How to install Skim Coat concrete counters over ANY countertop material. I used Henry Featherfinish, the standard for this type of project and got great results on my old kitchen countertops.! This can be applied to laminate, wood, stone, etc.. and is a great way to update / makeover an old kitchen or bathroom.

MODERN BUILDS
Hi, My name is Mike Montgomery and I'm a MAKER; a designer, builder, and full-time content creator. Accessibility is my focus with Modern Builds, not simply accessibility of designs, but accessibility in materials, information, and projects themselves. I've focused on creating furniture and DIY projects that are simple enough that any beginner maker can accomplish, yet interesting enough that any expert might be inspired. Building and making is becoming less and less of an exclusive hobby and profession. My goal is to reduce that separation even further.

So for people asking about longevity of this approach I think I can weight in here. I actually did this same process 4 years ago this month with Henry feather finish. I used a different sealer and impregnator but you get the idea. For me the countertops mostly look the same as the day I did them. Really the main areas of wear I have seen have been the edge of the countertop by the stove and sink (places you'd lean against). For the price id do again. My previous laminate was trash and this is a good solution. The nice thing, for the price of materials, if you don't like it you can just buy another countertop and not be out too much more than before the project. Hope you like your results. Cheers

Random tips to add: A slightly thinner slurry levels easier, but its still best to do several thin coats. For the corner edge, we applied a copper right angle strip with liquid nail and a few pre-drilled flat screws, and avoided the chipping where it gets wear and tear. You can get sealers designed to add dye to have a solid color, or marbling, etc rather than gray. You're going to want it as smooth as possible so there's little sanding. A thinner mix helps this, as does finishing with a soft squeegee as a scree. We also wrapped a large cutting board in plastic and pressed it in slightly as it dried. It made a small indention that holds the cutting board still, but it can be taken out to clean.

The US is literally the wealthiest country on the planet, of course granite is available and used frequently, but not in a quick low cost DIY like this. To redo those counters in granite would have easily been $12,000-$15,000 and would require a professional company. He spent $25 on that box and probably another $20 on tools, that sealant costs $30. So he has a few hours of time and under $100 invested. Concrete countertops are extremely modern and look better than granite when done correctly.
