DIY Slat Wall Headboard

Күн бұрынThe closest thing we've done to a house tour, ahaha! We had the idea for this slat wall before we ever moved into the house, and we broke ground literally the day we moved in! It took about three days, and a few helping hands, and we love it! It adds so much character to our home, and I couldn't imagine not having a feature wall like this moving forward!

I will do it in my living room. The ceiling is low and The vertical visual will give an illusion of higher ceilings! Also, I love the light wood tone.

It’s such a labor-intensive work. There are ready-made and stained wall panels and they might be less expensive.

@@KBS_ar Are you sure? 1 x 2 x 8' boards are around $800 at H.D. and she had 125 of them. Also HD wood sucks. Too many boards are cupped, twisted, etc. Not the best quality. I'm surprised she got enough good boards to do this. I wonder how it's held up a couple of years later.

Impressed with the outlook, and have few questions? 1) What is the thickness of plywood sheet you chose? 2) does the ripped strips should look like a square? Means, if we choose 24mm thickness plywood and then do we have to cut the strips 24mm, so that it looks like a square. 3) Will that be okay if we don't apply putty for soft texture and then paint it to wood color?

They didn’t use plywood. I was also wondering how thick each strip should be if it’s supposed to be square or what

But they used one by twos which would be more expensive then a sheet of plywood I would think but the plywood you’d have to have a saw or pay to have them cut. One by two is like 1.75 inch wide and .75 inch thick and then they put a .75 gap between each piece. so they aren’t square

is there a section for non warped boards at HD? I’ve looked before and all the 1x2s and similar boards all are a little warped to majorly warped

We just have to take a lot of time and search through all of them! It also helps if you do a massive online order of a full pallet!

Thank you! We cut out a notch at the bottom of each slat, but it was SO much extra work.We should have just taken the baseboard off. Would have been much less time consuming!

How did you know you would have good spacing on the ends of the wall? I tried a project like this and didn't plan ahead. We either had a huge gap at the end or had to cut the slat thin. 😪

We completely just trusted hahaha thank fully it worked out! But I think measuring before hand would have worked well too!

You could just wait until you are 6-8 boards from the corners and adjust them a teeeeeny bit to fit like you want. It wouldn't be noticeable at all I bet.

So beautiful and inspired me to start this project. Btw if you wouldn't mind could you please tell how much its gonna cost for all this 1by2 s? And home depot help you to cut them all?

The cost will depend on how large your wall is! I believe the boards are $1.98 each right now, so hopefully that can help you do the math! We have tools to cut the wood, but I am sure Home Depot has a service where someone can help get them cut too!

Love this! Did the matte polyeurthane keep the wood from turning yellow? And the Brad nailer - was it able to go through the two inches to the wall straight?

The wood has stayed the exact color that it was when we bought it, thankfully! With the nails, most went through, but there were a few that just didn't stick. I'd use longer nails if we did this a second time around!

Nice video, can you please tell me on which support you put the nail on the top of the wall ? Looks like it is against the wood baseboards on the bottom. thank you,

It's just going straight into the drywall on the top!

Did the baseboards on the floor create a problem? It looks like you glued on top of them.

We just etched out little notches to go over the baseboards, but it would have been MUCH easier to just remove the baseboard altogether!

Ideally, no! We just put too much on, and didn't realize we needed to wipe the excess immediately. Lesson learned! :)

We used a tape measurer to find the center point and then a laser level to mark it!

No we didn't! It's been about a year and a half since we did this and it's still great! Looks exactly the same as when we put it up!

Is it work if using only glue to stick the piecess on wall without using nail?

I don't think that would work very well. We used the glue as more of an extra precautionary step, but there are plenty of spots where the glue never really stuck and it's only held in place by the nail. :) So I'd say if anything, just use the nailer!

Thank you so much! The wood itself was a few hundred (maybe around $250?)! This doesn't include the tools needed though, since we either had those or borrowed from friends and family!

We should have just removed the baseboard, but seeing as it was the first day we moved into our home and didn't want to ruin any part of it, we cut little divets into each piece of wood so it would fit snuggly around the baseboard. Incredibly tedious! I'd probably do the former, if I were to do it again!

It is not. Just drywall. If we did this again we would put a backer board up first for sure!

@@gooquach6782 The majority of the nails actually are holding them into the wall, but there are definitely a few that aren't going in all the way, but thankfully the liquid nails makes up for it. If our nailer held longer nails we'd definitely have used that!

I know, it kind of like seeped out once we attached the boards to the wall! One of these days I'll go in with a fine point paint brush and paint over it all!

We actually like the look of it going all the way down to the floor, so we just cut little notches around the wood so it would fit snug over the baseboard. :)
