV rating either. If you want to improve the performance consider adding more filters in parallel, not just another fan.

Remake it to accomodate a centrigugal blower. They make more flow and more vacuum/pressure, thus pushing more air through the filters.

Try it with just one filter. Or rebuild and use a 5” thick merv 8 filter.

Yea, right now I'm just running one filter and it works fine. I'm probably going to try a different fan in the future or just buy one lol. Thanks for the suggestion 😃

I don't think you need to triple stack the filters. Try removing one or two of the filters. The size of particles you are trying to remove from the air should determine the type of filter you use. Search the web for Merv rating.. WARNING: Nerd talk ahead; The higher the Merv number the smaller the particle size the filter will, well filter. Two 6 Merv rated filters does not give you a 12 Merv rating. Airflow is based somewhat on surface area. A 20X20 1in pleated filter has 4.7 sq feet of surface, while a 2in pleated filter has 8.1 sq feet, and 4 in has 15.4. The air resistance on a 1 in. MERV 7 and a 4 in. MERV 11 are approximately the same. Basically the more surface area you have in a single filter the better your airflow thru it. Try a single 2in filter and see what happens.

Thank you for all the information! Yea, currently I'm only using two of the three filters but maybe I will modify the box to use just (1) 2" filter instead like you suggested. Thanks again! 😁

@@DoingWhatever I agree with Pete. In our old house, we had a new furnace installed, we have since moved, and our new home shares the same type of new, smaller furnace. An HVAC fella told us to use just one filter, and to use the cheaper 'Filtrate' filters, with the 300# as the new high-efficiency furnaces do not breathe well when you use multiple filters. We have found our furnace runs better, cleaner, and we have less dust. Remove a couple filters, and if you have a dust collection system...you'll be fine.

@@DoingWhatever Check out some other builds where they have 5 filters and make a cube for a solution to try. The reason those work better is that any filter will increase pressure drop the more fluid you put through them (in this case the air). So if you put the filters in parallel and only put 1/5 the air through each filter the pressure drop is way lower. The pressure drop for most filters is also a curve so this "boost" is magnified. [Exponential growth, so 10% of your dP might happen in the first 20% of flowrate (CFM), but in 80%-100% of the max CFM you could see 45% of your total dP, just throwing out numbers because I cannot paste an image] Now take one filter and push all the air through it, but do that three times is where you were at; really high on the curve and then tripling that increased pressure drop, hence less flow. If you combine this parallel strategy with a finer filter rating as stated above, you will still filter the desired particulates, and increase your air flow. Note, the comment above also made a great point on comparing flow and filter rating for one filter. add more and it will be even mo-betta. the initial cost up front will be higher, but they will last longer and given even more air flow after that if you are willing to alter the box to accommodate. Otherwise the 4 inch filter will work the best as previously mentioned.

I find your idea baffling... Baffles impede airflow, not enhance it. The issue is likely to be poor impedance matching between fan and filter. The filter is a resistance to airflow, this fan is designed to move air at low pressure. More pressure is required to increase air through the filter (it is probably leaking out around the blades- they are not a close fit to the shroud). Using three filters in series is a BAD idea- triples resistance, and will not significantly increase dust collection anyway. Better to mount them in parallel (back, bottom, top). This would give a ninefold reduction in air resistance.
