Hello young man EJ This is John Chan the fisherman, at 54 years old, will retire in less than a year. At this moment my wife and I own 6 toyt. 2007 tundra 5.7 liter has 190k miles, 2013 rx350, 2018 nx300, 2023 gr86, 2009 yaris has 155k miles, and last but not least 2007 rx350 has less than 60k miles. Oh yeah got 22 ft fishing boat which I use my truck to tow. Point is Toyota will last a long time if you maintain it. I have been drained and refilled my transmission fluid for years. Like your video. Thanks By the way I always install a new crush washer on the drain plug.

That so called straw is used to check the fluid level when the transmission heats up to between 104 to 113 degrees. Check the tech manual for the exact temp. Once it reaches that temp, you remove the drain plug (leaving the straw in) and drain the excess fluid. Any fluid over the straw will drain. Once it stops coming out, replace the drain plug. At that point, you have the proper fluid level.

I did not use the pump. Like how you did it, I measured the amount of fluid that came out and put in the same with new fluid using a funnel that had a tube attached. I used also a vise that held the funnel and tube steady as I poured the new fluid into the hole. The vise rested on top of the battery, sitting on a piece of wood to prevent accidental spark. The car had had over 90000 miles, so I had to do it 6 times. After each change I drove the car for several days. Always did the fluid change first thing in the morning, and at the same jack stand level (I did not jack up the rear -- the front was slightly higher, but the point is that trans fluid was always cold and the jacking level was always the same, so that I could be sure what I put in was of exact amount with what was removed. I left the little straw out until the last change. Car has been running fine. I did it after having watched and learned from various KZfaqrs. Many thanks for sharing yours!

You can check if you over filled transmission bybtakingbitvfor a ride. When you get back remove the drain bolt but not the straw. Anything that leaks out without removing the straw is after the change is what extra you put in. So the straw is or acts like a dip stick. That's in there to make sure you have the exact amount of fluid in transmission that you need.

Have you run into any issues from doing it without leveling the car, that’s the only concern I have. I bought OEM Toyota fluid and I had planned on changing filter and gasket but after reading most cars go without changing it I think I’m going to return the parts.
@OverclockMedia
@OverclockMedia 3 жыл бұрын
My recommendation is that at least change your fluid. A majority don't change their fluid but to the few who do, changing even 40% of the fluid to new will help your transmission last longer. If you can change the filter I would do so too. Many don't do it, but you'd really only need to change it once in your lifetime. You would have a bullet proof ultra reliable car afterwards.

I've heard that it's not a good thing to do a complete fluid flush. Teeny tiny bits of metal inside the transmission channels may flake off and get lodged here and there inside. Over time the transmission will "become used to" having those flakes in it. Flushing out the trans and getting rid of those flakes may cause more problems with shifting etc. Just doing a regular flush like what is done in this video is the recommended routine. Though I've heard 60k miles is fine for doing a fluid change. I guess if you want to do it at 30k it won't hurt.

I put 4 quarts of transmission fluid outside where the car is the next morning I jack the car up remove the transmission fluid I measure it is approximately three little over 3 quarts and I’ve been doing it a couple of times so I know around 3.3 quarts always goes back in and it’s pretty much every time that’s what goes back in and comes out. The temperature of the oils pretty much the same as the containers just slightly odd more due to some loss oil in the container on the rag but it’s just a little over 3 quarts and as long as I stay close there it’s fine because when people do the temperature and drain it from underneath up until it stops dripping from the straw it’s heating up at the same time the oil levels changing

If you want to keep the car for as long as possible with the same transmission (and no issues) then I suggest you change the trans fluid every 30,000 miles. I have sent used transmission fluid in for laboratory analysis many times and according to the results the trans fluid starts to break down (reduced lubricity, thermal transfer abilities) right around 30,000 miles and continues to degrade from that point forward until it's changed out. What the owners manual recommends is NOT for the longevity of the transmission but rather to make it look like the car has a very low maintenance cost. All major car manufacturers started playing that game back when automotive publications started publishing "cost of ownership" numbers which had a sway on which cars interested buyers would end up purchasing. So manufacturers would just up and change the service intervals from 30,000 to 60,000 or 90,000 to make it look like their cars were so much cheaper to maintain because you don't need to change the fluids as often. All B.S! Most idiotic thing of all... now some car manufacturers are stating that the transmission fluid is "Lifetime fluid" (yup, even Toyota!) and is "good for the life of the car" and even worse they are removing transmission fluid dipsticks so that car owners don't have easy access to check the state of the trans fluid and the reason is pretty obvious..... they would be able to see how burnt the fluid is and raise a ruckus about how it can be "Lifetime fluid" when it's getting burnt to crisp. What they don't tell you is when they say "Lifetime fluid" what they really mean is that the fluid will last the life of that transmission which will be a short life!

@@EJREAX what about this???? I read this guys service procedure...........is this transmission thermostat really a big deal? ****You also need to press on the end of the transmission thermostat located just under the radiator. There is a hole in the skid shield. Press on the end of it with a flat screw driver and then insert a small pin to lock it in the open position. This is necessary as the external cooler is only open to the ATF fluid cooling circuit when the fluid is at higher temperatures. It is necessary to make sure the external cooler is also full of fluid when correctly refilling the transmission as per Toyota Tech Info procedures.

I've read around that the car has to be on and oil has to be at a certain temperature. Is this the case for you? Looks like you replaced the oil with the car off and oil at standard temperature. Trying to make sure I get that right before changing mine. Thanks!
@EJREAX
@EJREAX 3 жыл бұрын
This is not the standard way to do it, I just showed how I did it. Car has to be "level", fluid has to be a specific temp (I believe between 99°F and 110°F) when you can drain and when you fill you have to let the car run til the fluid is the same temp to truly be accurate in your procedure. I clearly didn't care enough to do all that 🤭

Have the vehicle on a level surface. Warm up the transmission to 104 to 113 degrees Fahrenheit. Once your transmission reaches temperature (between 104 and 113 degrees), remove the drain plug. If nothing drips out, add more fluid. If fluid is dripping, allow it to drip out until it almost stops. That’s what the greenish straw tube is for. It’s a measuring device set to a specific height, that height is the proper fluid level, when measured at a temperature between 104 and 113 degrees.

Laughing at there's a lifetime guarantee on the transmission fluid bulshit as a carrier and individual who likes to travel to see his family and Texas and Florida I can guarantee you there is no way possible there could be a lifetime warranty guarantee on the transmission for the transmission fluid.... That doesn't even sound realistic not even in this dimension of infinite possibilities of energy development lifetime warranty if you like 80 years old drive only on Sundays and don't have a job it'll last a lifetime
