This video is a follow up to my previous one on DIY Vacuum Clamps. In this video I have tried to capture a different approach when it comes to making these the second time around. I have demonstrated another method purely done in my workshop without any CNC machine to achieve the much needed groove in these suction pads to accommodate the round rubber seals used. These suction clamps/pads that I have made work well with the use of a small suction pump bought online together with a foot pedal which diverts the air when you need to release your material from the suction pad. They are made from lightweight PVC board (dense plastic board) which is easy to work with.

Awesome video. Thanks for sharing the setup. Just ordered my parts to make 2 or 3 of these. Already have my pump from the mini split install earlier this year.

These vacuum clamps are great, could this system work to hold corrugated cardboard on a workbench given the uneven surface?
@geoffsjoinery4990
@geoffsjoinery4990 2 ай бұрын
No I don’t think so, the surface needs to be flat and also the air would pull through the cardboard

That's brilliant my bro. I'm suitably impressed with ur workmanship as well as these clamping systems ur making. What is this white board ur using? Is that some coloured MDF? I cannot find anything like tis in IRELAND. I've seen blue and Black MDF but it's very hard to get it. Is the rubber u used a rubber tube? What size is best if u can tell us please? I really like this idea. I'm sick to death of opening clamps up all te time to move things. This is a great idea for a small sop like mine. Even one of these would be awesome. I'm still stumped by that white board u ut the dovetails in the bottom of. It's new to me but then I don't make cabinets for a living. Keep up the great content man. I only found ur channel tonight bcos I watched another video about the router lift. I found ur channel with that same router lift video. I wonder are u still using it bcos that bit for the dovetails was a 1/2" shaft dovetail but, wasn't it??

Hi again Bud, the board I used as mentioned in the video is a PVC board, in other words it's made from plastic. We use it in Australia for outdoor cabinets as the moisture won't rot the board and it's very light and easy to work with especially when using the router. The rubber is solid tube, you can get all the parts from Amazon, just click on my description page attached to the video. I have listed all of the parts with links for you to buy. The dovetail cutter I used is from the Matchfit clamp set and yes, it is a 1/2" bit so I use it on my Triton router. great vid! whats your depth of cut with that 5mm bit for your channel?
@geoffsjoinery4990
@geoffsjoinery4990 Күн бұрын
@@seanmichael5751 the depth of cut depends on the rubber diameter you use for example if you are using 6mm, then router down around 4mm. You just want the rubber to stick up enough for your material to sit on then under vacuum it will squash down enough you have a decent seal. Hope this helps 👍

Great video, I'm in the middle of making some to go with my Gast oilless pump I had for the lathe. The last thing is to buy the PVC expanded foam sheets. What's the longest size plate you found useful? Should I buy wider than a 12" piece or should I go up to 24"? It seems like your pieces are about 12-18" in length ?
@geoffsjoinery4990
@geoffsjoinery4990 Жыл бұрын
Hi there, Yes mine are around 12” in length. I have not needed longer yet but if I happen to need to accommodate for something longer then I can hook up 2 clamps

I did exactly as your video, thank you! One thing tho, my pump has allot of oil mist. Any solutions other than a filter?

I wonder if the vacuum cares at all if the tunnel goes to the center of the piece or not? my drill press is a hunk of junk, it'll be hard for me to match up holes at 5 or 6 inches.
@geoffsjoinery4990
@geoffsjoinery4990 Жыл бұрын
Yes you don't have to drill right to the center you could just keep it off center to suit the range of your drill press or drill bit. I actually have another suction pad made with the fitting in the center, it has a fitting and goes out through the bottom, but it doesn't go through the board then a 90deg fitting which takes the pipe out to the side, You could make it that way and make some mods... Good luck

Instead of using the clamps to hold the vacuum pad to the workbench....what if you made a double sided vacuum pad, with a hole and a gasket on each side, whereby your vacuum pump sucks the pad down to the workbench, as well as sucks the workpiece to the pad?
@geoffsjoinery4990
@geoffsjoinery4990 11 ай бұрын
Yes of course you could do that, I chose not to because of the crappy chipboard cover sheet that sits on top of my bench with lots of saw cuts through it. You want to make sure you have a nice smooth and solid surface for that method you mentioned.

What brand of vacuum pump did you get? Are you happy with it? Is there oil-less versions?

Happy with the pump I use, it does the job and was cheap enough. Here is a link to a pump like mine (just different colour) bought from Amazon: amzn.to/3DDT99d I wouldn't trust any oil-less models. Hope this helps 😀
