This is how I designed and built a Vortex Separator aka Hydrocyclone for my parts washer.

I used 3/8 pipe for the central top pickup, but I would not use it again. I would use a 1/4 size or 1/2 size throughout for all the input/output adapters, just to reduce the different sizes used as well as try and get cleaner fluid from the pickup in the middle.
