Playing drums at home and getting noise complaints from the neighbours? Even with an electric kit?
Heres a quick guide to show how I built a vibration absorbing drum riser platform during lockdown using tennis balls!

They have smaller sheets of that mdf board at home depots that are big enough for you to put the throne up so your level what i did was took one i think its about 3'x3' i did an x like pattern with as many tennis balls as i could think it totalled about 10 tennis balls i put them on after i drilled the holes and put a pool noodle id cut in half kinda compressed on the outside after securing them with wood glue and then i stood on it while my wife went around and tightened every zip tie as tight as possible permanently compressing the balls under my weight its nice to have cause its movable and you dont have to worry about your throne being so low to the ground while your drums are that high

California building standards say the best insulation for anything (Heat, Wind, Electrical spark and sound) is 1 foot of air. So this design would work great. Youve essentially have a firewall under your drums. Im gonna give it a try

Awesome vid - hey, any particular reason why you didn't include room for the throne?
@smabacon
@smabacon Жыл бұрын
So when I was researching it I read that keeping it balanced evenly across the balls gave the best results. As I weigh much more than my kit, adding room for the throne would have made all the weight concentrate one one side meaning it won’t be as effective. That, and lack of space in the room. I would have had to make this thing nearly double the size to include space for a throne which wasn’t practical.

@@smabacon Ok, but I play with my throne all the way up and so I’ll need something to raise my throne or else my electronic kit will be too high for me. Any ideas of what to put under the throne seat feet to raise it?

@fanthomthom

What have you done in the end ? I think it's possible to include the throne with the drum. Didn't try yet, but I think if you put more balls below the throne area to increase the stiffness, it should compensate the weight, and prevent any unbalance issue. Don't know if I'm clear though ^^.

@@smabaconyou could build a seccond platform for the throne only, even without tennis balls. Just a small wooden riser to get it all to the same level, maybe using scrap wood. This way you wouldnt need to be sitting on a pillow

Is there a reason why you don't make it big enough for the throne also?
@smabacon
@smabacon 4 жыл бұрын
my main reason was down to space, but I've read comments from others says that its more effective to keep the throne separate. Something to do with balance and how the player is much heavier than the rest of the kit, causing the tennis balls to be more compressed in one corner under where the throne would be, thus reducing the overall absorption quality of the riser. I don't know though. I never considered it as I wanted to keep the overall footprint as small as possible.

@@smabacon understood but you should come up with a way to accommodate the drummer and the throne as they are part of "the footprint". But nice riser idea

@nicolasstrawberry4148 2 жыл бұрын
@@caduolivera7890 I built one, it definitely helped as compared to playing my kit before I built it but it’s not going to make it 100% quite, I bought a set of Roland TD17 kvx, and also the noise eater kick drum pedal and noise eater hi hat stand and even a noise eater pad to go under the kick tower and you can still hear the kick drum, no where as loud as before but you can still hear it and if I’m not wearing headphones then you’re going to hear them through speakers. Luckily my brother lives under me and he has a studio too and I hear his music too so he really can’t complain. Maybe invite your neighbor up and show them the riser and let them see you’re doing what you can to keep the noise from traveling and see if you can agree that between certain times your going to practice, or see if they want to switch apartments lol
