Average Joes Jim's Home Projects does projects and maintenance at home, that even an Average Joe can accomplish. In this episode, Jim builds a custom above ground sprinkler valve cover. By using reclaimed wood from a wood fence that blew down last winter, the cover should protect his valves and pipes from the afternoon sun that will destroy plastic and PVC over time. Good idea and design for areas that don't get a lot of rain or a lot of wind. With stucco walls it would probably be OK, but it would violate the building code if the wall was wood or wood clad, because it would give termites a route from the ground to the wood siding of your house. But this could easily be fixed by attaching metal flashings to the ends of the wood that leans against the house.

Excellent advice! I also later went back and attached two legs to the back of the cover so it’s free standing. Initially I thought the “lean-to” route would be fine, and it was, but adding those back legs really added stability. Thanks for watching!

I also dislike DIY videos with extremely annoying and loud music.

Good idea. Been thinking about something like this but never thought of making out of wood. Though it would need to be something like a cement board. That fence wood boards looks like redwood. In California there are termites, and redwood are supposed to be termite resistance which is good for this application when it is on the ground and near a house wall. Less chance to get ground termites. In my case it will get wet too be the sprinkler, which boil linseed oil or some water resistance clear coat could help. Or make a replacement when it gets worn out. Thanks.

Excellent point Tucson, a good clear coat treatment or linseed oil to protect it from the elements as well as termites is a great idea! Also I have since put some bricks under the corners to lift the box up off the ground to keep them from soaking in water when it rains and hopefully ward off the ground dwelling termites. Thanks for the input!

Off topic, interesting how you have your PVC pipe that goes into the ground surrounded by a larger PVC pipe.

I wonder also? 🤷🏽‍♂️ perhaps it’s to protect the water main as it comes out of the ground… That’s my best guess.

You should’ve built one piece straight across. It would’ve looked better than two separate pieces. You could’ve made it look like a bench or stand for potted plants.

That’s a great idea! Making them a gardening bench/pot holder would be a great upgrade to this idea!

Did you attach it to the wall. I didn't see you drill any holes.

I didn’t attach it to the wall, I just leaned it up against. It lasted that way a long time, but I decided I wanted it to free-stand so I later added two legs on the wall-side corners to make it stable.
