@@utahman3953 Yeah, like 4" x 1". He framed another wall up the middle, that should help. But I've set sooooo many of those same stairs. I hope everything on the second floor is light weight. Bit of dice roll though. Oh, and I'm pretty sure that's a code violation at this point. I'm rooting for them though 🙏😁🙏

I think basic DIY, electrical safety, should be teach in high school, with the use of mechanical tools for carpentry… as well as basic computing ( excel, web creation/design), basic cooking, basic tax return, basic job interview/negotiation skills…), meditation/ self care, basic car maintenance, how to create a budget/avoid debts, basic investment skills, how to project yourself/take risks, how to navigate medical healthcare/insurance…

I'd generally agree, car maintenance like oil change and replacing breaks. Although a lot of it is easy to learn online if you're willing to watch a half hour videos. But I think this sort of project shouldn't be encouraged for someone who doesn't really know what they're doing. Most people watching this likely have some intermediate-advanced project experience but I could easily see someone buying a house for the first time, cutting the supports and not replacing them with something structurally solid enough to hold everything. I'm kinda glad most people leave structural/plumbing/electrical work to professionals, because it's super easy for an amateur to kill themselves or cause expensive damage to their property.

@JM-iz3fr
@JM-iz3fr 2 жыл бұрын
Some of those you mentioned used to be taught in schools - shop class for boys, home economics for girls. automotive, electricity, carpentry, etc were taught in high school. But that's when kids had an interest, it was not looked down on. Anyway, it's tough to offer many of those with the safety costs as well as interest. Boy scouts do offer some of those basics! Too much safety involved to afford

In most cities, for any changes to the structure, plumbing, or electrical, you need a permit, and pass inspections before the municipality can sign off of it. The wires that you ran in the metal junction box needs to have cable clamp connectors on them. Otherwise as the wires move, the insulation on them will wear down and could potentially lead to a short and the bare wire being exposed. Also it would be advisable to use plywood or drywall to keep the existing insulation in place because it will probably fall out over time.

Definitely wouldn't pass inspection. Looks nice, but isn't structurally sound. There's a reason contractors are licensed. I've spent my career fixing all the DIY projects since the big box stores opened. Here we were worried about losing work and all along homeowners are creating bigger jobs than we usually would get before the box stores. 📦

@@gklaus134 Not just a dumb idea but not to code. You can't hide a junction box inside a wall. Something like that is a major hazard along with the unprotected wires going into the box. (to the video creator): If you aren't afraid of doing electrical, that's fine. But at least be willing to learn how to do it safely/properly. Some idiot is going to see this and think this is the way it's done.

A good electrician never hides a junction box in the wall. You should always add a junction box as if you were adding a receptacle. Just use a blank cover. That way years down the road an electrician won't have a nightmare trying to find an electrical issue that could be hidden in the wall. You won't always own that house.

Agreed. He also did not add proper strain relief / cable clamps to the box, allowing possible sharp edges to nick the cables. An arching issue just waiting to happen. Also... I'm not so sure that moving the stair support from the edge to the center is structurally a good idea and he should have consulted a building inspector. Those 2x4s along the edge are possibly load bearing.

@@xxx-il9dv In this case, he said it was an outdoor outlet that he was connecting to, so there should be access from the outlet box outside. Probably would have been easier to connect outside though instead of working in the back of a box like that.

@@scottshinbaum1772 yeah but that makes no difference as the two boxes are inside and underneath the stairs and inaccessible. Very bad idea, and the wires aren't even secured into the box. Fire hazard waiting

This is Lovely, Fine attention to detail. One minor thing I'd do differently. I would have put the light switch higher and toward the front(same wall). Recessed it, or just added a matching decorative plate.

Awesome job man, try putting a mirror or a poster or painting on that wall on the left… you can get something cool also, maybe cnc cut some personal message related to your family and just glue it there… maybe over a small mirror… what you did is awesome!

Great video, handy work was spectacular and the team effort was great. Would have loved more commentary though. Also, wondering why you went with gray and not white/walnut to match the house - I’m still on the fence about the wall paper too - your wife will kill me lol. Great job guys!!

Your project was absolutely beautiful. We bought a small wine fridge and contacted a cabinet maker and we told him we wanted a built in for the fridge and a small cabinet on the side and he told my husband to cut the opening for the fridge, he showed up looked at the opening and said he’ll be back next day but canceled so we made another appointment and he never came. Since then we’ve had two other cabinet makers one wanted $2750 for both & the other $1700 but only for the small cabinet. We saw your video & we were inspire but not sure if we will do it, we will try to get another cabinet maker if not we will do it ourselves. A lot of them say the job is too small and everything is going up. Thank you for doing this video.

There was no header beam put in place because he's am amateur diy ... How about having two large men move a heavy dresser to the upstairs bedroom now.... This is why the average age of a carpenter is 55+.....no real men left

This was interesting to see the before and after but I didn't see you increase the support for the stairs which you should have done since you removed a point of support. Also I hope you got a permit to do this otherwise if you go to sell your home in the future you will have to put it back before you changed it.
