DIY Spindle Sander

This is a DIY spindle sander project for either a hand drill or a drill press. The spindle is made of ¾” Plywood disks that were cut out using a hole saw drill (also could use a circle cutting jig). You could make the spindle to any height or diameter needed. The sizes I use for this project are shown in a dimensioned 3D CAD view at the end of the video. Each disk is glued and screwed together, then sanded down as a whole unit to be a perfect circle. A hole is drilled all the way through the spindle to accept a 1 ¼” sheetrock screw (two screws for large spindles). Then a slot is cut in the spindle that bisects the hole for the sheetrock screw. This slot is where the sandpaper ends will be tucked into. A ¼” Hex bolt is clamped down to the spindle with a hex nut & washer. The hand drill or drill press chuck clamps down on the end of the ¼” hex bolt.

Glad you liked the video. Hoping to post more jig videos like this soon so may want subscribe to check those out. And will do about keeping the music down. To be honest I don't like royalty free music either, would rather not include it but it does seem to fill the void of my speech pauses or verbal hiccups like umm & ahh... trying to get better about not doing those.

A drill press was used to drill pilot holes for the screws securing the sandpaper. And for the center hole for the 1/4" hex bolt, this was also done using a drill press with hole saw. It's a good point that I should have mentioned if you had a really long spindle then it may not be necessary to drill all the way through for the screws securing the sandpaper , only really need to drill through a bit past the length of the screws being used, and then of course need to cut a thin channel the entire length for fitting in the sandpaper ends.
