Short video of me using an air hammer to pull up bathroom floor tile. I quickly realized that I was going to need a bigger tool for the thinset!
The air hammer was a garage sale purchase (running of a Husky 26 gal compressor.) The demo hammer was a rented Bosch from the Orange big box store.
If you use the Demo/Drill Hammer, here is a tool I would recommend:

I have done another small section since recording this video and highly recommend using a spray water bottle to wet down as you go. It eliminates most of the dust.

For sure using water keeps the dust down. I found that out by trial and error and made the job a little easier. Thanks for the video.

I tried soaking the thin set with hydrogen pyroxide...soaked it in 6ftx6ft squares...waited 20 minutes or so...then just scapoed it off like butter with my little hand scrapper..really dofted it up...like magic

Was your thin set attached to a wooden base? Or a concrete base? If your recommendation works it would be so much easier than drilling the ass out of the entire ground floor of the house, and still not knowing how much of the thin set would remain affixed.

I used a combination of tools 1) a demo hammer to knock the thinset down and then a floor maintainer with a diamond blade (rented from home depot). The floor maintainer produced a lot of dust but the results were terrific.

+wahinenuiloa If you do it again, try the spray bottle method. It worked great for me.

Thanks for putting this together. I am using an air hammer with a chisel blade. It is slow work. I was wondering about using a demo hammer. After seeing your video, I will stay with the air hammer. Unfortunately, I did not wet everything down, but I SHOULD HAVE! I am not completely done, so I will be wetting the rest down. Once again, thanks.

to help with the dust try removing the door knob and attach the hose of a shop vac to suck it out.

I believe that water is to keep down the dust more than anything else? I could be mistaken but thinset once cured is able to get wet and isnt affected by it.

It probably works on fake mastic thinset, but the thinset in this video was definitely the real stuff.

I have a concrete floor covered in a very thin layer of thinset...it's really not enough enough to feel as you run your hand over it, it's just the stain of the leftover thinset from the previous tile job. Do I need to remove this before re-tiling? Or will the new thinset bond to it? The only way I can think to remove it would be to grind it down with a flap disk or some kind of buffing pad, since it's not thick enough for a blade to catch on it.
@DonCornelius366
@DonCornelius366 5 жыл бұрын
Who said that the thin set HAS to be removed anyway? Wont the new thinset BOND to the old? My floor was DOUBLE TILES (thinset + tile + thinset + another tile). So, the height isn't a concern for me once I get down to the thinset that is on the concrete. My concern is, WHY {{must}} I remove it? No one is saying WHY it MUST be removed. Only one guy I've spoken with told me to go ahead and tile over the existing thinset.

Thanks for the video. I am thinking about using my air hammer to remove stubborn MDF subfloor. Air hammers are awesome - they are great to use to punch car axles out of hub assemblies. 👍

thinset seemed stable - its not always necessary to remove the thinset - rather just ensure any traces of grout/thinset migrated to the the grout joints is removed from the remaining thinset.

Much easier and better to remove the thinset and then restart from scratch.
@piezoman79
@piezoman79 3 жыл бұрын
@@markh1603 idk about easier, unless you’re working on a small space or have the equipment handy to do this yourself. Either way it’s still time consuming going to this effort. I think the point he was making is that it’s not always necessary, and I can accept that premise if the situation allows for it.

@@markh1603 yep, have them all and it “works” but I wouldn’t call it “easy”. The entire process is still labor intensive unless you have a commercial concrete grinder at your disposal.

Was your tile directly on the wood sub floor or was it one some type of backer board? If it was on backer board, is there a reason why you didn't just didn't pull the back board up?
@KMLTimesTwo

You are making this difficult for yourself. The easy way to remove thinset is with an angle grinder , dust catcher kit and shop vac . It’s fast , clean and simple .
@KMLTimesTwo
@KMLTimesTwo 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Frank. Thanks for the reply. I can't imagine that using a grinder would be even remotely close to clean. Just out of curiosity, I found the first video I came to and he said it was easy but creates a "dust bowl." You still may be right though, I have never tried it. (I grind a lot of metal....very messy.) Anyway, even if my way was harder work (and I still am not sold on that part yet) it was the dust I was trying to avoid the most.
