You cannot plant sweet potatoes the same way you do regular Irish potatoes. Sweet potatoes must be started from what are called "slips" .. Fortunately slips are very easy to start but they take quite some time, so its best to start them the end of February up to the middle of March to ensure you have plenty of slips for a great and bountiful season.

I have some organic sweet potatoes from last season in my basement . The ones that I am going to TRY to spout are WRINKLING now. Will they work or do I need fresher sweet potatoes? Also, can we CUT the bottom of a sweet potato to sprout it or does that kill it? Thanks in advance for the help. I love your channel.❤

My daughter didn't like them either, UNTIL we tried a savory recipe with them. Then she loved them! I've been told when there's a vegetable you don't like, that you just haven't found the right way to fix them so you'll like them. My daughter didn't like the sweet recipes with brown sugar and marshmallows. Instead, add salt, pepper, cumin, garlic, to sweet potatoes cut into fries, sprayed with oil, and roasted in the oven, then she liked them!

at that point its best you use the soil method from my more recent video last year about SP's... bury the potato until its just covered in soil then in a few weeks lots of slips will appear... its actually better than the water method now it my experience

you can definitely still do the process but watch my more recent video I made on sweet potatoes last year and do the method of using the soil with the heating mat as it produces slips many times faster in just about 4-5 weeks instead of 3 months!

I unknowingly planted a whole sweet potato and now it’s grown many vines. Do you think I can make slips out of the vines if I cut them and soak them in water until they root? Thanks so much for your videos! I wish I had found you sooner!
@pokerchief66
@pokerchief66 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you can. Just take them off of the potato and put in some water and roots will form. Then you can plant them.
@gardenlikeaviking
@gardenlikeaviking 2 жыл бұрын
yes you can... place your hand over the potato and gently pull at the base of the vine and you should feel it separate from the potato while still leaving the potato in the ground... there should be some roots on the vine already and you can immediately plant that section in moist soil... if no roots then soak in water for 5 days to a week until you see roots then plant... good luck
@agentannie4976

@@gardenlikeaviking thank you so much! I remember where I learned to plant the sweet potato directly into the ground from. The Wild Floridian has been doing it that way successfully and since I also live in Florida, I thought I'd try. David the Good also plants pieces of the vine directly into the soil... At this point I'm going to leave my existing container as is and then do another batch the conventional way using slips and then compare... I have another video idea/request for you. I would love to learn to grow ornamental plants indoors. Yours look so healthy and beautiful... Thank you again, my friend! Keep up the wonderful work! 💗

I like your planting the slips right into compost in the bags. And checking my compost pH I get 7.5 or so. The Beauregard sweet potatoes like 5.0 to 6.5. Do you normally monitor pH? In south Florida, the time is right to get my slips into the half barrel pots but I am wondering if there is something simple I can do to get the pH right. I have some Azomite as well and what do you think of adding small amounts to the mix too?
@gardenlikeaviking
@gardenlikeaviking Жыл бұрын
after many years of adjusting PH I come to learn that it doesn't make any difference what the soil ph is because the plant will adjust the PH it needs in the rizosphere... I have not adjusted PH in any of my garden projects in at least 6 years... I never test for PH... I never even think of PH at all...

There are already some sprouts coming off the top of my sweet potato (before I even put it into a jar). Do the base of these sprouts need to be submerged under the water in order for this method to work, or will new ”slips” form if I submerge the sweet potato below these sprouts?
@gardenlikeaviking
@gardenlikeaviking 8 ай бұрын
it won't matter really because the potato will just sprout from any of the eyes so long as there's water they'll grow roots down to look for the water... but I would actually recommend you bury the sweet potato as I have found tremendously better results with that method... I made a more recent video this spring to illustrate how

We don't have compost but we do have some horse manure that is about 2 months old. Can we use that or should we buy compost?
@brucehalleran1149
@brucehalleran1149 8 ай бұрын
Got leaves? If you can find drifts of last fall's leaves, you may find ready compost on the bottom. If not ready, you still have ideal material to make compost. Gather a pile including some of the best rotted leaves spread through as an innoculant. Season with about 1/6 the amount of the horse manure, water liberally, tarp with a dark color and let the spring sun get it warm. Turn it in-for-out a couple times and let it work for as long as you have. If it isn't finished, it will finish in the beds and still be excellent early season mulch. Then next fall gather as many leaves as you have space to compost and never look back.
