Absolutely love the DIY rack you guys made. I use mine All the time. Once I added a few modifications I fell in Love with it and just don't feel the need for an exprensive power rack.

That is a downright dangerous design, it relies on the plywood alone for structural strength in the middle.

Cool design. I think the swivel post is a nice idea but ultimately takes away from the overall stability of the bench.

Never thought I'd see the day when steel was cheaper than lumber... But hey, it's been bad the last couple years! I ended up buying a power rack. However, concrete is cheaper than iron weight plates, so... Yeah, still lots of DIY to save money! Thanks for posting these projects, no matter the lumper/steel price differential. Who knows when things are going to change, again.

Get rid of the plywood and make a solid top out of some 2*6's or 2*8's. A strong flat bench is better than a sketchy adjustable bench. That's what I did at the start of lockdown, solid as a rock. DIY cable systems can be extremely economical.
@deltalima6703
@deltalima6703 Жыл бұрын
My DIY cable system was $140 for materials and I use it with 150lb weight, but it will take a lot more. I used a 15' rope with a monkeys fist on each end, making it 18" or so long, as a tricep Y handle like the thick rope with two plastic ends that you see everywhere. Weights were free as it fits my normal weights that I have anyways.
@deltalima6703
@deltalima6703 Жыл бұрын
You are correct, a strong flat bench beats a sketchy adjustable. Stability is key when the weights are huge and failure is disaster.. his base is big enough as long as it can take the large moment the center post (and plywood attachment) will be subjected to. Depends largely on how big and strong the user is I guess.

Yeah, I'm just buying the bench. I don't mind Garage Gym DIY, but can you do a GGR over a Rogue nordic curl bench vs a Titan floor GHR? I think that would make for an Awesome video. I'm looking to get one of those two. Thanks

I'm a mechanical engineer and that bench is a big mistake. You need a one good beam trough the midle. That gap is going to kill someone. And legs you make with 2 beams. And you also lock the leg only in one direction, you should lock it in both directions, like Rogue locks their fold rack beam with the pin. Also Torsional stress is a Problemm. My English is not good.
@handyhistorian
@handyhistorian Жыл бұрын
Comments starting with "I am an expert" are easy to dismiss. You might have a point, but it's lost in hysteria, no one is going to get killed using this bench. I wouldn't use it for Strongman bench-presses, but it's a serviceable design for home use and probably safer than the bargain basement crap you can buy on Amazon. The end user who is building the bench will the be the ultimate judge of their use case and the serviceability of their construction.

I am an engineer too. Using 1x1 and 1x6 in an intelligent way, my bench is extremely light and holds well over 1,000 lbs. An attachment using 2x4s adds decline and incline capability. I also have 2 trade tickets, so the tools are free, and materials were ~$60.
@phungphan2245
@phungphan2245 3 ай бұрын
Yeah, I'm not an engineer but using basic physics and referencing the strength of plywood says that focal point of weakness can handle up to 50 lbs of shear stress before structural failure for a 3/4 in thickness....I know some my rebuttal that he laid on it with dumbbells and nothing happened but that's because it's spread through the bench and not at that point. So I would heed the engineer's warning. This can kill someone if they decided to bench heavy.

Or visiting different types of athlete’s gyms? Asking as a washed up athlete looking to chase the next set of goals.

I'm sorry to sound like a downer, but someone is going to ge seriously hurt using that!!!! That bench needs a full-piece rail of some sort running down the length of that pad and those need a brace or gusset of some kind to take on any kind of torsional stresses. I say this because I like this channel alot- but I would strongly consider removing this video.

I would’ve at the very least doubled up the plywood on top, if not run some 2x4’s along the edges. It’s just too sketchy in the center, now it can’t be used for strep ups, and I wouldn’t feel comfortable doing bent over rows. Other than that though, it’s a neat idea

If you're benching under 250lb, this bench should be ok. It would be appropriate for me. Yes, it could be reinforced and gussied up, if you wish to extend the weight capacity. The vinyl seems to need more stretching, or might quickly wrinkle. I doubt that with 250 lb the plywood top will snap in half. Plywood is much stronger than that.

Horrible design. That bench will flex and/or snap in the middle with no support. GGR must be running out of stuff to “review” if they’re putting content like this out. You’d think after years of “reviewing” gym equipment, they’d know what a good bench looks like.
