In this tutorial, I'll show you how to sew and glue a text block for case binding your own book. I'll also include how to add a ribbon bookmark in the process. This video focuses on just the text block for case binding method itself. I'm self-taught and came up with my own variation of binding. It's a combo of saddle, link and coptic stitching. If you're familiar with coptic stitching, this should be easy for you ;)

This is really beautiful to see. When I was a child we had a family friend who had worked as a book binder his whole life. He was very elderly (still binding when I knew him) and was always so sad that his knowledge would be lost with him - at that time he was the only traditional book binder left in our state. He would have passed away years before KZfaq existed,but I am sure he would be pleased to see this knowledge shared with the world. I remember watching him make family bibles, law books and also repairing any damaged books he could find. As a side note on technique, when making a text block he always swore by using fabric (linen or flax, I think) rather than paper to strengthen the spine. Thank you for your lovely work.

Shreya S. For what part would someone use a hotglue gun for this? Maaaaaybe to glue the spine after binding but even for that I wouldn't use it.

I've really been wanting to create a personalized book for my personal writings. While I don't see myself using this often I think that these videos are perfect! Without these videos I'd be fumbling around trying to bind a book while reading wikihow and completely failing and wasting several hours of time. Of course, I haven't attempted it yet, so wish me luck on my first try :)

I really love how this particular stitch in the binding allows the pages to lay flat. Perfect for sketching. The tutorial was friendly for a first time try. Thank you.

The sewing method is very similar to my "DIY Coptic Stitch Binding" tutorial. You can find that video on my channel page. Watching that might help you understand it a little better. The tool I used on the edge was a file or sand paper. That is just to smooth the rough edges.

I love your videos, I appreciate the clarity you provide and the extension of patience I toward myself as I'm learning. I've followed along when I make journals for years. The two modifications I have made over time are: First, I use a hooked / curved needle to sew the text block, I find it easier to grasp when it's poking through, the straight needle can be difficult to maneuver. Second, I use whatever glue I have on hand... "Yes!" diluted with a little water, basic fabric glue diluted, or even Elmer's in a pinch have all worked just fine. I've enjoyed experimenting with all kinds of different covers - most recently a quilted fabric over bookboard. Thanks again for creating these great teaching tools!

If you are doing this for the first time I highly recommend you completely skip the cutting off the edges step. I just completely ruined a planner that I was working on all weekend just in the first few cuts of this step. Uneven edges look fine to me.

I wish I had read this first! I just ruined my book too after working on it for so long... I was so excited I was almost done. It looked fine before :/ Blech. I honestly don't understand how this ever makes it straighter than it starts.

Wow I want to make my sister a book filled with quirky things about my cat and I had no idea how to go about it til these videos. Seems like so much work though.... hopefully I can follow the instructions well enough! I want to do this + the hardcover book case binding. It'll probably end up a little "homemade" and imperfect, but I think that will add some charm. And with these directions it'll sure be better than what it would have been if I just went with my own know-how! Great videos.

I have been making program booklets for some time. I found the traditional paper trimmers and paper cutters to be unreliable so I purchased a paper guillotine for around $175. I’ve been very happy with it. It has mixed reviews but I think people aren’t using it correctly. I find it important to use a piece of scrap paper, thin and cheap is fine, between your project and the machine; make sure your guides are square; and that the wheel is cranked down really tight. Then it cuts like a dream. I want to start making some hardbound books so when I saw the method used here I was happy that I already have this equipment. It’s large and it’s heavy, but if you do a lot of books, definitely worth it. Save the paper trimmer for cutting less than five sheets at once.

Great video - just one detail is missing, and that is the importance of having an uneven number of holes as in the example. I tried it with four holes (my paper was smaller) and it didn't work. Thanks for the improved version too, and for all your wonderful tutorials!

Hi Sea Lemon! I've just recently discovered you and your tutorials and already they have brought me great joy because I love everything to do with paper, crafts and the like! However, I have a question for you before I decide how to do my first book. How do I use my photo, which is laminated for protection, for the book cover instead of book cloth? How to wrap it around the edge of the board without seeming too stiff and running the risk of air bubbles in the future? I say this because I make my own bookmarks, which I laminate, but air bubbles pop up later. But I would love to have my photos on the book covers. What do you suggest? I recommend PVA glue, but if you don't have it, look for a glue that says "archival-safe" and "flexible". That might be an alternative.

These sheets are about 24 lb. I think. I would recommend at least that or thicker, but it's totally up to your preference :)

Hey guys just letting you know that instead of using a book press you can put the flat sides of 2 rulers on either side of the signatures and then clamp them together with bulldog clips and apply the glue that way. Obviously if you have a book press use that because it will work better but using the ruler things will work as an ok substitute. Bare in mind that it is a bit difficult, though.

I just finished making one of these today. After years of wanting to try bookbinding this was the first tutorial that I really understood. I hope you ended up getting your answer! I suggest using Adobe Acrobat, it will put a PDF document in a "booklet" so that the pages in each signature are in order. The only thing you'll need to do it save each signature and its own PDF. You can get a weeks free trial of Acrobat, too :)

Tiffany R Chelsea Rutherford, EIC You would preferably want to format your manuscript in Microsoft Publisher (cheaper) or InDesign (better) to print off your manuscript professionally. However there is a method that you can use. Make sure that you either set your printer to duplex mode or set the document to print even or odd numbers. Make it so that you're typing on your document in a landscape orientation. (short and wide) Then format your document into two columns. That should give you everything but a good way to add in page numbers.

Duke Skibbington making the block itself is exactly the same. Just make sure you print the right direction and size.

1. Start with a text version of the document - you may need to do some conversion. 2. Use a word processor to layout the document -- set the page size to your final product choose a legible font reasonable margins, including right and left cosmetic details like larger fonts & page breaks at chapter headings check your Table of contents 3. "pad" the document so it has a page count that is a multiple of 4 4. print to a pdf file. ***** get pdfseparate and pdfunite utilities pdfseparate will split your file into multiple files of one page each. pdfunite combines multiple pdf files into one file in designated command line order ****** 5. A single sheet signature in landscape mode will have page 4 on the left, page 1 on the right on one side, and page 2 on the left and page 3 on the right on the other side. 6. Multiple sheet signatures go (left to right) last page, first page on one side & next page, next to last page on the other, until they meet in the middle. 7. For a duplex printer use "long edge flip" , or every other page will be upside down. For simplex printing you may have to reverse the print order for the obverse side. 8. Page order for a 4 sheet signature: verso obvers sheet 1 16, 1 2,15 sheet 2 14, 3 4, 13 sheet 3 12, 5 6, 11 sheet 4 10, 7 8, 9 9. so for duplex printing you would use pdfunite and combine pages in the order of 16, 1, 2, 15, 14, 3, 4, 13, 12, 5, 6, 11, 10, 7, 8, 9 10 . for simplex printing, flipping the sheets would reverse the order so you'd need to use pdfunite twice - 16, 1, 14, 3, 12, 5, 10, 7 for side 1, and 8, 9, 6, 11, 4, 13, 2, 15 for the other --- YMMV though, so check your printer settings because I haven't tried this.

Not trying to question your infinite wisdom, but something I don't quite get - am I to understand that the endpages are only secured to the textblock by that 1/8" of glue? Why would you not attach them by more than that? Does this not mean that the block is then only attached to the cover by that 1/8"? On a semi-related note, is there any reason why you wouldn't completely paste down that endpage to the block itself? Again I don't pretend to know what I'm talking about, this just seemed strange

FrankyBabes you need to view all of it - starting at 7:55 she glues another piece to the spine and these endpapers and this makes it much more secure.

FrankyBabes If you look in a real moleskin they do the exact same thing... So I think she's just doing it like this to remain accurate to a real textblock... :P (And as far as I can see you could also just glue the whole thing down!)

FrankyBabes Yes, the endsheets are tipped to the front and back sigs by just a thin line of glue. There are several different types of reinforcements that can be used, such as crash or capping. In this case she used paper. In all my years of bookbinding I have seen very few cases where the entire endsheet is glued to the book block. It just isn't necessary, and probably undesirable. Source: I run an endsheet tipping machine in a trade bindery.

With your tutorials on kettle stitch bookbinding, I have a new hobby. You made it look fun. I ended up doing the stitches a little different. My needle was bent and i couldn't straighten it. I noticed that if I bent it on to a 90° angle, I could just hook around the previous kettle stitch without flipping the signature open. I love books and it is so cool that i can bind one that looks so neat! Use to, they looked rough. Thank you for the videos!

it's gotta be a better way, there is too much work in the sawing....maybe an engineer's perspective can eliminate the redundancy in the extra time of sawing. saw through all of them, by piercing through all the signatures then saw through them

Its about the project. Making it, every little detail worked through, living in the creation of the book. Having that memory is very rewarding when using the book, also a million times rewarding when you gift a journal thats handmade.

That is actually called saddle stitch. As with anything, it has its advantages (faster, less sewing) and its disadvantages (bulkier rounder spine, you have to trim more of the edges for them to be straight, there is also some sort of upper limit in the number of pages you can bind...). An engineer's perspective would be to choose the best method considering both the time you have and the characteristics of product you want.

Alisha Franco The first quire/signature (technically, a signature is printed; the name comes from the printer’s markings to keep the pages in order when they went to the binder) is essentially saddle-stitched, while the rest are bound using the same method as Coptic stitch binding.

art bean just stain the pages with tea and then for the cover just decorate it to look like the book and after that look up the pages on Google and copy that on to the tea stained dry pages
