I just wanted to give a little feedback after using this system for the past few months. I filled our first can with grass clippings and leaves just to get something going, then filled the second can slowly over time with more diverse sources of green waste. It’s working fantastically-to the point that I actually ordered a tumbler then cancelled it. I use a pitch fork to turn the compost around in the cans every few days and love that it lets me watch the progress of the process. The cans also make it really easy to shovel the compost out. The real issue I see with the tumblers is quick access for getting the compost out given their small openings. The cans completely take care of that.

Great idea using an ordinary plastic trash can with a fitted lid! Almost everyone has one of these (even an old trash can with cracks will work for this) ...which is what I use. I will have to put some brick under it. Thanks for the useful information Allen!

Thank you, Allen. I bought a cheap "tumbler" -- our problem is we don't have trees that produce enough leaf debris, so we are keeping our eyes out for neighbors who bag their leaves this Fall, mindful of Black Walnut which I've learned from the past will ruin compost. Also note, do not use a lot of fresh, wet grass clippings, just some.

Very helpful video, Allen! I already have a trash can composter. My question is how to speed up the composting process, especially in cool weather. You mentioned that there are some intensifiers. Can you please name them? I've heard that you can use yeast. What is your take on that?

I started composting sometime ago. The video added to my info. How do i use the compost.? Do i use it on its own or do i mix it with other material like peat moss perlite etc

Zikoo Hasanain depends on the plant. But normally you can just till it into existing soil.

Barbara Harrold you will need the “green” component (nitrogen) for it to work. The green doesn’t have to be grass. It could be kitchen scraps, garden trimmings, etc.

I do a lot of composting but, it never seems to hold any moisture and is very dusty what am I doing wrong. Thanks for your time.

Moisture is critical. Most composters shoot for 40-60%. You're looking for a wrung-out wet sponge consistency. Easy solution if it's too dry, is to just water it down from the top until you reach that consistency. Just make sure you're turning it regularly also. Good luck!

What if I am adding to it continually? How do you do this and pull out the composted stuff while the uncomposted matter is still in there?

Use 2 trash bins--one that you stop adding to when collection of ingredients is complete and actively composting, and the other as a holding bin for items not yet incorporated.

Here’s why I haven’t yet made a compost- most of the stuff i get out of my yard is weeds. Won’t that create more weeds when i use the “new” soil?

MokiRockOut if you make sure it breaks down all the way to the dark, rich compost, you shouldn’t have any issues.

Chop them up really good, roots and all and also make sure you arent using any that have seed pods on them

Great composting tips! But what if your soil is too rich? I planted dazzleberry sedum this spring, and it's blooms this summer have been beautiful! My only problem is, both plants have become very open, and somewhat leggy. they aren't nearly as bushy as they were when they were first planted. I read that they would do better in poor soil. Do you have any advice on creating poor soil for plants that prefer that sort of thing? Thanks from KCMO!

I don't know if you want to make your soil "poorer" but you can cut back on how much nutrients you give them. Typically with sedums like Dazzleberry you need to make sure that the soil is draining well. They like it dry, no wet feet. They can also tend to get quite leggy if they are not getting enough light, as they reeeeach out to suck in those rays. Good luck!

Just added more holes to the bottom of my composting trashcan yesterday to increase drainage so that the materials inside don't start to rot and become anerobic. Usually when this happens, it starts to attract female black soldier flies who get inside and lay eggs and their maggots eat EVERYTHING. They take more with them than they leave behind!! Then when im ready to harvest, its barely anything and all a mucky, muddy mess. So yeah, maggots and mud instead of nice fluffy compost 😑
