Great video Shannon. Chipping hammers are great tools. That one your using too which i believe is the bosch bulldog is great because it serves as a hammer drill and light duty chipping hammer. Used one at work and decided i needed to add one to the personal collection. Happy holidays!

A second person with a shop vac close to the head will keep things down. It you can a SDS chisel more than the inches for less than 150 go for it. I'm looking now as as I have rotary hammer with SDS plus on it. Thinking of using a diamond grinding wheel with dust cover to attach a shop vac. Around 60 bucks for the set up. Doing this on a slab floor. Mortar sticks very well!

What do you do if you have wire mesh between the mortar and the subfloor??

I just started a project. The thinset also has a metal mesh underneath it. Do you have any tips for this? Thanks Edit. The Bosch hammer drill I borrowed off a builder friend of mine worked well. It was a heavy bastard (aprox 45 lbs with bit), but it chewed through it all no problem.

Excellent video, Shannon! Quick question...can I use the same technique to remove thinset from concrete backer board? The dopes who installed our upstairs tile two years ago, screwed the backer board into the vinyl flooring, instead of removing it, first. As a result, we’ve got loose tiles, now, and all sorts of grout crumbling. I’m thinking about just laying down interlocking vinyl planks above the backer board.

Works, but you need someone to hold the vacuum and find a 3 inch or wider chisel.

+Robert Weigandt The same thing will work but you may also have to grind it off with a diamond cup to finish off, and that will be dusty.

So the thinset in my house is like industrial strength. I’m using a huge concrete chisel and air hammer, and the stuff barely comes up. I worked for over an hour on one small area of my kitchen and I still missed a bunch of spots that I’m going to have to grind down because they would not come up. My husband is obviously stronger, so he has better luck, but he said it’s still difficult for him! This project is a nightmare, so beware future DIYers! If your thinset is anything like mine, it’s a very challenging project. On the bright side, I’m not as worried about laying the new floor because it’s got to be easier than this 😂

Get a 20lb demo hammer or 27lb demo hammer with a thinset blade attachment. Will set you back $700.00 but you'll be removing tile and thinset like the pros.

How about the old, black, mastic used in the 50's from a concrete floor ? I have tried everything I can find, so far.

+spartanx15 That is much tougher to deal with ,usually mineral spirits will soften it enough to scrape off with a razor scraper but it is a pretty messy smelly long process.

don't forget to put some kind of decoupler between the tile and the plywood. something like durock, hardibacker, or ditra.

To avoid dust you can wet the floor before doing so

HouseImprovements OK. that helps! I just bought a diamond cup wheel and angled grinder. Every video I have seen using those cut the project time significantly

The cup will help with finishing it smooth after you get the big stuff off with the chipping hammer

Not saying adding thinset to the bottom of the Cement Board is wrong however I put mine down ONLY with Cement Board approved screws every ~8 inches. This way If I ever need/want to remove the tile/cement board, while it will be work and messy, it will be easier to cut the screws vs. having to also contend with removing both the thinset and screws. My tile has been down for 4 years and no cracks or movement whatsoever. Just my two cents.

I have a dewalt hammer drill that just keeps rotating when I set it to the hammer setting. Am I doing something wrong?

It is a hammer drill and drill. The drill in this video is a hammer drill and chipping hammer. Yours will not do this same thing

Please use a dust mask and ensure you are clearing the dust from the room with fans if you do not have a proper dust extractor. Silicosis is not cool.

Believe me . . . this doesn't work. It's not that simple. I haven't found a solution but what you have shown isn't it.
