I have a tip! Flip the measuring tape when deciding the length of the dress. The number will show right by your chest and it will be able to hang free, giving you a clear idea of where it will hit! :)

I made the dress!! It’s super pretty and I’m sooo happy about it. Thank you so much for the tutorial, it was very easy to follow even for a beginner! For my fellow beginners: absolutely try this tutorial out! It only took me two evenings to make it, so I think this could easily be made in one day. Also, using a patterned fabric is very forgiving if you don’t sew very straight lines, because the thread is less noticeable.

This is amazing! I’m in the middle of this project, and just a little something to keep in mind. I wanted a rather wide neck cut, which looks great, but the straps are slipping off my shoulder a bit. It is still wearable, just something to consider. I’m sure I’m going to make it again, with a bit more narrow spacing of the straps. Thank you so much for the tutorial, this is my first dress and I love it so far! :)

I thrifted a blue gingham and I'm pretty much finished, it's looking so cute :) I just have one issue and I'm having trouble finding help - how can I prevent the slimmer areas from kind of ballooning out when I try to take them in? It all looks great, but then I put the dress on and its poofy where it should be more slim! Thanks so much!

I have recently subscribed to your KZfaq channel. Your tutorials are great. May I offer some suggestions? a. I notice that you don't do any pressing with an iron as you sew. I find that pressing every seam after sewing, (to include ironing the seam as flat and then ironing the seam open), really helps the fabric drape better, locks the stitches in place and also makes it easier putting the fabric pieces together as you construct the garment. This technique is why there are so many different pressing shapes used for sewing such as "Hams" and "sleeve boards". It is so much easier to sew a rolled hem if you press it in place first. b. When making any type of strap - leave both ends open and sew one lengthwise seam. After turning the fabric "tube" right side out, center the sewn seam down the center of the tube instead of on the side. Then press it in place making sure that your seam allowances are flattened open to prevent the bulkiness being on one side.. You will now have an invisible seam that can be placed towards the inside of the garment. If using a finer fabric you can also topstitch both sides of the strap for stability. This technique can also be applied to making belts. c. To prevent the facing curl that is happening with the front of your dress design you can press it in place with the inner facing pulled ever so slightly towards the inside and then topstitch along the outside which will stabilize the opening edges. [Your garment construction technique doesn't allow for using a facing under stitching technique which is traditionally used to prevent faced edges from curling outward.]
@yongxinee8927

These tips are fantastic for beginners! I am just learning about understitching. Do you think it is possible to slightly alter the garment construction to make understitching possible? For example, by sewing the top seam of the front panel first, then understitching that seam, then sewing the rest of the side seams for the front outer fabric and the facing, then understitching as much as possible until you get blocked and can't anymore? Thanks! I'm definitely using your suggestions when I try making this dress :D

How do you get it over your head when you make the sides so tight? I’ve starting making this dress today, and after sewing the sides together pretty loosely, I want to take it in under my armpits, but worried it won’t fit over my shoulders to get it off. Any feedback would be helpful, thanks!

Hello! I'm trying to make a slip dress similar to this, but with a v-neck front/back - i think I can follow similar steps, but i have silk - is it required to cut on the bias to make it flow and not be tight in all the wrong places? Or would cutting the line more a-line in the body work? Your tutorial is one of the most clear I've found - copying some of my existing dresses just isn't working! thanks!
