I would recommend purchasing a bottle of Res Care Resin Cleaner and a pack of Sani-System Water Softener Sanitizer. You can pour both down the brine well and the regenerate the water softener. This could bring back the resin to life and also sanitize water softener.

I have a Culligan system that has been unused for about 3 years now as we moved into a new home. The whole system is 9 years old. It has been on bypass mode now for years. I cleaned out the brine tank but have not used a resin cleaner or sanitizer yet. I'm wondering if I need to change out the resin at this point or if the cleanser you used would be good enough. How often does resin need to be changed out?
@HouseDoctorRay
@HouseDoctorRay 4 жыл бұрын
No specific time that it lasts. Try a few bags of salt and the cleanser and iron out. Force it to regenerate a few times letting the water rest in the brine tank for at least 3 hours in between. Then see if the water is 'soft'. You'll be able to feel the difference.

So I’m assuming since that you used your garden hose to clean tank that the water throughout the distribution system still works despite the water softening system being disassembled? Thanks for the video by the way. I’m seeing what looks like rust in my toilet and got me wondering.
@HouseDoctorRay
@HouseDoctorRay 3 жыл бұрын
All softener systems have a mechanical bypass so you have water if the unit fails. Rust could be iron in your water or mineral sediment. Vinegar should clean it easily if you fill it overnight. Find a water testing company that doesn't sell systems. Check with your county or nearby university.

Great video. Due to a home purchase, I'm a fairly new owner of a two-resin-tank Culligan system. Every other year, they show up and 'swap' my 54" HE Tank for a so-called refreshed tank, itemized on their bill as an "AI PURGE". I'm wondering, are they simply doing a cleaning process similar to your video back at their facility, then swapping in their clean tank for my 'dirty' one? If so, I believe your method could save me a chunk of change.

I used dish soap and white vinegar. For my brine tank it takes about 10 forty pound bags to fill it up. I fill it all the way up so I don't have to fill it as often. If Culligan didn't want that much in there they would have made the tank smaller.

Did you put the water softener cleaner into an empty salt tank? Or was there other materials in it? Ours is empty and hasn't been used for years and want to try this but unsure if I need salt in the tank first?
@HouseDoctorRay
@HouseDoctorRay 2 жыл бұрын
The system needs to be working. Open the bypass valve and force the softener to do a regeneration. When it is finished you should end up with water in the salt tank. If that works put the cleaner in the salt tank and do another regeneration. After that is all done you can add some salt. You should force a regeneration once a day for a few days to purge the softener of any build up when you first start to re use it.

I am not sure how my system is but it is not working properly. It supposed to use the course solar salt but the last time it got filled they put in the pellets and it taking forever for it to get used up and doesn't seem to work at all. The water is hard and it has an oder. What should I do? I am thinking about dumping it out but it is half full of salt?
@HouseDoctorRay
@HouseDoctorRay 3 жыл бұрын
First thing to check is if the brine tank has water in it. Then when it goes into regeneration the level of water should go down. You might also have a salt bridge where the salt sticks to itself and won't go down. You can scoop the salt out and put it into a clean container or trash bag if needed.

It is likely sediment in the pipes that was stirred up when the water was off. You could also have sediment in your mineral tank. A regeneration or two should clear it up.

@HouseDoctorRay
@HouseDoctorRay 3 жыл бұрын
You could have a 'salt clog' or bridge in the salt tank. This happens when the salt clumps together and won't fall down. Make sure it is loose, you may have to take some out to check. You don't use the mechanical bypass. Once you put the cleanser in the brine tank and force the unit into regeneration mode it is effectively in bypass. If you use the mechanical bypass the unit won't operate because it needs water pressure to syphon water from the brine tank.

I just noticed that our water softener stopped using salt, it's been a long time since I put new salt in it and it still has the salt that I put in it like six months ago. Then a couple weeks ago the water dispenser on the fridge stopped working, probably due to hard water being pumped through it. I dunno what to do!
@HouseDoctorRay
@HouseDoctorRay 5 ай бұрын
Look down the small tube in the salt (brine) tank and see if there is water in there. Then run a regeneration cycle on the softener. The water level should go down, very slowly. If it does you may have developed a 'salt bridge'. The wet salt can get stuck together and not fall down into the water. You need to carefully break it up. If there is no water or the level doesn't change then there is a problem with your mineral tank valve or the line running to the brine tank.
@CourtneyLee62
@CourtneyLee62 5 ай бұрын
@@HouseDoctorRay Thank you for replying so quickly! :) I did what you said, did a regen cycle, it sounded pretty bad, like it's struggling. I gave the salt a stir. I discovered that the valve above the water softener was closed. So I opened it and it sounds like it's flowing a little better. It's not like an obnoxious hissing noise like it was. I'm wondering if the guy we had look at the fridge turn that valve off? Cause one of the copper lines go off of it and that goes directly to the fridge, so I'm assuming he might have turned it off to work on it. Ever since the problem with the fridge came up, it's been freezing food too. If it's not one thing, it's 6 others.
@HouseDoctorRay
@HouseDoctorRay 5 ай бұрын
Since it's been a while since your softener regenerated properly you should do a regeneration daily for a week. It will take quite a while to get rid of the mineral buildup. You can't do it one after another because the brine tank needs a while to dissolve more salt. As far as your water dispenser you may want to see if a dummy filter is available. @@HouseDoctorRay oh okay thank you for the reply! So if I replace the resin and clean the bin once a year how long could one of these last me?

As long as the electric motor lasts. My Culligan is 20+ years old.

@@HouseDoctorRay oh okay that's great to hear! Last question, when it comes to these water softeners are the brine valve assemblies universal? Or do they have to be the exact same one that's being replaced?
@HouseDoctorRay

The size of the brine tank determines how much water is available for backwash. You could interchange them if you had a similar size. If you buy a new system you'll get a new brine tank with it.

The cleaner that gets dumped in the brine tank should take care of that.

If you're asking about the salt tank, yes, you can fill it to the top. There is a reason it is that big.

My Brine tank is currently not filling up with water. Could this be due to a clog in the tank?
@HouseDoctorRay
@HouseDoctorRay Жыл бұрын
No, it is either the head unit on the mineral tank or the lines and tube to the brine tank are clogged. First thing I would check is the tube going to the brine tank. There is a float switch to set the water level; it may be stuck.

@@HouseDoctorRay Thank you. The line seems to be OK since I can blow into it, and here it bubbling and the bottom of the tank. The control valve on the float switch?
@HouseDoctorRay
@HouseDoctorRay Жыл бұрын
If you can blow through the line into the brine tank then the head unit on the mineral tank isn't sending water to the brine tank. If it's a Culligan here is how I took mine apart and cleaned it. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/p5-fgKpnz8qVhXU.html

If you mean that your salt bin has a drain on it I wouldn't try and remove it. Just clean bin out really well then rinse it out with a hose.

The small plastic hose running from the salt bin should have but at the end. You should be able to easily loosen that and pull the hose out.

Personally I would have run the Whirlpool cleaner through the mineral tank after the brine tank was cleaned because all that nasty stuff went through the mineral tank.

It would have been useful for the presenter to give us some details on the manufacturer directions of the resin cleaner including the brand name and what it is composed of. The second recommendation would be for the presenter to correctly refer to the tall cylindrical tank as the resin tank. I have no idea why you are referring to it as a mineral tank. My understanding of what the resin tank does is capture calcium and magnesium ions, then when the resin tank is regenerated through the use of brine, the calcium magnesium are flushed out of the resin beads. Hard metal such as iron remain on the resin beads and the liquid resin bead cleaner which you poured in the empty Rhine tank remove the iron from the beads. At least that's my understanding of what's taking place. The other recommendation I would make for the presenter is to clean the exterior of both the prime tank and the resin tank for sanitary reasons. Also, I don't believe you mentioned what the incoming big blue housing contained and why. Is it a carbon block filter to remove chlorine? Is it a sediment filter to remove fine sediment? Anyway I hope you use these comments to help improve your presentation if you do another one. Take care.
