This is a surface drive mud motor made from a 13hp (ish) Princess Auto engine. I've never had it in actually mud but I assume it would cause the belts to slip if it was thick mud. I mainly made this build for shallow water, dead heads, rocks, and weeds where the bass like to hide. These motor designs are so maintenance free and tough which why I choose to build one.

Nice job. I am building a sled with a Princess Auto engine that I hopped up. Next project is a surface drive mud motor that will be using a Suzuki Geo Metro 3 cylinder engine.

That's awesome, I'm currently building a new one with a 20hp Kohler twin, but that geo metro would fly, I'd like to see that in action.

That's awesome man. How do you think that motor would fare in saltwater?
@dooryardfabrication3973
@dooryardfabrication3973 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I'm not too sure about salt water, I'm sure there would be quicker wear on the seals, but the prop is stainless and the rest is aluminum so it might hold up well

How long is the bottom shaft??

How did you keep the shaft secure in the lower unit with no axial play? I'm trying to figure that part out before I try my hand at building one. Can't find anything on the internet that is helpful!

I’m using the Teflon flanged bushing at the end with the prop as a thrust bearing, used it for 2 summers now seems to work good.

What material did you use to seal the shaft where it comes thru the bottom from the drive sprocket and has water entered your oil at all I plan on building the same thing any suggestions thanks awesome build, Andy

HI Andy, for the bottom end thurst bearing material I used a Teflon flanged plain bearing that I machined. this keeps large dirty particles out and acts as a thrust bearing for the propeller. After the teflon bearing in the same housing a have 2 seals then a sealed bearing and then another seal in that order. just to help prevent water getting in and I packed each layer in between with a little grease. The seals I got from rockauto (part no. 471643) these will press fit in a 1.625 bore. Also the shaft is a 3/4" chrome hardened shaft, only the outside is hardened from factory so it withstands the cutting action that the seals can do. I have not checked yet to see if water has got inside but I will eventually. Hope this helps ! I'm currently building a new one with a twin engine, timing belts and electric clutch so keep an eye out for that, I will explain more in those videos. Thanks and good luck!

Also in my new mud motor I'm building, I'm changing the seal type so they have a rubber/nitrile casing oppose to the rockauto ones having a metal casing. This should help keep water out better. These seals I got from Daemar inc. They deal with bigger orders and I had to make a minimum, $50 order but they were happy to help. The part number for those seals are S07516231AS.

Great build! Where did you purchase the 3/4” hardened shaft?

Also what belt and pulley did you use for this build?
@dooryardfabrication3973
@dooryardfabrication3973 Жыл бұрын
@@gavincosper5637 I got some chrome induction hardened shaft from a local cylinder repair shop. As for belts and pulleys I bought all that at princess auto , I kept it 1:1 and went with double sheaved pulleys with 2 Vbelts
