SUPER EASY DIY!!! You're literally going to cut a "U" out of two pieces of fabric :)
This is the perfect Summer DIY because it's breezy and effortless.
Better yet, you can customize it in any fabric you want.
BEGINNER TIPS!
If you're a beginner sewer, I would buy a fabric that can be cut clean so you don't have to hem and clean finishing all your edges.
Also buy a ribbon or trim that you can use for your straps, so you don't need to worry about those either!
MATERIALS********************
2 yards of fabric (Cropped pants are Linen, Black pants are 100% Rayon)
Measuring Tape- bit.ly/2Wxn2n3
Sewing Machine- bit.ly/2WwnpON (good starter machine)
Pins- bit.ly/2WvrWkJ
Fabric Scissors- bit.ly/2WwnsKB
Rotary Cutter (optional)- bit.ly/2Kdp0Tb
Cutting Mat (Optional)

I just made these today. I'm a plus size girl, and the pattern she describes works just fine! Take those 3 measurements she explains, and the you have to add 5 inches to your waist measurement for the between-the-legs part, and a few inches all around for seam allowance. It was super easy and they look really cute!
@sylvialove3953

Hi Reecca, where did you add the 5 inches? Would you have any pics that you could share, what they look like on a +size women? I'm 55 and a size 16 Aus and I want to make a pair of these for a Christmas function. Any help would be great.😃
@Nikki-qu3dq
@Nikki-qu3dq Жыл бұрын
@@sylvialove3953 did you figure out where she added the extra inches? Also, how is the waist measured? Is that the measurement across the top before it's folded in half to cut the crotch piece out?
@SWilliams-01
@SWilliams-01 11 ай бұрын
I think she added 5” to the waist, 5” to the crotch and 2” all around for seam allowance.

How much total fabric do I need to buy for this ? I’m a mid size woman EU44-46
@thebookwyrmslair6757
@thebookwyrmslair6757 14 күн бұрын
@@lakshmikesari7867 Depends on the width and length of your fabric. :) I'm 42" waist and 52" hips, and 42" waist to floor. If I use extra wide cotton (for quilt backing), I can easily get away with one yard. If I'm using quilting cotton (~44 in across), I'll get 2 yards, or 2.5 if I want more of a palazzo style.

Just one adjustment: for those of us with "more junk in the trunk," the "crotchal" measurement would not be divided in half. It needs to skew more to the back.

@@alexandramay4278 Maybe divide the whole measurement in 3. 1/3 for the front and 2/3 for the back, I guess.

That's correct even for petite measurements sometimes. The back is generally 3-4 inches more than the front.

@@hazeleyes6061 So, how would we cut it? cuz we can't fold the leg in half and cut anymore. Do we split each leg piece in half - one with the front crotch size and the other with the back ?
@shellyboggs9093
@shellyboggs9093 8 ай бұрын
For the straps on the front to the back. I put elastic in and sew it shut So it gets connected . When you put them on you step into the front to back loop, that way no bulky bow in the back and I feel more secure in it.
@laurablaura
@laurablaura 5 жыл бұрын
I tried making these by following the video and learned a couple of things: 1) Use the waist measurement: The width of the fabric when folded in half needs to include your 1/2 waist measurement plus the 5" or so that you cut out for the crotch. 2)Account for a hem or the waistband when cutting the length: if you do it just like Orly does, add 1/2" for the doubled-over 1/4" hem and 11/4" for the waistband for a total addition of 1.75" to your length measurement. If you want a wider hem (I did, based on my material choice), be sure to add that. Sadly, I didn't realize any of this until it was too late and I'm either going to make these pants and give them to the Goodwill or toss the material and try again. Love the look and simplicity, though!

I simply added another color of the same fabric as a panel to makeup for the s/a and the 5 inches cut out of the u. Also, if you have a really wide hip to waist ratio, u may want to use your hip measurement to ensure that the pants wrap around your hips. When I did it initially, it wouldn't even close over my hips. When I added the panels. It did.

Omgosh both cuts and colours are spot on perfection! If you notice that I’m commenting after watching this video for the first time 2 years after Orly originally posted it, it’s a testament to her foresight and fashion forward creative genius. Orly, thank you for creating these videos and being the Bestest sewing teacher ever in the world. I love how you show every item needed, how you show every single step and explain in detail how and why. However I must admit that I agree with the majority of comments that it would be greatly beneficial to also show and explain how to achieve the same piece in larger or plus size…if possible. The current woman’s average size in clothing is 16-18 which is approximately a plus size 1-2X. Although this channel will forever be my favourite and watched frequently, if anyone knows of KZfaq channel that shows very similar content but in larger sizes please let me know. ❤️ from Shannon in Canada 🇨🇦

I did trousers like these a gazillion years ago and when that fabric tore a few 5-ish years ago I' said, and have been saying, that I need to make a new pair. After seeing this I really have no excuses left- I just need to get to it! However I would offer a tip. In mine I had two buttons (one over the other, not sideways) at the back and no ties, so I had the strap that I sew into the front of the trousers with the waits measurement + about 3 inches for overlap where the buttons went (and the button holes). I did have the tying straps sewn into the back (tying at the front) but I placed them off-center so I could tie a bow to one side and not have the ties fall down right at the front. I'm considering snap-buttons for this pair however. I do remember it being a bit fumbly when going to the bathroom. 😅 *Thanks for the reminder!* 💚✨

So glad to see these making a comback! Bought a pattern (Simplicity???) back in 1971 and did a really pretty version in a black and white print satin. Instead of ties in back, I suggest you do as the old pattern did and make sure to measure the front/under panel so that it crosses slightly in back and use a heavy coat style hook and eye to secure it so there is less bulk. You can vary the leg width to taste to show as much or little of your leg as you want. Having the back/top panel come all the way around to meet in front helps with more coverage too. For those of us who are not blessed with your gorgeous figure, shape the "u" cut to fit your actual profile and add darts (especially in back) if needed. Will be making a couple of these soon! Thanks, subscribed!

Your sides were skimpy because you cut the U out of your 21" waist measurement. :) I also have a pair like this from a street fair many many moons ago. Well, they do say fashions come back around if you wait long enough. I made this exact same style in early 80s in shorts and knickers. I think my pattern could make pants, too, but I don't think I ever did those. I loved them!! One thing I did differently on some of them, esp if I had a wider strap, was to shorten the back strap so they just overlapped and then used either snaps or some sort of hook & eye fastener to save the bulk of the knot in the back so it was not so lumpy.

These are amazing! I use a wheelchair and have been looking for something that I could make that's a bit fancier than plain pants and that wasn't a skirt. I hadn't been having any luck with ones that would tick the right boxes but these look perfect! I'll have to give them a go :) So glad this showed up to me as a recommended video- I'll definitely be sticking around!
