Setting up my DIY Truck Awning. This is on a ROLA Vortex 2 roof basket, with the extension, on my 2006 4Runner Sport. This roof rack awning is great for all weather and is easy to setup and break down. You can do it on your own!
Materials:
$4-5 each
6x 10 foot 3/4" galvanized conduit poles
(4 cut to 8 feet | 2 cut to 6.5 feet)
$10-12
8x10 "Heavy Duty" Tarp
$8
Box of different sized bungee cords
$20
10x4 Vinyl fabric - cut to around 2x9
$5-10
6x 3/8" bolts:
1x - 3 3/4"
3x - 3 1/14"
2x - 1 3/4"
$10
10x hose clamps (to hold the main bar to the rack)
$5
Black rubber twisty ties
$7
Ubolts to hold the twisty ties
$5
Washers between everything.
The spacer I used on the left side, to drop the bar down, was just a short piece of metal tube I found in my dads shop. But I'm sure you can find something! Find a small tube or stacking up washers would work too
With out the fabric cover, it should be around $80. if you want the cover to, $10-20 depending on what you buy and where you buy it from. I used a vinyl fabric.

THE BEST DIY awning build! Thanks - Good Job!!! Out of all the YT vids I've searched, this design is perfect for my SUV. Love that it's sturdy in use, has built-in side rails, quick to set up and all-in-one storage for transport.

Great design and cheap! If people are worried about windy weather you can use a caravan awning storm strap. Goes over the top and is pegged into the ground. There are springs at the end of the strap to allow it to flex and stay secure.

Very slick, I love this idea. You could even fish those little velcro straps (that you use to hold the poles together when closed) through the holes in the tarp to get it even more taught if you wanted .
@TrailBendersOverland
@TrailBendersOverland 7 жыл бұрын
Good idea, I actually did try that, and with the velcro being mounted on the poles it would simply spin the velcro on the pole and wouldn't stay tight. I also tried that velcro a couple other ways and it wasn't strong enough to hold, would just need stronger velcro and a better way to mount it. But when I realized the bungees were easy and did a good job I just gave up on the velcro idea lol.

Thanks! I spend time with a German couple, season 1 episode 7, in joshua tree. Their arb awning was the first one I ever used or saw in person. next version improvement. -sloping roof. -extra cross poles lengthways for holding up tarp and stop it from collecting rain. -eye bolts halve way the posts for attaching bungies. -longer bolts at the end to connect last cross brace and attach guyline.
@TrailBendersOverland
@TrailBendersOverland 4 жыл бұрын
The current design does slope. Just lower the legs. And for rain if you lower one legs it all runs off. Eyelets for the bungees are a good idea though! To keep the bungees out of the dirt. Guylines wrap comfortably around the top of each leg current. I did my best with the design to keep it minimal, but functional. The eyelets for bungees are a good idea though.

Pretty cool ,but looks like it might be a bit of a chore to roll it back up and with the poles? Also, did you not want a tent? I have a commercial grade 10 x 10 pop up tent with awning and side that go on, bought it years ago for $200; its got the cage in the middle, not just around the edges for great support. Now days you can get a decent one from $50-100 bucks and they come with bags and you could throw it on your roof rack and strap it down. Then you have a great full tent with or without sides. Just a thought for you if it didnt come to your mind. Thanks for the video as im looking to see anything for a tent coming off the back of my toyota sienna van that in expensive. I may try to use my tent I just mentioned with two walls up and see if I can back the van up and open the back door (up) to have seclusion. Im thinking for more room when camping and maybe private shower and such. Mine is pretty heavy, maybe 50-75 lbs, so have to check my roof rack weight limits; its because the steel is commercial grade and the center cage is huge. Pops up in like 3 minutes and is awesome. Hope I gave you and others some ideas as you gave me. Thanks Chris

I used to use a Coleman ground tent, and loved it. It took 1 minute to setup and was $100. But since switching to roof tents I’ve never looked back! Totally worth the cost in my opinion.

One improvement would be to have some sort of flexible plastic pipe, slightly longer than width between the tarp horizontal side poles, so that when in position about mid way along, it bows slightly upward to raise the tarp and make rain run off easier. Maybe some pex type water pipe or similar.
@TrailBendersOverland
@TrailBendersOverland 6 жыл бұрын
You leave great comments. Thank you! It wouldn't take much to add a couple bolts and stick a pvc on it. The potential for issue I see is the mid-way bolts ability to puncture the tarp once everything is rolled up. One of my goals for it was to keep bolts away from the tarp. There might be a way to help hide them away. An interesting thought for sure!

Tatiana Summer Happy to share! It’s been over two years and this same awning is still good as new! Some people can, but at the time I just couldn’t justify spending $600 on an awning. So I came up with this and had to share. That’s what started the channel. Did you get a chance to check out the instructional build video?

I think putting this on the back of the vehicle would be pretty sweet if you want to be able to have the awning open while laying in the back.
@TrailBendersOverland
@TrailBendersOverland 6 жыл бұрын
The only problem with that, on 4Runner and like vehicles, is the lift gate is in the way of anything coming off the back. You would need some sort of riser to clear the hatch when it opens. also, the awning couldn't be any wider than the hatch, otherwise you'd be driving around with pegs coming out the sides. Soooo I usually just resort to using the hatch itself as the awning lol what you could do is put the awning on a swing arm that could swing it from the side to the back. that would be cool. But I'm more likely to just open the hatch and add more tarp material to connect the awing and the hatch together. Maybe use magnets for that. Idk. Something to think about though!

After watching all the make my own DIY Awning videos, I finally realize it is easier to just carrying along a portable Gazebo ( tent ) :D just get it off the roof and open it up :D it does not need to be attached to the vehicle. I can drive off in an emergency :D this attached vehicle awning thing is not practical for me, at least for the real purpose for a shade.

To each their own! I wanted it attached so I could add a roof top tent and save storage in the vehicle.
